Eight months into his tenure as President of the Church, President Nelson issued a statement in August 2018 regarding the name of the Church.
The Lord has impressed upon my mind the importance of the name He has revealed for His Church, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he wrote. We have work before us to bring ourselves in harmony with His will.
During the , President Nelson stressed, It is not a name change. It is not rebranding. It is not cosmetic. It is not a whim. And it is not inconsequential. Instead, it is a correction. It is the command of the Lord.
There are many worldly arguments against restoring the correct name of the Church, he continued, including digital needs and search engine optimization. But this is the Lords Church.
If this were a discussion about branding a man-made organization, those arguments might prevail, President Nelson said. But in this crucial matter, we look to Him whose Church this is and acknowledge that the Lords ways are not, and never will be, mans ways.
The new symbol is part of President Nelsons emphasis on the name of the Church and is not a rebranding effort, the Intellectual Property Division reaffirmed. Its about correct communication.
Honor The Symbols Reverence
The Intellectual Property Division is working to educate members to understand the intent of the new symbol. A large part of that effort is a focus on reverence.
The symbol has biblical roots in the Apostle Pauls metaphor in Ephesians, which describes how the Church is built upon the foundations of apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone . Depicting Christ under an arch serves as a reminder of His emergence from the tomb three days after His death.
Theres a real desire to honor the reverence of the content of the symbol, Broadbent said. We wouldnt be using it in areas that dont lend themselves to preserving that kind of dignity and that kind of reverence for the Savior.
He continued, People love it. They want to use it. They want to relate to it. The guidelines being developed will hopefully help members feel that connection.
The New Church Logo: A Designers Perspective & Analysis
As President Nelson began introducing the Churchs new symbol, it gave me a little designer anxiety. Mainly because he introduced the first of multiple concepts infused into the symbol, the first being Christ as the Cornerstone.
I thought, Please tell me theres more I wouldnt consider this any sort of progression in terms of the churchs visual identity.
Then he introduced the full symbol. My heart felt relieved to see more thought went into a logo for the church than a mere rectangle around 3 lines of justified text.
Let me clarify though, President Nelson did not call it a logo. And thats the truth, its not a logo in modern terms. It is a symbol. That doesnt detract from its usefulness though.
A notea logo only has the meaning we prescribe it. In that vein, I want to walk you through an analysis of the symbol which hopefully will give it more meaning for you.

And the new symbol of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a hit.
For one thing, the image of the Christus has eliminated that age-old question that adhered to the Angel Moroni logo: Who is that?
I know two sisters in Brigham City who stopped speaking to each other when the grandchildren of one sister asked who the figure was on top of the temple and she told them, Your aunt Juanita.
Of course, Ive heard that some people are concerned that the Christus on the symbol was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen, a Lutheran from Denmark.
But I say that makes a nice fit with the Restoration.
For Joseph Smith creating was often about assembling. When God created the earth, he organized it out of existing matter.
When Joseph restored the church, he used a few hymns from the Methodist and Catholic traditions, chose a version of the Bible created by Church of England scholars and even adapted the pulpits, pews and choir seats that the Protestants favored.
So using a Christus created by a Lutheran makes perfect sense.
After all, a collage is also a one-of-a-kind creation.
As for the doorway the arch over the image of the Christus in the symbol, my guess is it was based on some historical arch.
And I like the way the symbol is depicted simply, reverently and subtly.

Nelson announced that future temples would be built in Pittsburgh Syracuse, Utah Tallahassee, Florida Bahia Blanca, Argentina Benin City, Nigeria Lubumbashi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo Dubai, United Arab Emirates and Shanghai, China.
The temple in Shanghai will be the first to be built in China. The Pittsburgh temple will be the second to be built in this state. The Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple was completed in 2016.

