How To Take Most Advantage Of Diet Elements In Green Tea

Since flavonol content can vary from plant to plant and by brewing method, its important to know how to select and prepare your green tea to ensure that it contains the maximum dietary benefit possible.

To maximize the amount of pound-shedding potential in your cup of tea:

  • Choose a premium quality green tea farmed using the Chagusaba method. This method seems to be the most consistent method of producing tea plants that contain the highest number and quality of fat-busting flavonols.
  • Hot water seems to release more catechins into your green tea. Brew your tea in water that is 100 degrees Celsius for the best results.
  • Steeping your green tea for too long may unfavorably impact the taste. Steeping for too short a time can mean that you’re missing out on important nutrients. For an optimal brew, steep your tea for 3-4 minutes before consuming.

Lose Weight Fast with Green Tea

Its true that green tea can raise your metabolic rate, so you burn more calories, says David Nieman, DrPH, director of the human performance laboratory at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. Nieman, who has studied green tea extensively, says this effect is probably due to a combination of its caffeine and catechinsantioxidants that are plentiful in green tea and present in smaller amounts in some fruits, dark chocolate, and red wine.

But the effect is likely to lead to little, if any, change on the scale. People think if you drink a few cups of green tea, youll see the fat melt away, Nieman says. Thats just not going to happen.

And the evidence that supplements derived from green tea do much for weight loss is minimal. Some studies have found modest reductions in body weight associated with green tea supplementation, according to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements. But other human trials have found no benefit. “Taken together, the findings of these studies suggest that if green tea is an effective weight-loss aid, any effect it has is small and not likely to be clinically relevant,”write the authors of an NIH fact sheet.

Whats more, experts warn against taking the large amounts used in many studiesand recommended on many supplement labels. There have been reports of serious liver damage in people who used green tea supplements.

Which Type Of Green Tea Is Best For Weight Loss

Does the type of green tea you buy and drink matter? It might.

There havent been any studies or sources saying that certain types of green tea are better than others for weight loss. That said, if you want the best chances for weight loss, you may want to err on the side of caution.

We recommend you buy the best quality green tea available to you: preferably organic loose-leaf green tea, though some tea companies have excellent bagged teas. Choose reliably sourced green tea from a company you can trust that doesnt overly process or add chemicals while tea is grown, dried, or packaged.

If you want the most powerful type of green tea, try matcha tea! This is considered the most potent and healthiest type you can drink, for weight loss support included.

It is a concentrated dried powder version of green tea and very strong, with way more compounds than the standard dried leaf type including EGCG and other catechins. Though be warned: it contains more caffeine and can be more stimulating, too.

How Green Tea Can Help You Lose Weight

It is loaded with antioxidants and various plant compounds that may benefit your health.

This article examines the evidence surrounding green tea and weight loss.

Compound In Green Tea ‘kills Cancer Cells’

Green Tea Can Help You Lose Weight: Does it Really Works?

A compound in green tea has been found to kill mouth cancer cells while leaving healthy cells undamaged.

While it was known the drink could help fight the disease, scientists say they have now worked out why.

The breakthrough involved identifying the process by which the substance attacks cancer cells.

This, it is hoped, will lead to new treatments for oral cancer, as well as other forms of the disease.

Scientists at Penn State University, in the US, explored the specific mechanism by which the green tea compound is able to target the diseased cells.

The compound EGCG, found in green tea, kills mouth cancer cells while leaving healthy cells undamaged, past studies have found

Earlier studies have shown that epigallocatechin-3-gallate , a compound found in green tea, killed mouth cancer cells without harming normal cells.

But researchers did not understand the reasons behind the substance’s ability to kill the cancer cells.

Scientists now believe EGCG may trigger a process in the mitochondria – the powerhouse of a cell that produces energy – that leads to cell death.

Professor Joshua Lambert, a specialist in food science and co-director of Penn State’s Center for Plant and Mushroom Foods for Health, said: ‘EGCG is doing something to damage the mitochondria.

‘That mitochondrial damage sets up a cycle causing more damage and it spirals out, until the cell undergoes programmed cell death.

How Many Times And When To Green Tea For Weight Loss

Some say that to hit that sweet spot with using green tea for weight loss, youll want to drink 2 to 3 cups per day. That means you only need to drink around 2 or 2.5 cups if you want!

Because of the average persons metabolism and circadian rhythm most recommend you get your green tea fix in the morning, first thing as you start your day just like a cup of coffee.

One study shows that drinking it on an empty stomach before eating yields the best results. Drinking it after meals is less effective, since food can interfere with how much of the antioxidant you absorb.

