What Kind Of Matcha Should I Buy
There are so many variations of matcha out there these days! I like to look for brands that clearly disclose their sourcing. The matcha should be a bright, vibrant green color. If it is dull or olive/brown in color, it has likely been oxidized.
I recently discovered Golde Pure Matcha and Im obsessed! It dissolves super well and the flavor is delicious.
Overview: How To Make An Iced Matcha Latte
Latte Ingredients And Notes
Matcha Powder: When you buy matcha powder there are two types youll find. Ones that include added sugars and other ingredients, and ones that are purely matcha powder. Get the type that is pure matcha powder, no extra stuff! You can find it online, at Whole Foods, or in Asian markets.
Dairy-Free Milk: I used unsweetened almond milk for my recipe, but I also recommend oat milk, soy milk, or light coconut milk. Oat milk and soy milk will allow the flavor of the matcha to shine through. Whereas youll taste an undertone of coconut if you choose to go with coconut milk.
Maple Syrup: You can add more or less than one tablespoon of maple syrup in the recipe. However, I recommend starting with one, tasting, and adding more if you think it needs more sweetness.
Vanilla Extract: The vanilla extract gives a slight hint of vanilla flavor that youll find in the Starbucks version.

Why Is Matcha Good For You
Matcha is said to be the purest form of green tea. It generally comes in a powdered form and can be mixed into teas, cakes, and even chocolate recipes. It has more antioxidant properties than drinking green tea alone because you consume the whole leaf when you drink the powdered form.
Matcha offers the following benefits:
- Burns fat by increasing metabolism
- Increases energy
- Powerful antioxidants
- Can reduce blood sugar and cholesterol
If youd like more information, the U.S. National Library of Medicine has an in-depth literature review where you can read about the health benefits of matcha.
Why Youll Love This Recipe
- Iced matcha lattes are incredibly quick and easy to make at home. All you need is matcha green tea, milk , ice, water, and a sweetener like honey or sugar.
- No need for any traditional matcha tools, like a bamboo whisk. My trick is to use a cocktail shaker or a jar with a tight lid.
- Its layered! Sugar is the secret to making layered drinks and this recipe will show you exactly how to put the drink together.
For full ingredients and instructions, scroll down to see the recipe.
Tea Sommeliers Tip: The sugar content keeps the layers separated. The liquid that has the most sugar will sink to the bottom. Honey is added to the milk and poured into the cup first. The matcha doesnt have any sugar in it so itll sit on top of the sweetened milk.

Add Warm Water & Make A Paste
With your matcha measured & ready to go, its now time to add 1/4 cup of warm water from your kettle. Youll want your water a warm 75-85°C any hotter and you run the risk of burning your matcha & giving it a bitter taste. Finally, whisk your matcha into a smooth, clump-free paste.
Dont have a thermometer?Let your boiled kettle sit for 7-10 minutes before using.

This refreshing, antioxidant-packed matcha green tea latte is a healthful, rejuvenating morning pick-me-up. Its also surprisingly simple to prepare in just a few minutes a dairy-free, refined sugar-free, vegan recipe to enjoy every day!
Having posted a recipe for a delicious iced matcha latte this summer, it somehow completely escaped me that I had yet to post a method for a simple, delicious hot matcha latte. If you follow me on Instagram, then youll probably notice that this matcha green tea latte has been featured in my stories over many mornings across the last three years.
Now Im finally putting fingers to keyboard to type down my method on how to make matcha lattes at home in just a few simple steps!
I love to drink matcha as a coffee alternative. Not only does it contain less caffeine, but the caffeine it does contain doesnt give you any of the nasty side-effects that caffeine can give: twitchiness, energy crash, etc. Which means its perfect for those long, busy days .
This matcha latte is light, earthy, and creamy and can be made dairy or dairy-free. Though it isnt 100% necessary, I also suggest picking up a small handheld milk frother. You can pick one up for literally just a few £/$, and they are pure genius for any at-home coffee/hot drink lovers.

Iced Keto Matcha Green Tea Latte

This keto matcha green tea latte is a great alternative to ice coffee. Its a refreshing low-carb drink thats low in calories and has less than 1 gram carb!
I used to be a heavy coffee drinker, but recently cut back to only one cup per day. Some days, I try to go without, but I have a hard time going in the morning without it.
One of my favorite summer drinks has always been iced coffee. I would just brew a large pot of strong coffee and keep it in the fridge.
Then, when I wanted a slightly sweet refreshment, Id pour a cup over ice and heavy cream. For flavor and sweetness, Id use either a sugar free coffee syrup or flavored stevia.

Warming The Heavy Cream
Next, whisk in the heavy cream and 1/2 cup of unsweetened almond milk into the saucepan. If you dont have a milk frother at home, add the entire amount of almond milk!
Bring the saucepan to medium heat and warm for 2-3 minutes until hot and small bubbles start to form on the side of the saucepan.
Remove from heat and serve.

