What To Do With Those Stems

Herbs for Teas: Harvesting and Drying

If you dry herbs with the stems, chances are you have a lot of stems. You can throw them out, but you can also use them.

  • Burn the herb stems in a fireplace or wood stove in the winter for a fragrant touch.
  • Add them to your potpourri.
  • Weave them into fall wreaths to add fragrance.
  • Grind them and use that as a powdered form of the herb.

Are Herbal Teas Better For You Than Breakfast Tea

Being British, we know theres nothing a good cup of tea cant fix. But are herbal teas actually better for you than a good old English breakfast tea?

In general, all teas have a wide range of benefits and are a much healthier choice than sugar-packed fizzy drinks or coffee.

Black teas such as Earl Grey and English Breakfast do contain caffeine, although not as much as coffee. So if you are looking to cut down on this, it could be a good idea to swap to a herb tea instead.

Herbal teas offer a wide range of different benefits and taste great without milk or sugar – and so it could be time to switch.

Herbal teas have been used as natural remedies for all sorts of ailments for thousands of years due to the various vitamins some of them contain.

How To Tell The Quality Of Dried Herbs

Once youve made a purchase and your order arrives, youll need to check your dried herbs for freshness! In my experience, herbs ordered online are almost always of higher quality than herbs from a local shop. This is because the temptation to display herbs on a shelf in clear jars is too much for most shops. Its also true that the demand for dried herbs is not as high in a health food store, so they may sit on the shelf for a long time. .

As they age and are exposed to light, humidity, and oxygen, herbs degrade and lose their potency. Companies that specialize in herbs are more likely to store their herbs in a manner that preserves freshness for as long as possible. Curious about how to know fresh herbs from stale herbs? Heres more info on how to tell the quality of dried herbs.

There Is An Herbal Tea For Every Mood Or Ailment

A hot cup of tea is comforting on chilly evenings. And herbal teas are lovely iced when you want something refreshing instead of plain water but without the caffeine.

And while there are plenty of herbal teas available on the market, how wonderful would it be to brew up a mug of tea, you blended yourself from your backyard tea garden?

Growing an herbal tea garden is a great way to add color and beauty to your existing landscape. And even with only a handful of popular plants used in herbal teas, you can create some incredible tea blends.

How To Make Herbal Tea

Bring the water just to a boil, add anywhere from 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of dried herbs per cup of water to your teapot, and then let steep for 3-5 minutes, depending on how strong you like your tea. Since herb teas are naturally light in color, test by taste rather than by sight. Keep in mind that overbrewed tea can be bitter.

You can use a teaball to keep leaves from clogging the teapot’s spout or use an infuser to brew just a single cup. Many tea aficionados don’t like to use the metal strainers, claiming they give the tea a metallic taste and don’t allow the herbs to fully swell and release their flavors. I have a friend who uses her French press to make tea.

A dry summer helps to concentrate the flavors, making for some tasty teas. The chocolate mint was extremely strong and aromatic and the holy basil especially sweet and fruity this year. It grew so prolifically I couldn’t keep up! The bees appreciated the blossoms though and the bubblegum aroma wafted over the garden on hot days.

A combination of lemon balm, lemon verbena, and spearmint make a refreshing tea, served hot or cold.

Tired of tea made from a single herb? Try these delicious combinations or experiment and make up some of your own. If you like your tea sweet, add a dried stevia leaf to each cup.

Enjoy a reminder of the garden this winter over a cup of homegrown herb tea.

Choose Loose Herbs With This Formula:

  • Start with a dried herb as the base ingredient. These herbs will have a mellow flavour that will go with the most complementary and accent herbs. These are the herbs that have the main flavour or herbal action that you want. For instance, when making an herbal tea for relaxation you may use chamomile as your main herb.
  • Next, add a complementary ingredient for a different effect or flavour. For instance, peppermint is often added to chamomile to add to the relaxing effect and to stimulate the taste buds.
  • The last ingredient is an accent herb which gives you the ability to add intense flavour that will round out the other two ingredients. A berry or a little spice like cinnamon or fennel can be added to make the tea more interesting to your taste buds.

Start by combining 3 parts base ingredient, 1 to 2 parts complementary herb , and 1/4 to 1 part of accent herbs and spices. Use 1 to 3 teaspoons of this mixture for your tea. Always cover the cup or teapot to hold in the volatile oils. These oils are where most of the flavour comes from as well as the therapeutic benefits of herbal tea.

Youll want to start creating your original herb mixes in small batches so you can make adjustments as you are perfecting your recipes.

Here Is How To Dry Herbs You Have Grown In Your Garden

Harvesting in the warm months offers dried herb in the Winter when garden plants have gone dormant.

  • Harvest herbs by cutting stems to about 4- 12 inches in length. Do not harvest more than 50% of a plant. Harvest leaves like peppermint, oregano, or rosemary before the plant has flowered for a better taste. Harvest flowers like lavender or chamomile will the flowers are young and vibrant for optimal flavor.
  • Gently rinse, and then pat the cuttings dry with a paper towel or cloth.
  • Make small bundles by tying with string, allowing air flow around the herbs.
  • Dry in a warm, dry, well ventilated area. Hang the herbs upside down or put the bunch in a brown paper lunch bag, stems facing outward. Bagging prevents dust and debris from collecting on the drying herbs.
  • Once completely dried, remove leaves or flowers from stems, and place desired parts in a sealed container and store in cupboard, out of sunlight.

How To Brew Herbal Tea

  • Before making teas, be sure that the plants are edible and organically grown with no pesticides.
  • Gather leaves and flowers in the morning, after the dew has evaporated.
  • Spread in a single layer on paper towels or a drying screen.
  • Let dry for 10 days out of direct sunlight.
  • Crush leaves, seal in jars and label.
  • When its time to make tea, crush leaves into a tea ball and pour boiling water over it. Let steep for 10 minutes before serving.

Air Drying Herbs: A Low

The cheapest and easiest method for drying is using the air to dry your herbs. Gather the herbs into a bundle with the cut stems facing the same way and use twist ties, wire, string, or rubber bands to tie the stems together. If you live in a particularly dusty climate or have a wood stove, you’ll probably want to tie a paper or grocery bag loosely around the herbs and poke holes in them to allow ventilation. If you live in a relatively clean place with not a lot of dust, cheesecloth works well.

Hang the herbs on the wall in a warm place stems up. How long it will take to dry out depends on the temperature of your house and the humidity. The lower the humidity your air is, the more likely your herbs will dry quickly. Warm and dry is best. I discovered this quite by accident in the summer when I left some catnip on a table. A few weeks later when I found them, the catnip was dry enough to store.

Check on your herbs frequently. The herbs should have no pliability and should break easily in your hands when dry. Remove the paper bag and untie the bundle. Strip the leaves from the stems over a plate. Pour the dried herbs in an airtight container.

Preparing The Herbs For Herbal Tea

  • Heavier plant parts like roots, seeds, and coarse bark such as cinnamon sticks, star anise, and black pepper, are generally added to boiled water and simmered for 10-20 minutes.
  • Lighter plant parts such as leaves should be infused in water that is slightly less hot than boiling for 6-9 minutes.
  • Very delicate plant parts such as blossoms and flower petals should be steeped in hot water that wont burn your finger for 3-5 minutes.
