Raised in a non-religious home, Nelson read the Mormon scriptures at a young age and was convinced. So convinced that he went home and smashed his parents liquor supply.
Since then, divine omens have played an important role in his life, Nelson says. A former heart surgeon who conducted Utahs first open-heart operation, the Mormon president said he has prayed for the Holy Ghosts help while wielding a scalpel over a patients body.
Revelations have seeded Nelsons love life as well. After his first wife died in 2005, Nelson proposed to the former Wendy Watson. To strengthen my proposal to Wendy, I said to her, I know about revelation and how to receive it, the Mormon president has said. Wendy Nelson said she, too, had received a revelation about their relationship.
During his time as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, one of the churchs top echelons of leadership, Nelson said that he prayed for revelations daily. In 2016, before he became president, he defended the churchs then-new policy of calling LGBT couples apostates and effectively barring their children from baptism.
When liberal Mormons criticized the policy, Nelson called it the will of the Lord as expressed to former president Thomas Monson.
Some Mormons say Nelson was trying to shore up a man-made decision by calling it a revelation, but the criticism seems not to have slowed his revelation roll.

One thing thats been impressed on our minds over the past year is, how can we strengthen children spiritually? said Sister Susan H. Porter. When we talk about strengthening the faith of the rising generation, that has to start in Primary.

Sister Porter sees the blessings that come to baptized children as they participate as covenant members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Because its often in doing and serving that our testimonies are increased. Children can learn to seek inspiration from heaven, she said.
Before her call to be the Primary general president, Sister Porter was serving as first counselor in the Primary general presidency for a year.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sister Porter said many children could not participate in Primary. She also saw the challenges that single women faced. Her husband, Elder Bruce D. Porter, General Authority Seventy, passed away in 2016.
There were many Sundays where I did not have the sacrament, she said.
She said women have connected with her as she has shared her experiences, telling her for example, The fact that you are serving in the Church gives me a better vision that the Church needs me too, she said.

How The Modern Prophet Is Chosen
Modern prophets have come from a variety of secular backgrounds and experiences. There is no designated path to the presidency, secular or otherwise.
The process for designating a founding prophet for each dispensation is done miraculously. After these initial prophets die or are translated, a new prophet follows through an official line of succession.
For example, Joseph Smith was the first prophet of this last dispensation, often called the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times.
Until the second coming of Jesus Christ and the Millennium arrive, the most senior apostle in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will become the prophet when the living prophet dies. As the most senior apostle, Brigham Young followed Joseph Smith.

President Camille N Johnson Relief Society General President
President Camille N. Johnson said shes always felt at home in Relief Society.
I found sisterhood among women who were different than me, President Johnson said of her experiences in Relief Society, including 30-plus years in a family ward and in Peru. I love the vitality and wisdom of the women in Relief Society, she said.
President Camille N. Johnson will begin service as Relief Society general president on Aug. 1, 2022.
President Johnson was sustained as the Relief Society general president and will begin on Aug. 1. She has been serving as the Primary general president for the past year.
She found mentors and friends in Relief Society, including those who were older and younger than her.
We are all sisters with a shared experience in our desire to return to our heavenly home, but with diverse experiences that we can draw upon to help one another, President Johnson said.
One of her favorite callings has been to teach in Relief Society.
I loved the opportunity to engage the sisters and to be taught by the Spirit and each other during that sacred hour in Relief Society. It is there that we talk of Christ and rejoice in Christ and address matters of the heart, President Johnson said.

First Presidency Celebrates Life And Mission Of Jesus Christ With 2022 Easter Message

SALT LAKE CITY The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released its 2022 Easter message Wednesday celebrating the Atonement and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
President Russell M. Nelson and his counselors, President Dallin H. Oaks and President Henry B. Eyring, issued the following Easter message from the church’s headquarters in Salt Lake City:
“‘He is risen’ was the angelic message of the first Easter. With feelings of worship and gratitude, we declare our witness that Jesus Christ is indeed risen.
“God the Father has given us the divine birth, the incomparable life, and the infinite atoning sacrifice of His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
“By the power of the Father, Jesus rose again and claimed the victory over death. He is our resurrected Savior, our Exemplar, and our Redeemer. He is the light, the life, and the hope of the world. His way is the path that leads to happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come.
“May the glorious significance of Easter attract all to follow Jesus Christ and to love one another as He taught in word and deed.”
The First Presidency’s Easter message comes less than two weeks after President Nelson specifically invited everyone to seek to end a personal conflict by Easter on April 17.
The church has also launched a weeklong, Christ-focused social media initiative titled #BecauseofHim.

After spending her childhood in different places across the United States, Sister J. Anette Dennis thought her dreams had come true when her family moved to Cottonwood Heights, Utah. I thought everybody in Utah were members of the Church and it was going to be a haven here, she said.
Sister J. Anette Dennis will begin service as first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency on Aug. 1, 2022.
During her first few days in ninth grade, she was excited to be invited to a party. But then a girl who became her best friend, warned her that this wasnt the kind of party she wanted to go to and the people there would be using drugs.
This realization devastated her. I learned very quickly that the world is everywhere.
Fortunately, her testimony and a gospel-centered home kept her strong throughout school.
Born in Provo, Utah, on June 27, 1960, Jeannie Anette Herrin, 61, was the oldest of Curtis Lamar and Patricia Joanne Herrins seven children. Due to her fathers career, the family lived in Mississippi, Tennessee, Iowa, Nebraska and Utah.

