What Is Starbucks Matcha Latte

The best Iced Matcha Latte recipe | Green Tea latte | Better than Starbucks

Matcha is finely ground green tea, which is popular in Asia, especially in Japan. Matcha latte drink is made with green tea powder and milk, with sweeteners sometimes added to counter the slightly bitter flavor of the tea itself. Starbucks introduced the matcha lattes in its North American stores in 2005 as a limited-edited drink. Now you can find a few Starbucks matcha drinks, but the most popular one is definitely the Matcha latte!

This beverage can be served iced or hot and offers a caffeine boost to those that need it. Besides the outstanding taste, one of the most significant benefits of this drink is its simplicity.

Limited ingredients mean shorter prep time and mixing, which means you can enjoy your latte quicker and with far less hassle. That makes the drink ideal for anyone looking for a tasty drink without worrying about having to worry about following overly complicated steps.

Do I Have To Use Cashew Or Almond Milk

No, but as I mentioned above, almond milk is the best plant-based frothing milk. It has similar proteins to regular dairy and will froth nicely in the blender.

If you prefer a creamier drink, I definitely recommend cashew milk. And I find that it froths just fine in the blender! At least a high-speed blender.

If you dont need it to be dairy-free, then any milk you like will work. Again, if you like the froth, then using whole milk is better than skim milk.

Ingredients You Will Need

  • Hot water. This will help to dissolve the matcha powder and sweetener.
  • Honey or maple syrup. The amount of sweetener you use can be adjusted according to your preference.
  • Matcha powder. Use good quality matcha for this recipe for the best flavor results.
  • Vanilla extract. An easy way to add delicious vanilla flavor to your iced matcha latte.
  • Milk. Any dairy or non-dairy milk will work for this recipe.
  • Ice cubes. Keeps the drink chilled and refreshing!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Easy to make. You only need 4 simple ingredients to make a matcha latte: matcha powder, water, milk and sweetener.
  • You can adjust the level of sweetness. What I love about making a matcha latte at home is that I can control the level of sweetness. This recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of simple syrup to closely replicate the matcha lattes at Starbucks , but you can adjust the sweetener to taste.
  • Less caffeine than coffee. One teaspoon of matcha powder has about half the caffeine of a cup of coffee. Perfect way to start your morning or as an afternoon pick-me-up without the hard crash.

  • Pulse until completely mixed together and frothy.

Is Matcha Latte Good For Weight Loss

While there have been studies done on matcha tea promoting weight loss through the benefits of antioxidants, its still important to note that lattes also have a certain amount of fat and sugar depending on how you like your drink. If want extra flavor, mix your matcha latte with a little pomegranate juice for more antioxidants.

    Hot Matcha Tea Latte Recipe

As with the iced variety, a hot matcha latte recipe will require various ingredients and tools on hand. At Starbucks, baristas simply add sweetened matcha powder into the milk pitcher and then steam it using the steam wand of your espresso machine. You can do so if you have an espresso machine at home. However, if you dont, using simple kitchen tools can also make this.

    Equipment:

    • Milk frother or handheld whisk

    Ingredients:

    • 1 cup of hot milk
    • 2 tablespoons of simple syrup or any syrup you like
    • Brown sugar or date syrup for added sweetness

    Instructions:

  • Dissolve the matcha powder with a small amount of hot water or milk . You can use a mug or a container of any size that can withstand heat. It is best to use a milk frother or steam wand to break down the clump of matcha powder while also making the frothy texture.
  • Add your favorite syrup to the mixture. The vanilla, caramel, and maple syrups pair well with the matcha latte.
  • Steam or heat your milk. Once thats done, simply pour the milk over the matcha mixture.
  • After you have stirred it all thoroughly, all thats left to do is sit back and enjoy!
  • Optional steps: If you have an espresso machine, you can treat the dissolved matcha mixture as a shot of espresso, then froth milk and pour latte art. The basic pouring technique is the same as you make other espresso-based drinks.

Copycat Starbucks Iced Green Tea Latte

Green tea lattes are my go-to drink to get at Starbucks, I love how they arent overly sweet and the flavor is just so awesome! Recently, I finally started making green tea lattes at home after I finally got a package of matcha powder and I have finally perfected the recipe! I think this recipe is as good or even better than Starbucks!

