Both coffee and tea contain caffeine, a stimulant that can help increase mental alertness, decrease fatigue, and sometimes get the bowels moving, says Nathalie Rhone, RDN, a New York City-based nutritionist and founder of the private practice Nutrition by Nathalie.
“Caffeine increases blood flow to the kidneys and fluid output, or pee,” explains Rhone. “For this reason, it has been thought that caffeine can negatively impact hydration status.” However, research shows that moderate caffeine consumption does not appear to raise the risk of dehydration.

Getting enough water does more than simply quench your thirst. Coffee Could Have Similar Hydrating Qualities To Water
Researchers at the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Birmingham directly compared the effects of coffee consumption against that of water ingested across a range of hydration assessment techniques.
In the study 50 male coffee drinkers, who usually drank three to six cups per day, participated in two three-day trials.
In separate instances each participant consumed either four 200ml cups of coffee in a day or the same amount of water.
“Our data show that there were no significant differences across a wide range of haematological and urinary markers of hydration status between trials,” they said.
They deduced that this suggests that coffee, when consumed in moderation by regular male coffee drinkers, provides similar hydrating qualities to water.
It should be noted, however, that this was a small study. The UKs National Health Service previously published commentary on the limitations of the study, highlighting that its short period meant that no longer term effects could not be analysed.
It also said that as the participants were all healthy males, it may not apply to people suffering from diarrhoea, vomiting, or living with conditions like kidney disease, who are at risk of dehydration, among others.

Drinking four to six mugs of tea a day is as good for keeping you hydrated as a litre of water, reported the Daily Mail. It said the finding disproves the idea that regular tea drinking can dehydrate the body because of its caffeine content.
The newspaper report is of a trial of 21 volunteers, which compared hydration levels in people drinking four mugs of tea with their levels when drinking the same amount of water on two different days. The study, sponsored by the UK Tea Advisory Panel, which in turn is sponsored by the UK tea industry, found no difference in hydration levels when tea or water was drunk.
It is perhaps unsurprising that in terms of hydration there was little difference in the two experimental conditions. The important question is whether caffeine is a diuretic, but this study did not measure the caffeine in the tea. It also cannot comment on which of the two drinks tea or water are healthier overall.

Coffee and tea also count in your tally. Many used to believe that they were dehydrating, but that myth has been debunked. The diuretic effect does not offset hydration.
Alcohol is a huge dehydrator, says White. You should try to limit your intake, but if you are going to raise a glass, aim for at least a one-to-one ratio with water.