For people on the go: instead of measuring and brewing one cup or mug at a time, try measuring all 2 to 3 cups and brew your tea in a to-go thermos to take into work, to trips, meetings, exercisingyou name it!

Does Green Tea Prevent Cancer

Compounds called catechins are often credited for green teas cancer-fighting potential. These antioxidants have the ability to block the action of molecules called free radicals, which can cause changes in healthy cells that sometimes lead to cancer. But theres no solid proof yet that the catechins in green tea help to prevent cancer in humans, despite some promising studies in test tubes and animals.

In 2009 the Cochrane Library published a review of 51 studies that included a total of more than 1.6 million participants. Each study investigated whether consuming green tea reduced the risk of developing specific types of cancer, including those of the breast, colon, oral cavity, liver, pancreas, and prostate.

The results were conflicting, says lead author Katja Boehm, PhD, a health psychologist at Private University Witten/Herdecke in Germany. After scrutinizing the data, Boehm says, the evidence of a benefit wasnt strong enough to recommend using green tea to protect against cancer.

In a 2020 update to that review, the authors concluded that the evidence for a beneficial effect against cancer remains limited, with inconsistent results between studies.

Green Tea May Help Boost Metabolism

Green tea can boost metabolism because it contains caffeine. This allows you to burn more calories and helps with weight loss. “The stimulant properties of the caffeine increase the oxidation rate within the cell’s metabolism which …. increases the calories we burn,” says Hunnes.

In a small 2008 study, researchers gave obese participants either green tea or a placebo over the course of 12 weeks. The participants did not change their activity level or diets. After 12 weeks, those who had green tea lost 7.3 pounds more than those who had the placebo, and burned 183.38 calories more with their resting energy expenditure.

Why It Might Work

Why does green tea help lose weight

There are a number of theories on why green teaespecially the main catechin called epigallocatechin gallatemight help you out a bit if youre looking to lose weight.

Its possible that catechins in green tea may actually inhibit carbohydrate digestion and absorption, Kirkpatrick says, citing a report in the journal Scientific Reports that showed lower carb absorption after people downed a green tea extract.

I think some of the most promising ones are looking at green teas effects on the microbiome, she says. Research is increasingly finding that green tea alters the guts microbiome, and those changes could be what makes it helpful for dropping pounds.

There may even be some evidence that black tea can contribute to weight loss as well.

Green Tea Helps Turn Up The Body’s Natural Fat

Green tea has been shown in studies to contain a remarkable compound called EGCG, or Epigallocatechin Gallate, which is such a powerful polyphenol that it has been shown in the lab to halt tumor growth in its tracks. Other teas, such as Oolong are also healthy, but green tea has the most EGCG of any other tea.

EGCG has been called a “chemopreventative” polyphenol since it has been shown in cancer studies to hinder growth. The way it does that is to use a “fuel gauge” pathway called AMPK in the body that essentially keeps tabs on when fuel is plentiful and when fuel is short . While this has major implications for cancer growth, checking it from proliferating, EGCG also manages to help in burning fat.

When EGCG is present, it uses that pathway to signal to your body that “fuel is scarce” which then turns on your natural signals to start fat burning instead of looking for ready energy. This means that drinking green tea, even as little as two cups a day, can help your body burn more fat, especially belly fat. In one famous study that is often cited, subjects who were given green tea extract lose between .2 and 3.5 kg more in 12 weeks than those not given green tea. While 3.5 kilograms doesn’t sound like a lot but this means that by changing nothing else you can lose six pounds with the help of green tea.

How To Prepare Green Tea For Weight Loss

To optimize green teas health benefits for weight loss, youll need to prepare it a little differently from other teas:

  • Step 1: Bring water to boil in a clean stovetop pot or kettle.
  • Step 2: While waiting, prep tea for brewing. Prepare to use about one teabag per cup or an average-sized mug of hot water. If using loose leaf green tea, add roughly 1-2 tablespoons tea per cup or average-sized mug in your infuser, tea ball, etc.
  • Step 3: Once the water reaches a boil, let it rest for about 10 minutes before pouring over your tea. Boiling water will make your green tea taste more bitter, and it also destroys some of its most potent health compounds especially the catechins that are important to weight loss. If you want to get an exact hot water temperature for optimal green tea brewing, wait for the hot water to cool to temperatures between 150 and 180F though one source says that around 85F was found to be the most effective in one study.
  • Step 4: Sweeten, add cream, sip, and enjoy once cooled enough to drink.
