The Three Most Distinctive Beliefs In Mormonism

He Is Risen

Mormonism, also known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is a religion that is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ as restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith as the first prophet of the current dispensation. While there are many beliefs that are central to the Mormon faith, there are three that are particularly distinctive and set it apart from other religions.

The first distinctive belief in Mormonism is the idea of ongoing revelation and personal revelation. Mormons believe that God continues to reveal His will and His truth to His children through modern-day prophets. They also believe that individuals can receive personal revelation through prayer and study of the scriptures, and that this revelation can help guide them in their daily lives and decisions. This emphasis on ongoing revelation helps to keep the Mormon faith relevant and dynamic, and allows for the possibility of new teachings and insights.

The third distinctive belief in Mormonism is the idea of eternal families. Mormons believe that families can be together forever, not just in this life but in the next. They believe that through the ordinances of temple marriage and sealing, families can be bound together for eternity. This belief in eternal families is a central aspect of Mormon doctrine and is reflected in many of their practices and teachings.

Legal Trouble And Leadership Struggles

A Topical Guide to the Scriptures of the Church of Jesus Christ of ...

Polygamy is illegal in all 50 states of the United States as well as Canada and Mexico. Attempts to overturn the illegality based on right of religious freedom have been unsuccessful. In 2003, the church received increased attention from the state of Utah when police officer Rodney Holm, a member of the church, was convicted of unlawful sexual conduct with a 16- or 17-year-old and one count of bigamy for his marriage to and impregnation of plural wife Ruth Stubbs. The conviction was the first legal action against a member of the FLDS Church since the Short Creek raid.

On January 10, 2004, Dan Barlow and about 20 other men were excommunicated from the church and stripped of their wives and children , and the right to live in the town. The same day two teenage girls reportedly fled the towns with the aid of activist Flora Jessop, who advocates plural wives’ escape from polygamy. The two girls, Fawn Broadbent and Fawn Holm, soon found themselves in a highly publicized dispute over their freedom and custody. After the allegations against their parents were proven false, Flora helped them flee state custody together on February 15, and they ended up in Salt Lake City at Fawn Holm’s brother Carl’s house.

In October 2004, Flora Jessop reported that David Allred purchased a 60-acre parcel of land near Mancos, Colorado, about the same time he bought the Schleicher County property. Allred told authorities the parcel was to be used as a hunting retreat.

Love Content Wish It Had Carplay

I love the access to so much inspired content. I use this app every day. If it want for the content I would have given it a 3. My two biggest frustrations are. 1) It has a lot of problems downloading the audio files. This has happened on all of my devices. We live in the country and I travel around the world and often dont have a signal, so when it will not let me download offline content, I miss out. I drive a lot, and dont always have a signal. I would love it to work with CarPlay. Needing to look at your phone to choose content or change it is not safe, so then I just listen to something ells. If it worked with your car stereo, it would be a huge upgrade, especially if you could download all content for offline use. Third, I wish all of my tabs would be synced between devices.

Cosmology And Plan Of Salvation

The Goal: A Story of Faith, Friendship and Forgiveness

The Mormon cosmology and plan of salvation include the doctrines of a pre-mortal life, an earthly mortal existence, three degrees of heaven, and exaltation.

According to these doctrines, every human spirit is a spiritual child of a Heavenly Father, and each has the potential to continue to learn, grow, and progress in the eternities, eventually achieving eternal life, which is to become one with God in the same way that Jesus Christ is one with the Father, thus allowing the children of God to become divine beings that is, gods themselves. This view on the doctrine of theosis is also referred to as becoming a “joint-heir with Christ”. The process by which this is accomplished is called exaltation, a doctrine which includes the reunification of the mortal family after the resurrection and the ability to have spirit children in the afterlife and inherit a portion of God’s kingdom. To obtain this state of godhood, the church teaches that one must have faith in Jesus Christ, repent of his or her sins, strive to keep the commandments faithfully, and participate in a sequence of ceremonial covenants called ordinances, which include baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, the endowment, and celestial marriage.

The Scriptures Are Available To Us Today

  • What are some of the blessings that we enjoy today because the scriptures are so accessible?