Ever wonder about whether it is permissible to use the Church logo on your ward newsletter or Sunday program? How about a flyer for your ward Christmas party? The answer to both of these questions is no. This article addresses the proper use and display of the name of the Church and the official Church logotype.
Name of the Church
The of the Church may be used by wards, stakes, branches, and districts according to the following guidelines:
1. Always name the event and its sponsor as a prelude to the name of the Church. Examples:
- On a program: Sacrament Meeting Program of the Canyon First Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
- On a poster: Picnic sponsored by the Canyon First Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
2. The typeface of the name of the Church should not try to imitate or resemble the official Church logo.
Church Logo
The Church logo is registered as a trademark or otherwise legally-protected identifier of the Church worldwide. The logo should only be used on Church stationery, missionary name tags, and items published by Church headquarters. Individuals and Church units are not authorized to use the logo on anything they create.

Social Events And Gatherings
Additional meetings are also held at the meetinghouse. Church officers may conduct leadership meetings or host training sessions and classes. The ward or branch community may schedule social activities at the meetinghouse, including dances, dinners, holiday parties and musical presentations. The church’s Young Men and Young Women organizations meet at the meetinghouse once a week, where the youth participate in activities. At the start of 2020, the church implemented a new initiative for children and youth worldwide, which replaced all other church youth programs.
In LDS theology, a temple is considered to be a holy building, dedicated as a “House of the Lord” and held as more sacred than a typical meetinghouse or chapel. In temples, church members participate in ceremonies that are considered the most sacred in the church, including marriage, and an endowment ceremony that includes a washing and anointing, receiving a temple garment, and making covenants with God. Baptisms for the dead are performed in the temples as well.
In order to perform ordinances in temples on behalf of deceased family members, the church emphasizes genealogical research, and encourages its lay members to participate in genealogy.It operates FamilySearch, the largest genealogical organization in the world.
Restorationism And Prophetic Leadership
The LDS Church teaches that, subsequent to the death of Jesus and his original apostles, his church, along with the authority to act in Jesus Christ’s name and the church’s attendant spiritual gifts, were lost, due to a combination of external persecutions and internal heresies. The restorationas represented by the church began by Joseph Smithrefers to a return of the authentic priesthood power, spiritual gifts, ordinances, living prophets and revelation of the primitive Church of Christ. This restoration is associated with a number of events which are understood to have been necessary to re-establish the early Christian church found in the New Testament, and to prepare the earth for the Second Coming of Jesus. In particular, Latter-day Saints believe that angels appeared to Joseph Smith and a limited number of his associates, and bestowed various priesthood authorities on them.

The Church Will Never Be Destroyed
Thousands of years ago, the Lord said He would set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, . . . and it shall stand for ever . The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that kingdom. Although there have been periods of worldwide apostasy in the past, the Lord has promised that His Church will remain until Jesus Christ returns to reign personally on the earth. As members of the Church, it is our privilege to enjoy many blessings, to share those blessings with others, and to prepare for the Saviors coming.
The basic beliefs and traditions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have a cultural impact that distinguishes church members, practices and activities. The culture is geographically concentrated in the Mormon Corridor in the United States, and is present to a lesser extent in many places of the world where Latter-day Saints live.
The majority of Latter-day Saints live outside the United States. Therefore, even though the global differences are important, there are some common traits around Latter-day Saints worldwide.

A new symbol was introduced by the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and urged people to join in a fast to end the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Russell M. Nelson said the new symbol will help continue the effort to focus on the Churchs name.
Nelson announced the new symbol during the Saturday evening session of the churchs General Conference.
portrays the resurrected, living Lord reaching out to embrace all who will come unto Him, President Nelson said. This symbol should feel familiar to many, as we have long identified the restored gospel with the living, resurrected Christ.
The new symbol will be used on official literature, news and events of the Church Nelson said. It will remind all that this is the Saviors Church and that all we do, as members of His Church, centers on Jesus Christ and His gospel.
Nelson also encouraged members and those from around the world to fast on Good Friday, April 10 to help resolve the COVID-19 pandemic. He encouraged people to fast for two meals or 24-hours.
The church has more than 16 million members worldwide.

Graphic designer Randall Smith, owner of Modern8 Design, shares his opinion on the latest symbol and logo designs recently introduced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

President Russell M. Nelson unveiled the Thorvaldsen statue of the Christus, a statue that has become iconic to the church, as part of that new symbol or logo.
However, at least one designer believes the symbolism should have been more in keeping with the modern church as it moves forward in time rather than staying in the 1800s.
Randall Smith, owner of modern8 in Salt Lake City, said he is not surprised the church settled on the Christus.
Its a very safe logo, Smith said. Its sweet, safe and expected but not progressive.
A church statement concerning the new church symbol said, This new emblem emphasizes the name of Jesus Christ and His central role in all the Church does.
The symbol portrays the resurrected, living Lord reaching out to embrace all who will come unto him, Nelson said.

For months, church President Russell M. Nelson has been promising Latter-day Saints that the faiths April General Conference would be different than anything they had experienced before.
Exciting and memorable.
Indeed, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints twice-yearly gathering that got underway Saturday in downtown Salt Lake City was unlike any previous conference in recent memory but not for the reasons Nelson anticipated.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the man considered a prophet, seer and revelator to 16.5 million members worldwide addressed only a camera in a small auditorium rather than a crowded Conference Center audience.
Still, in the evening session, the 95-year-old Nelson made some dramatic announcements by introducing a new symbol of the faith, which includes an image of the Christus statue, and calling on the world to join in a pre-Easter fast on April 10 to seek relief from COVID-19.
During times of deep distress, he said, the most natural thing for us to do is to call upon our Heavenly Father and his son the master healer to show forth their marvelous power to bless the people of the earth.
This marks the second such fast that Nelson has led.
The Latter-day Saint authority also unveiled a new symbol for the worldwide church in a continuation of his efforts to emphasize the faiths full name and steer members, media, scholars and others away from using shortened terms such as Mormon and LDS.

Cosmology And Plan Of Salvation
The Mormon cosmology and plan of salvation include the doctrines of a pre-mortal life, an earthly mortal existence, three degrees of heaven, and exaltation.
According to these doctrines, every human spirit is a spiritual child of a Heavenly Father, and each has the potential to continue to learn, grow, and progress in the eternities, eventually achieving eternal life, which is to become one with God in the same way that Jesus Christ is one with the Father, thus allowing the children of God to become divine beings that is, gods themselves. To obtain this state of godhood, the church teaches that one must have faith in Jesus Christ, repent of his or her sins, strive to keep the commandments faithfully, and participate in a sequence of ceremonial covenants called ordinances, which include baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, the endowment, and celestial marriage.
Informal And Abbreviated Names
Because of the belief in the Book of Mormon among Joseph Smiths followers, in the 1830s people outside the church began to refer to its members as Mormonites or Mormons and the church as the Mormon Church. Smith and other church leaders considered these informal or abbreviated terms to be derogatory and inappropriate, as editorialized in 1834:
Others may call themselves by their own, or by other names, and have the privilege of wearing them without our changing them or attempting so to do but we do not accept the above title, nor shall we wear it as our name, though it may be lavished out upon us double to what it has heretofore been.

Today, it remains common for individuals and media outside of the church to refer to it as the Mormon Church. Church leaders have resisted these practices and have asked members not to refer to the church in these ways.
In 2001, the LDS Church Saints issued a style guide on its name, requesting that those writing about the church adhere to the following guidelines:
- In the first reference, the full name of the Church is preferred: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
- Please avoid the use of Mormon Church, LDS Church or the Church of the Latter-day Saints.
- When a shortened reference is needed, the terms the Church or the Church of Jesus Christ are encouraged.
- When referring to Church members, the term Latter-day Saints is preferred, though Mormons is acceptable.