All you need is 2-3 minutes to make the recipe start to finish before you can be sipping an iced matcha latte. Easy enough, right? The only thing you might not already have sitting around in the kitchen is matcha powder but that is easy to get off of Amazon. You can use it for everything from iced matcha lattes, warm matcha lattes, green tea frappuccinos, etc or you can even bake with it! The color may vary in shades of green depending on the matcha you get. Mine was on the browner side than others.

Version : How To Make Matcha Latte In A Milk Frother

How To Make a Starbucks Iced Green Tea Matcha Latte

If you have a milk frother, then making matcha latte has become even easier! I personally use a Dualit milk frother, which has the ability to make both hot and cold froth. I love this in particular, as it saves me having to heat the plant milk in advance.

If your frother does not heat the milk, then please heat the plant milk in the microwave or on the stovetop beforehand.

Simply combine the plant milk, matcha green tea powder, and vanilla syrup in the milk frother, then switch it on using the heating setting of your milk frother.

Allow it to run through the frothing process – this should only take a minute or 2 for most milk frothers.

    Latte Ingredients And Notes

Matcha Powder: When you buy matcha powder there are two types youll find. Ones that include added sugars and other ingredients, and ones that are purely matcha powder. Get the type that is pure matcha powder, no extra stuff! You can find it online, at Whole Foods, or in Asian markets.

Dairy-Free Milk: I used unsweetened almond milk for my recipe, but I also recommend oat milk, soy milk, or light coconut milk. Oat milk and soy milk will allow the flavor of the matcha to shine through. Whereas youll taste an undertone of coconut if you choose to go with coconut milk.

Maple Syrup: You can add more or less than one tablespoon of maple syrup in the recipe. However, I recommend starting with one, tasting, and adding more if you think it needs more sweetness.

Vanilla Extract: The vanilla extract gives a slight hint of vanilla flavor that youll find in the Starbucks version.

What If I Got Soy Milk Would That Help Nope

    • Soy Milk: A 16oz latte with soy milk is going to go above and beyond nonfat. Your 33g of sugar becomes 34g with this option.
    • Matcha: Still 14g or so of sugar.

The real takeaway here is that there is a ton of sugar in Starbucks’ version of the drink, and you can make it much healthier by using unsweetened alternatives and avoiding cow milk.

How Do You Make A Starbucks Green Tea Latte At Home

The Starbucks Green Tea Latte can be prepared at home with the following ingredients 3 cups of milk , 2 teaspoons of matcha powder, 3 teaspoons of honey, 1 tablespoon of vanilla syrup, 2 tablespoons of water and 1 cup of ice .

So, to prepare the Starbucks Green Tea Latte, first, mix the water and matcha powder in a small bowl and stir until you get a smooth, clump-free mixture. Then, place the matcha mixture, milk, honey and vanilla syrup in a cup and stir thoroughly with a spoon or a milk frother until well combined and enjoy. If you placed the mixture in a shaker or covered container, shake thoroughly for a few seconds until well mixed and enjoy your latte.

If you want an iced green tea latte, you will serve the well-mixed latte over ice and enjoy. You can prepare a vegan green tea latte by using non-dairy milk like almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk or soy milk. Whatever kind of milk you prefer can be used in this recipe.

The vanilla syrup and honey in this recipe are sweeteners and therefore if you do not want a sweetened green tea latte, you can take them out. 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract can be used in the place of vanilla syrup and maple syrup can also be used as a sweetener in this recipe.

    The Basic Starbucks Latte Recipe

The components of a hot latte are espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. Starbucks baristas use 2% low fat milk unless the customer requests something else.

When milk is steamed, it is aerated to create the rich, creamy texture that all latte drinkers know and love. The aerating process actually makes the milk a bit sweeter. Foam is a by-product of this process and it has a unique texture that people tend to either love or hate. The best way I can describe it is to say its aptly named. Its, well, foamy.

A Starbucks barista makes a latte by pouring shots of espresso directly into the cup. Then they pour in the steamed milk and finally top it off with a spoonful of foam. The espresso and the steamed milk completely mix together and the foam adorns the top.

An iced latte isnt terribly different. Simply put, cold milk substitutes for steamed milk and ice for foam. Shots of espresso are poured directly into the cup, cold milk is added, and the beverage is finished off with a scoop of ice. A plain iced latte might not be quite as creamy or sweet as a hot one, since the milk is not steamed. Baristas use 2% low fat milk unless another type is requested.

The lines on Starbucks iced drink cups help ensure consistent iced lattes. After the shots are poured, your barista adds milk up to the top line and then fills the rest of the cup with ice. If you ask for light ice, they will half the amount of ice and add more milk.