When the Lordâs servants speak or write under the influence of the Holy Ghost, their words become scripture . From the beginning, the Lord has commanded His prophets to keep a record of His revelations and His dealings with His children. He said: âI command all men, both in the east and in the west, and in the north, and in the south, and in the islands of the sea, that they shall write the words which I speak unto them for out of the books which shall be written I will judge the world, every man according to their works, according to that which is writtenâ .

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints accepts four books as scripture: the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. These books are called the standard works of the Church. The inspired words of our living prophets are also accepted as scripture.

For teachers: To encourage discussion about the four standard works, you could assign each class member or family member a number between 1 and 4. Ask those with number 1 to read what this chapter teaches about the Bible, those with number 2 to read what this chapter teaches about the Book of Mormon, those with number 3 to read what this chapter teaches about the Doctrine and Covenants, and those with number 4 to read what this chapter teaches about the Pearl of Great Price. Then ask them to share what they have learned.

Restorationism And Prophetic Leadership

The LDS Church teaches that, subsequent to the death of Jesus and his original apostles, his church, along with the authority to act in Jesus Christ’s name and the church’s attendant spiritual gifts, were lost, due to a combination of external persecutions and internal heresies. The restorationas represented by the church began by Joseph Smithrefers to a return of the authentic priesthood power, spiritual gifts, ordinances, living prophets and revelation of the primitive Church of Christ. This restoration is associated with a number of events which are understood to have been necessary to re-establish the early Christian church found in the New Testament, and to prepare the earth for the Second Coming of Jesus. In particular, Latter-day Saints believe that angels appeared to Joseph Smith and a limited number of his associates, and bestowed various priesthood authorities on them.

The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is a religious sect of the fundamentalist Mormon denominations whose members practice polygamy. The fundamentalist Mormon movement emerged in the early 20th century, when its founding members were excommunicated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , largely because of their refusal to abandon the practice of plural marriage after it was renounced in the “Second Manifesto” . The FLDS Church as a distinct group traces its origins to the 1950s in the Short Creek community , where the group is still based.

What Is The Book Of Mormon

LDS Scripture of the Day: Doctrine & Covenants 115:4

In addition to the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, the Book of Mormon, named after one of its ancient prophets, is another testament of Jesus Christ. It contains the writings of prophets, giving an account of Gods dealings with the peoples who lived anciently on the American continent. For Latter-day Saints it stands alongside the Old and New Testaments of the Bible as holy scripture.

What is the purpose of life?

How can I find happiness and peace now?

Does God know me and hear my prayers?

What Is A Temple

Temples existed throughout biblical times. These buildings were considered the house of the Lord . Latter-day Saint temples are likewise considered houses of the Lord by Church members.

To Latter-day Saints, temples are sacred buildings in which they are taught about the central role of Christ in Gods plan of salvation and their personal relationship with God.

In temples, members of the Church make covenants, or promises, with God to live a virtuous and faithful life. They also participate in ordinances on behalf of their deceased ancestors.

Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are also used to perform marriage ceremonies in which the faithful are promised eternal life with their families. For members of the Church, family is of central importance.

Why Do We Need More Books Of Scripture

Many wonder what the additional scriptures of Mormonism offer. What information is contained in the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price? First, each book of scripture complements the others. Elder Oaks said:

We believe that God will give new revelations on the meaning of scriptures previously canonized, meanings that were not evident in earlier times. Public revelations on the meaning of earlier scriptures come through those we sustain as prophets, seers, and revelators. Examples of public revelations are the numerous additions and clarifications in the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible and in the Doctrine and Covenants revelations on the meaning of Bible passages. These public revelations usually illuminate scriptural passages that are doctrinal rather than those that are descriptive or directive.

Canon, Dahl and Welch explain:

The pages of the Book of Mormon also contain interpretations, additions, and corrections to chapters from Isaiah, as well as quotations from heretofore unknown prophets of ancient Israel , together with a precious account of the resurrected Saviors personal ministry among inhabitants of ancient America.

New scripture promotes faith in other sacred texts. Mormon 7:9 adds that the Nephite records were written for the intent that ye may believe .

Latter-day scriptures also provide direction and guidance for the modern Church of Jesus Christ. Elder Boyd K. Packer said:
