Starbucks might say the words iced chai tea latte for this drink, but this is a no no. Why? The word chai translates to tea in Hindi, so saying chai tea is like saying tea tea. Just like the word curry, a Westernized reduction of a complex blend of Indian spices, the American concept of chai can appropriate a rich Indian cultural tradition.

In most instances, the best option is to whip up some homemade chai concentrate. The main benefit is that you can make as strong as you want, ensuring that the flavor of the ingredients really shine through. Furthermore, you have greater control over what spices are used in the concentrate.

You can choose to remove ingredients that are traditionally used or add ones that you don’t usually find. It is also possible for you to determine which flavors have the greatest impact or if they will all blend together.

A lot of chai concentrates can also be very high in sugar. If you are trying to cut back on sugar or have certain medical conditions, then making your own version will allow you to be healthier.

Make your own chai tea latte concentrate at home from tea bags! Cheaper than store bought concentrate with no extra ingredients. Simply mix with milk and pour over ice or keep it warm for a homemade chai tea latte!

My cousin initially introduced me to chai tea lattes in high school and my life was forever changed.

Seriously, I made it my mission in college to find the best chai tea latte in College Station.

To this day, one sip of it takes me back to her kitchen in Austin. Whenever I go visit I always know the fridge will be stocked with milk and chai tea latte concentrate to make our own chai tea lattes each morning.

With Texas heat nearing the 100s, most mornings Im having either homemade cold brew coffee or a chai tea latte. You can buy chai tea concentrate at the store or you can make your own from tea bags.

In a pinch I love Tazos chai tea latte concentrate, but I also know that it packs 16g/sugar per 1/2 cup serving. Yikes. You can either make this chai tea latte concentrate sugar free or use any your sweetener of choice!

Whats An Iced Chai Latte

EASY CHAI TEA LATTE RECIPE | How to make homemade chai tea lattes, no powder or mix needed!

A chai latte is a Western invention: it takes traditional masala chai, the milky spiced tea from India, and combines it with frothy steamed milk of a latte. The iced version serves it over ice, and skips the frothy topping. This drink was popularized by Starbucks in the 1990s. Many coffeehouse versions of a chai latte have little left of the traditional Indian inspiration: theyre often too sweet and overly spiced.

The recipe for our iced chai latte is gently spiced and subtly sweet. It combines our chai spices with milk and ice for a refreshingly cool latte thats just sweet enough.

Chai Tea Latte Calories

The calories in a chai tea latte depend on which type of milk you use and how sweet you like your drink.

For instance, a grande Starbucks chai tea latte made from whole milk has 270 calories .

One of the reasons I like to make mine at home is because you can vary the sweetness as well as which type of milk you use which directly affects the chai tea latte calories.

My recipe only has 79 calories and tastes just as delicious!

How To Make A Homemade Chai Tea Latte

Youve got your homemade chai tea latte concentrate, now its time to make your latte.

What I like about the Stash brand of chai tea bags is they have a good amount of the traditional spice. You can play around with the amount of concentrate to milk, but this is a good place to start:

  • 4 oz chai tea concentrate
  • 4 oz milk
  • 1/2-1 tsp sweetener of choice

For a stronger chai tea flavor, simply go heavier on the concentrate.

Youve brewed, spiced, and sweetened your tea, and now you must froth your milk unless youd rather have a classic cup of chai rather than a chai latte. The problem? You dont own an espresso machine or a frothing wand. Luckily there are three clever ways you can froth your milk for lattes.

Whisk it: You can vigorously whisk your milk while heating it on the stovetop, which weve written into the directions below. This method works best with 2% dairy milk and coconut milk.

Blend it: You can also froth the milk with an immersion blender before heating the milk in a saucepan on the stovetop. This method is best for non-dairy milks, like soy or almond milk, but also works with coconut milk, whole milk, or 2%.

Shake it: The other method is to shake the milk in a jar and then heat the milk post-frothing. This method works especially well with whole milk and nut milks.

How to make a CHAI TEA LATTE

Youll use a black tea concentrate in this recipe, but just in case you want to make it from scratch, here are the five spices that make-up chai.

    1. Green Cardamom. This floral-scented spice gives a smoky and earthy flavor to the tea. Green cardamom is a must-have for making chai. Do not skip this one out! Get whole pods instead of seeds for better flavor. Crack them before steeping the tea.

    2. Cloves. Unlike green cardamom, this one is optional. Its highly recommended, though! Its flavor blends really well with sweet cinnamon and spicy black pepper. Its also super fragrant.

    3. Cinnamon Stick. This ones another non-negotiable. Its sweetness counteracts the earthiness of the cardamom and the spiciness of the pepper.

    4. Fresh Ginger. Its mild spice is responsible for that soothing sensation you feel on the back of your throat as you drink the tea.

    5. Black Peppercorns. It may sound strange adding this to a drink, but its another must-have! It gives the drink that subtle kick of spice that makes it cozy and warm.

Chai tea is a black tea infused with wonderful spiced flavors like cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and black pepper. The addition of steamed milk makes it over the top delicious and a perfect beverage to cozy up with during cooler months. Today Im showing you how to save money and make your own awesome chai latte at home!

Use a chai blend tea for a time-saving shortcut!

Ive read about methods where you buy each spice individually and steep it with black tea. That seemed a little time intensive so I would suggest just buying a chai spice tea blend.

In fact, I asked a Starbucks barista how she would make a chai latte at home, and she suggested this Tazo brand chai tea as a nice substitute for a Starbucks latte! She advised me to use two tea bags to make it a stronger brew and to add frothed warm milk to the top to make it a latte. Then, just sweeten as desired. This process is super EASY! Plus, you can change it up and use any type of desired milk.