Diy Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte
Light, creamy and refreshing iced matcha latte made at home, in the blender in under a minute. This Starbucks copycat recipe taste just as good for a fraction of the price!
The milk and matcha powder is mixed in the blender to remove any lumps. This means you can double or triple the recipe and store the remaining Matcha in the fridge for the rest of the week. To use, simply pour into a cup of ice and enjoy!
The trick to making a good matcha latte is a good quality matcha powder. Matcha powder is one of those things that you should spend the few extra pennies and get the good brand because matcha varies in quality. Generally, the lighter the matcha the better quality. Stay away from matcha that looks olive or brownish.
What is Matcha Powder?
Matcha is a type of powdered green tea that is mostly grown and produced in Japan. During the last few weeks of their growth, the tea leaves are shaded from the sun to increase their chlorophyll content and produce the vibrant green color. The leaves are then ground to produce a fine powder which is used in recipes for making teas, lattes, smoothies, and even ice-cream.
How To Mix Matcha And Water Properly To Make Iced Matcha Latte
For this specific recipe, we introduce to you a quick, simple and hassle-free way to make an iced matcha latte on the go. This means minimal equipment and ingredients are required.
- Matcha powder is a suspension, it does not dissolve in water. This means that the powder can still mix well in cold water of lower temperatures.
- If you are using a bottle to make your iced matcha latte, we recommend the shaking method since all ingredients can be added and mixed in the bottle.
- You can also use a bamboo whisk to pre-mix your matcha and water if you prefer to add milk directly and skip the shaking method. Note: If you are using a tall glass to make your matcha latte, consider purchasing a longer bamboo whisk. These also come with smaller heads that allow you to whisk your matcha in a smaller bowl/glass.
- We also do not recommend battery-operated frothers because these tend to clump up the matcha. They do best where there is a lower amount of matcha compared to water.
- You may use a blender if you prefer that. We usually avoid blenders because of the extra cleanup required.

How To Make A Starbucks Iced Matcha Latte At Home
Making a matcha latte at home is incredibly simple with just 4 ingredients! Here are some tips.
Is Matcha Tea Good For You
Yes! Unlike most teas where you just steep the leaves, matcha gives you the chance to consume the entire leaf and all of its benefits. Matcha contains L-Theanine, an amino acid that reduces stress, enhances mood, and gives you an energy boost to remain alert for a while after consumption.
A cup of matcha will also give you a nice dose of antioxidants, one of the many known health benefits of green tea. Consequently, however, one cup of matcha also contains roughly 60 milligrams of caffeine, which is still less caffeine than your standard cup of coffee , but one should always be safe to not overindulge in too many caffeinated matcha drinks.

Easy Tweaks To This Dairy
You can use any dairy-free milk that works for you
- From almond milk to oat milk to cashew milk. This recipe is vertile, so you can use whatever works best for you.
You can change around the sweetener too
- I like using honey, but if you want this drink to be Vegan, you can use maple syrup or brown sugar.
- You can also try maple sugar, or date syrup. YUM.
PS- I discovered Elmhurst Almond Milk recently and it is the best tasting almond milk that I have found just a PSA that I had to share.
How To Make Matcha Tea Without Whisk
The traditional way to prepare matcha tea is to sift the matcha powder into a small bowl.
Then, pour in a small amount of hot water and whisk vigorously to evenly disperse the powder in the water.
So its definitely possible to make a homemade latte without it.
There are other ways to avoid, or at least minimize, clumps of matcha in your latte.
My Starbucks matcha green tea lattes have always had lumps of matcha in them, so I dont mind some lumps.
If you want a completely smooth matcha latte, I recommend putting the matcha mixture and oat milk in a blender.
You could also use a milk frother to remove any lumps. Jade Leaf has this Electric Matcha Whisk + Milk Frother – Barista Style Preparation for Matcha Green Tea & Lattes that I’m thinking about purchasing.
My favorite way to combine the matcha mixture and the oat milk with the least amount of clumping is to use a mason jar with a lid.
I put the ingredients in the mason jar, put on the lid, and shake like crazy. This seems like the best way.
If you still have clumps of matcha powder after doing this, you can pour the latte through a mesh tea strainer.
The best part of using a mason jar is that you can make this delicious matcha latte ahead of time.
Store it in a mason jar with a lid, without ice, in the fridge for up to a week.
You can prep several matcha drinks in mason jars or other airtight containers and store them in the fridge, so you can have a delicious drink ready-to-drink every morning with little to no effort.

What Is Ceremonial Grade Matcha
Now, as with most things, there are differing qualities or grades when it comes to matcha tea.
- Ceremonial Grade: The best of the three grades. It is said that the tea leaves in ceremonial grade matcha are stone ground. The powder is a bright, vibrant green and has the most complex flavor palate. My favorite brand is Matcha Bloom, which uses gyokuro leaves farmed in Japan, which require more care and attention than the commonly-used Tencha leaves. Use the code CAROC98 to get 10% off your first purchase at Matcha Bloom!
- Premium Grade: This grade comprises much of what you might drink at a coffee shop or purchase at a tea shop and usually has a refined, somewhat grassy flavor to it. A good premium matcha can taste almost as good as ceremonial matcha.
- Culinary / Ingredient Grade: As it sounds, this matcha is great for cooking. However, it can be a little too bitter when drinking. Use this green tea in recipes like this matcha roll cake or this matcha and dark chocolate bread pudding and youll be in great shape! This is sometimes also referred to as Cafe Grade matcha. Bonus: its usually the cheapest of the matcha grades.
Thats all well and good. But which one should I buy?
When I buy matcha or other forms of green tea, I always go with tea that was made in Japan. If you can find it, sticking with ceremonial and premium grades give you the most options when drinking and cooking. I always buy ceremonial grade tea when I can.
Heat And Froth The Milk
You can heat the milk in the microwave or in a small saucepan on the stovetop. You, ideally, dont want to heat the milk above around 160ºF/70ºC. Once again, if the milk is too hot then it will lead to bitter matcha.
If you dont have a thermometer, then simply heat the milk till it simmers but has yet to boil. Once heated, you can froth the milk

There are several ways for you to achieve a great airy, frothy milk at home, even without an automatic or handheld milk frother .
