Sexual Orientation Change Efforts

Sermon on the Mount: Treasures in Heaven

Because of its ban against same-sex sexual activity and same-sex marriage the LDS Church has a long history of teaching that its adherents who are attracted to the same sex can and should attempt to alter their feelings through righteous striving and sexual orientation change efforts . These current teachings and policies leave homosexual members with the option of potentially harmful attempts to change their sexual orientation, entering a mixed-orientation opposite-sex marriage, or living a celibate lifestyle without any sexual expression .:11:20â21

While the LDS church has somewhat softened its stance toward LGBTQ individuals in recent years, leaders continued to communicate into 2015 that changing one’s sexual orientation was possible through personal righteousness, prayer, faith in Christ, psychotherapy, and group therapy and retreats. In the 60s and 70s Church leaders taught that homosexuality was a curable disease and they encouraged self-help attempts by homosexual members to change their sexual orientation and cultivate heterosexual feelings.:13â19 To assist in this, leaders developed an aversion therapy program on BYU campus for gay adolescents and adults in ’59 since simply being attracted to people of the same sex was an excommunicable sin under church president Kimball.:2 The on-campus aversion therapy program lasted into the mid-90s.:90

List Of Films Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter

Learn how and when to remove this template message)

This list of films of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints includes the non-commercial motion pictures commissioned by or officially produced by the church. Such films were originally used in the homes or worship services of church members, or in visitors’ centers on Temple Square or near one of the church’s temples. Most church films were produced by LDS Motion Picture Studios. Since the opening of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah in 1993, some feature-length films were premiered and exclusively shown in its Legacy Theatre, prior to release for broader use. In the 1970s, the church also commissioned Brigham Young University to produce short films for use in the Church Educational System. These films, shown mostly in the seminaries and institutes of religion, teach religious principles, church history, and general kindness. Released on VHS , they became popular home entertainment. A wide variety of these films are now available through BYU’s Creative Works Office.

These films differ from those of Mormon cinema, which are produced without official church involvement.

Political Involvement Around Lgbt Rights

The LDS Church has been involved with many pieces of legislation relating to LGBT discrimination and same-sex marriage. These include playing an important role in defeating same-sex marriage legalization in Hawaii , Alaska , Nebraska , Nevada , California , and Utah .:2,65,69,71,78,85 Leaders have stated that it will become involved in political matters if it perceives that there is a moral issue at stake and wields considerable influence on a national level. In 1997 then church president Gordon Hinckley declared the church would “do all it can to stop the recognition of same-sex marriage in the United States”, and the apostle M. Russell Ballard has said the church is “locked in” if anything interferes with the principle of marriage only being between a man and a woman.:73

The church opposes same-sex marriage, but does not object to rights regarding hospitalization and medical care, fair housing and employment rights, or probate rights, so long as these do not infringe on the integrity of the family or the constitutional rights of churches and their adherents to administer and practice their religion free from government interference. Church leaders are prohibited from employing their authority to perform same-sex marriages, and church property cannot be used for same-sex marriages or receptions.

Views On Gender Diversity And Identity

Expressions and identities for sexuality and gender are “separate, but related” aspects of a person and stem from similar biological origins. According to current church policy, transgender and other gender diverse individuals who have undergone an âelective transsexual operationâ are banned from temple rites or receiving priesthood authority. Additionally, a transgender individual who has undergone gender-confirming surgery may be baptized only with First Presidency approval, and those considering it are barred from baptism. The church has acknowledged differences between gender identity and sexual orientation stating that they have “unfinished business in teaching on .” Gender identity and roles play an important part in Latter-Day Saint teachings which teaches a strict binary of spiritual gender as literal offspring of divine parents.

Who Is Jesus Christ To Mormons Powered By Happy Scribe

Alright guys, lets talk about Jesus. Who does the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints believe Christ is? Is the church of Jesus Christ. A Christian church. Was Christ really a handsome white guy like he is in all the pictures?

For answers to this and more, stay tuned.

So who is Jesus Christ? We believe hes our savior. He suffered and died in payment for our sins. He was born to marry in Bethlehem and died on the cross at Calvary. He lived a perfect sinless life.

He taught the people through parables. He cleansed the temple at Jerusalem. He was baptized in the Jordan River. He healed the sick, ate with sinners, performed miracles. He was executed on the cross.

But after three days, he took his life back and was resurrected together with God the Father and the Holy Ghost. Jesus Christ is God. Now, some people believe that Latterday Saints do not qualify as a Christian faith because our beliefs are so different from mainstream Christianity. Whether or not we qualify as Christians is frankly, subjective, based on what your definition of a true Christ is. If your definition of a Christian is someone who believes Christ is their savior and tries to follow his teachings, then yes, Id say were undeniably Christian.

That will take you to an article about this topic on our website. And have a great day.

You.

Book Of Mormon Videos Begin Filming For Final Season

Five years after production began for the Book of Mormon Videos, filming is underway for the fifth and final season.

The filming project began in 2017 and according to Book of Mormon Videos director Adam Anderegg, its main purpose is adding to the experience of reading the Book of Mormon and making it more accessible to everyone.

The Book of Mormon is a book of scripture set in the ancient Americas and for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it accompanies the Bible as another testament of Jesus Christ.

Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who visited the filming set on Friday said, The Book of Mormon, the written copy and these videos, have a great purpose: to bring all ages closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Those people who have never had scriptures now have it in a medium where they can get the message without having to have something written, Anderegg said.

The videos are a personal study tool for members and an easy introduction for those who want to know more.

These videos are not meant to replace any of your reading of the Book of Mormon, but they are meant to enhance it, Elder Rasband said.

The first three seasons have already been released and the season 4 is expected to come out this fall. Season 5 will cover major accounts from the last third of The Book of Mormon. Elder LeGrand Curtis said there are several factors that influence which stories are chosen for film.

Lgbt Mormon Suicides And Homelessness

The Goal: A Story of Faith, Friendship and Forgiveness

In society at large LGBT individuals especially youth are at a higher risk of depression, anxiety, and suicide due to minority stress stemming from societal anti-LGBT biases and stigma, rejection, and internalized homophobia. Some individuals and organizations have linked church teachings against homosexuality and the treatment of LGBT Mormons by other members and leaders as contributing to LGBT Mormon suicides. LDS historian Gregory Prince stated that by condemning homosexuality as “evil, self-inflicted, and impossible in postmortal existence” LDS church leaders have enabled harsh behavior by its members with the alarming number of LDS LGBT homeless and Utah’s highest per capita teen suicide rate in the country manifesting the effects of this cruelty.:4 LGBT Mormon suicides and experiences with suicidal ideation have received media coverage.

Lgbt Students At Brigham Young University

Brigham Young University is the largest religious university in North America and is the flagship institution of the LDS Church’s educational system. Large surveys of over 7,000 BYU students in 2020 and 2017 found that over 13% had marked their sexual orientation as something other than âstrictly heterosexual,â while the other survey showed that .2% had reported their gender identity as transgender or something other than cisgender male or female.

A BYU study from 1950 to 1972 showed that 10% of BYU men and 2% of BYU women indicated having had a “homosexual experience.”:45 Several LGBT rights organizations have criticized BYU’s Honor Code as it relates to LGBT students and The Princeton Review has regularly ranked BYU among the most LGBT-unfriendly schools in the United States. Terminology Used By The Church

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter

Church leaders now teach that it’s okay to identify as gay. In the past church leaders have stated that “homosexual”, “lesbian”, and “gay” should only be used as adjectives to describe thoughts, feelings, or behaviors, and never as nouns to describe people. Church leaders and organizations have made reference to homosexuality as a sexual orientation. Leaders have only begun directly addressing bisexual members since October 2016. The church and its members have often referred to homosexuality with the term “same-gender attraction”. The church no longer speaks on the origins of homosexuality.

Church Releases Fourth Season Of Book Of Mormon Videos As Production Of Fifth And Final Season Underway

Season four of the Book of Mormon videos debuted on Sunday, Oct. 2, with episodes being released each Friday through the end of November.

The new season recounts the visit of Jesus Christ to the inhabitants of the Americas following His crucifixion.

The fourth season was filmed over the summer of 2021 near Springville, Utah, on a large set built to depict the land of Bountiful from the Book of Mormon.

More than 1,000 actors, staff and crew members have worked together to bring these stories to life since the Book of Mormon Videos were first released in the fall of 2019, leaving a lasting impact on many of those involved.

Getting to know my cast members and getting to know the man who played the Savior, Anthony, and just seeing a lot of people willing to take time out of their days was a really unique experience that Im so grateful I was a part of, said Hassan El-Chiekh, a BYU student who plays Jonas, son of Timothy, in the series.

The fifth and final season of the Book of Mormon Videos is being produced right now and will cover stories from the books of Mosiah, Alma and Helaman, including the story of the 2,000 stripling warriors.

The final season will be released fall of 2023 in anticipation of the Churchs study of the Book of Mormon in 2024 with the purpose of helping all who watch them to increase their faith in Jesus Christ.
