Watch Out For Vitamin K

I have a history of blood clots in my lungs. Is it true that I should not drink green tea since it contains a lot of vitamin K?

Andrew Weil, M.D. | November 27, 2002

Since you have a history of blood clots, I assume that you are taking Coumadin or another blood-thinning drug. If so, you do have to be aware of your intake of vitamin K, an essential nutrient necessary for blood clotting that occurs in many vegetables. Vitamin K antagonizes the action of Coumadin. People taking anticoagulants should maintain a consistent intake of vitamin K so that their drug dosage does not have to be adjusted and readjusted. For instance, if you eat lots of vegetables, make sure that the total amount you eat each day is relatively constant and be sure to discuss any major change in your diet with your physician.

It is true that dried green tea leaves have a very high concentration of vitamin K, but a cup of brewed green tea provides only a small amount, 0.03 mcg per 3.5 fluid ounces . In fact, research published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association in 1995 showed that tea is not a significant dietary source of vitamin K and, as you know, green tea provides lots of other health benefits. The only beverages you should avoid while on blood-thinners are alcoholic drinks of all types since alcohol can affect your response to these drugs.

Do Green Vegetables Make Blood Thicker

Do green vegetables make blood thicker? Nitrogen, a chemical found in green leafy vegetables, plays a major role in delivering oxygen throughout the body by influencing blood thickness. A steady intake of nitrogen improves the bodys oxygen delivery system.

Do green vegetables thicken or thin the blood? Vitamin K Helps Blood Clot

This means that eating foods rich in vitamin K can interact with blood thinning drugs, making them less effective. Therefore, its important to talk with your doctor to make sure that your dosage is appropriate for your diet.

    Herbs With Antiplatelet Properties

Review of the literature indicates that the majority of herbal supplements that potentially interfere with blood clotting produce their effects through inhibition of platelet activation and aggregation . It has been reported that these antiplatelet effects are mediated by mechanisms involving inhibition of formation, release, and/or actions of platelet-activating/aggregating endogenous mediators by constituent compounds present in the different herbal products reviewed, as depicted in Fig. . The commonly used herbal supplements in the USA with reported antiplatelet properties are discussed below.

What Are The Types Of Blood Thinners

There are two types of blood thinnersantiplatelets and anticoagulants. Contrary to their name, blood thinners do not actually thin your blood. Both types affect how blood normally clots in your body, but they do it in different ways:

    • Antiplatelets

Antiplatelets lower your bloods ability to clot by preventing plateletscell fragments in your bloodfrom sticking together and forming clots. Examples include aspirin, clopidogrel , prasugrel , and ticagrelor .

    • Anticoagulants

Anticoagulants lower your bloods ability to clot by stopping specific proteins and enzymes, also known as clotting factors, from doing their job to help blood clots form.

Stay Safe While Taking Your Blood Thinner

You can be bleeding but not see any blood. For example, if you fall and hit your head, bleeding can occur inside your skull. Or, if you hurt your arm during a fall and then notice a large purple bruise, this means you are bleeding under your skin.

Because you are taking a blood thinner, you should try not to hurt yourself and cause bleeding. You need to be careful when you use knives, scissors, razors, or any sharp object that can make you bleed.

You also need to avoid activities and sports that could cause injury. Swimming and walking are safe activities. If you would like to start a new activity that will increase the amount of exercise you get every day, talk to your doctor.

You can still do many things that you enjoy. If you like to work in the yard, you still can. Just be sure to wear sturdy shoes and gloves to protect yourself. If you like to ride your bike, be sure you wear a helmet.

Tell others.Keep a current list of all the medicines you take. Ask your doctor about whether you should wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace. If you are badly injured and unable to speak, the bracelet lets health care workers know that you are taking a blood thinner.

    While You Take Warfarin:

Eat the same amount of vitamin K each day. Do not change the amount of vitamin K you normally have from foods or supplements. This helps keep your INR at the same healthy level.

    • A big increase in vitamin K can lower your INR. This can cause dangerous clotting in your blood.
    • A big decrease in vitamin K can raise your INR. This can make it harder for your blood to clot. It can cause you to bleed too much. Do not avoid foods that contain vitamin K.

    About Your Blood Thinner

Your doctor has prescribed a medicine called a blood thinner to prevent blood clots. Blood clots can put you at risk for heart attack, stroke, and other serious medical problems. A blood thinner is a kind of drug called an anticoagulant . “Anti” means against and “coagulant” means to thicken into a gel or solid.

Blood thinner drugs work well when they are used correctly. To help you learn about your medicine, your doctor has given you this booklet to read.

Depending on where you receive care, you may be seen by a doctor, nurse, physicians assistant, nurse practitioner, pharmacist, or other health care professional. The term “doctor” is used in this booklet to refer to the person who helps you manage your blood thinner medicine.

You and your doctor will work together as a team to make sure that taking your blood thinner does not stop you from living well and safely. The information in this booklet will help you understand why you are taking a blood thinner and how to keep yourself healthy. Please take time to read all of the information in this booklet.

There are different types of blood thinners. The most common blood thinner that doctors prescribe is warfarin . Your doctor may also discuss using one of the newer blood thinners depending on your individual situation.

Warning!Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to get pregnant. Many blood thinners can cause birth defects or bleeding that may harm your unborn child.

    What to do about:

    • signs of anaemia – speak to your doctor who may arrange a blood test
    • feeling dizzy or lightheaded – if edoxaban makes you feel dizzy when you stand up, try getting up very slowly or stay sitting down until you feel better. If you begin to feel dizzy, lie down so that you don’t faint, then sit until you feel better. If the dizziness doesn’t go away or keeps happening, speak to your doctor. They may arrange a blood test to see if you have anaemia.
    • feeling or being sick – it may help to avoid rich or spicy food while you’re taking edoxaban. If you’re being sick, drink plenty of water by having small and frequent sips to avoid dehydration.
    • stomach pain or indigestion – try to rest and relax. Putting a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may also help. If you are in a lot of pain, speak to your pharmacist or doctor. If you need something to ease discomfort from indigestion, try taking an antacid. But don’t put off seeing a pharmacist or doctor.

    Herbs With Anticoagulant Properties

Herbal supplements reported to have anticoagulant activities have been shown to contain coumarins, together with other constituents. Coumarins exist as natural as well as synthetic compounds, and the widely used prescription anticoagulant, warfarin, is a synthetic derivative. These compounds are blockers of the action of vitamin K, and, as such, interfere with the synthesis of clotting factors and clot formation .2). Below are described the commonly used herbal supplements with reported anticoagulant activities.

    Chamomile

Chamomile is commonly used for its claimed benefits as an antispasmodic and a sedative . Being classified as a dietary supplement, it is marketed in the forms of capsules, fluid extracts, and tea bags. Chamomile consists of multiple compounds, including coumarins, heniarin, flavonoids, farnesol, nerolidol, germacranolide, and various glycosides . Despite the presence of coumarins, the effect of chamomile per se on the coagulation process has not been investigated. However, an isolated case of enhanced bleeding in a patient taking warfarin with chamomile has not been reported . Thus, the effect of the herb alone on hemostasis is not clear. However, until more definite information is available, it is advisable to be vigilant of its potential effect on blood clotting.