Restorationism And Prophetic Leadership
The LDS Church teaches that, subsequent to the death of Jesus and his original apostles, his church, along with the authority to act in Jesus Christ’s name and the church’s attendant spiritual gifts, were lost, due to a combination of external persecutions and internal heresies. The LDS Churchs First Presidency of today is the oldest threesome in the faiths nearly 200-year history.
According to statistician Christian Anderson, the male trio governing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has gotten older and older as the religion moved from its beginnings in 1830 to its just-completed 188th Semiannual General Conference.
Founder Joseph Smith was 26.3 years old in March 1832, when he organized the fledgling faiths original First Presidency with himself as president and Jesse Gause and Sidney Rigdon as the two counselors.
The average age of that initial presidency was 37.4, Anderson notes.
When Gause was excommunicated, the average age dropped to 33.4 years, the researcher says, but it rebounded to 37.5 with the calling of Frederick G. Williams as a replacement.
The first major jump upward occurred when Brigham Young succeeded Smith, who died in 1844. Young moved his band of believers across the country to the West and, in late 1847, reorganized the First Presidency with counselors Heber C. Kimball and Willard Richards . The average age then became 45.5.

First Presidency Issues Statement Regarding The Russian
SALT LAKE CITY The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued the following statement Friday regarding the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
We are heartbroken and deeply concerned by the armed conflict now raging. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has members in each of the affected areas and throughout the world. Our minds and hearts have been turned toward them and all our brothers and sisters, the statement read.
We continue to pray for peace. We know that enduring peace can be found through Jesus Christ. He can calm and comfort our souls even in the midst of terrible conflicts. He taught us to love God and our neighbors, the First Presidency statement continued.

He Is The Church President And A Prophet
One man holds the title of both President of the Church and a living prophet. These are dual responsibilities.
As President, he is the legal head of the Church and the only one with the power and authority to direct all its operations here on earth. He is assisted by many other leaders in this responsibility but he has final say on everything.
Sometimes this is described as holding all the keys of the kingdom or the keys of the priesthood. It means all priesthood authority to others on this earth flows through him.
As the prophet, he is Heavenly Father‘s mouthpiece on earth. Heavenly Father speaks through him. No one else can speak on His behalf. He has been designated by Heavenly Father to receive inspiration and revelation at this time for the earth and all its inhabitants.
He has the responsibility to convey Heavenly Father’s messages and guidance to the members of the Church. All prophets have done this.

Cosmology And Plan Of Salvation
The Mormon cosmology and plan of salvation include the doctrines of a pre-mortal life, an earthly mortal existence, three degrees of heaven, and exaltation.
According to these doctrines, every human spirit is a spiritual child of a Heavenly Father, and each has the potential to continue to learn, grow, and progress in the eternities, eventually achieving eternal life, which is to become one with God in the same way that Jesus Christ is one with the Father, thus allowing the children of God to become divine beings – that is, gods – themselves. This view on the doctrine of theosis is also referred to as becoming a “joint-heir with Christ”. The process by which this is accomplished is called exaltation, a doctrine which includes the reunification of the mortal family after the resurrection and the ability to have spirit children in the afterlife and inherit a portion of God’s kingdom. To obtain this state of godhood, the church teaches that one must have faith in Jesus Christ, repent of his or her sins, strive to keep the commandments faithfully, and participate in a sequence of ceremonial covenants called ordinances, which include baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, the endowment, and celestial marriage.
Establishing Doctrine Infallibility And Opinion
When the church president is speaking in his official capacity, his words are not considered “infallible”. Members of the church are considered not fully justified in their actions if they “blindly” follow the president. The church has counseled its members that they should reject statements that contradict what is found in church scriptures “regardless of the position of the man who says it”. Instructions given or positions taken by the president of the church can be changed by a future president of the church because of the Latter-day Saint belief in “continuing revelation“. It is accepted that a church president will occasionally revise or clarify instructions of past church presidents. One apostle of the church counseled to “beware of those who would pit the dead prophets against the living prophets, for the living prophets always take precedence”.
Not everything said by the prophet is considered to be doctrine. Joseph Smith taught that “a prophet is a prophet only when he was acting as such”. When the church president declares new doctrine, “he will declare it as revelation from God, and it will be so accepted by the Council of the Twelve and sustained by the body of the Church”. If the doctrine is not accepted by the church as the word of God, members are not bound by it, even if it comes from the President of the Church.

Shortly following the Saturday afternoon session, President Jones and her counselors used social media to express their gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the Primary general presidency.
President Jones said she served with several amazing women. She voiced her support for the new Primary general presidency and will carry on heartfelt feelings for children worldwide.
What a wonderful journey the last five years have been! she wrote in a . Throughout my service, I have continually felt of the Lords deep and unending love for our children.

My heart is overflowing with gratitude, joy, and peace today, she wrote. I testify that our Lord and Savior is keenly aware of us. He has strengthened me over and over during my service. I know that your faith and mine can be strengthened when we remember that we are children of God and that He loves us.
