Acne Treatment Using Green Tea

Women ages 25 to 45 who had been diagnosed with moderate to severe acne were randomly divided into two groups for the study, which appeared in Complementary Therapies in Medicine. Each group was given a pill to pop three times a day for four weeks, with one group receiving capsules that contained 500 mg of green tea extract , and the other swallowing placebos. At the end of the four weeks, women who took the extract had significantly less acne on their noses, chins, and around their mouths than the placebo group.

The complexion-clearing effect is most likely due to the anti-inflammatory properties of compounds in green tea, specifically one called epigallocatehin gallate or EGCG. Since acne is often caused by inflammation, lotions and creams made with the antioxidant-rich extract can help prevent and treat minor breakouts. But the study results indicate that green tea supplements could be another, possibly stronger line of defense.

Add Green Tea To Your Regimen

Still, with all the health benefits of green tea, there’s no reason why you can’t use it as an addition to your acne treatment routine. While it’s not enough to completely clear your skin on its own, it may help to give you some improvement.

You can simply drink a cup or two a day. Some people say green tea can make them feel a little queasy when drank on an empty stomach, so if this sounds like you try sipping your tea after a meal.

Green tea can be used topically, too. Many skin care products and cosmetics contain green tea extract.

How much good you’re actually going to get from the green tea in your cosmetic products is debatable, and has a lot to do with how much green tea extract is in the product. Some sources cite green tea as an anti-ager for the skin.

Green Tea For Skin: A Quick Primer

Is Green Tea Good For Acne? Find Out What The Science Says!

Antioxidants are good molecules that fight damage from free radicalsthe unstable molecules. Oxidative stress caused due to free radicals can manifest in the body as cancer, heart disease and obesity, and on the face as fine lines and dark spots. These oxidants appear in a higher density at places with higher levels of pollution, cigarette smoke and radiation, and can be created internally due to an unhealthy diet. Antioxidants, when taken orally or applied topically, have the ability to neutralise these free radicals and reduce oxidative stress

Green tea is rich in polyphenols and flavonoidsthe most popular of which is called epigallocatechin-3-gallate , which green tea has in spades. Therefore, green tea extract has been shown to improve skin barrier functions, serve as antioxidant protection and boost sun protection. Due to the high concentration of polyphenols, topical application gives the skin antioxidant qualities, which help to neutralise free radicals in the environment. It also boosts skin hydration by improving water retention and reducing transepidermal water loss. Green tea is shown to reduce sunburn and sun damage-induced redness as well, along with promoting a reduction in cell damage.

Matcha Lowers Levels Of Hormones That Cause Acne

5 DAYS GREEN TEA MASK ON ACNE PRONE SKIN

Insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1, is hormone triggered by insulin and dairy consumption its an absolute nightmare for acne.

Over the course of a few weeks, your skin goes through a natural process of shedding and replacing old skin cells. IGF-1 causes your skin to produce way too many cells, which rise to the surface of the skin and block the pore. A blocked pore is ripe territory for acne bacteria to swarm in and create an infection that can lead to acne.

EGCG limits IGF-1s skin-damaging effects by directly blocking IGF-1 receptors and preventing them from ever getting overstimulated in the first place. EGCG also limits the production of sebum oil . This means you have a lower chance of getting a blocked pore in the first place.

Choosing Products With Green Tea For Skin Problems

If you want to buy products that include green tea for skin problems, you must first understand how effective the tea will be at treating these issues. For example, green tea would not have much effect on dark spots or hyperpigmentation because it does not have any skin lightening effects like other natural ingredients do, such as licorice root. Because the main benefit of green tea for skin problems is its antioxidant properties, you will most likely benefit from it if you suffer from acne, rosacea, psoriasis, or other inflammatory skin issues. If you do decide to add green tea masks or creams to your skin care kit, be sure to follow all packaging instructions to reduce your risk of side effects.

How Good Is Green Tea At Treating Breakouts

Green teas effects on reducing breakouts are well-researched and do not lack scientific evidence. Most studies were performed with topical application of green tea, while oral consumption requires more data to draw a conclusion. For instance, one clinical trial from 2008 compared the daily use of 2% tea lotion with 5% zinc solution for the treatment of acne. After two months, green tea was found more effective, reducing inflammatory lesions by more than 50% in 85% of cases. In a separate study, 1% EGCG and 5% EGCG reduced non-inflammatory acne by 79% and inflammatory breakouts by 89% after eight weeks. Nevertheless, over time more studies have shown that green tea could be beneficial in acne treatment by reducing pimples.

A study at Provident Clinical Research in Indiana evaluated overweight individuals who were put on an exercise program. Some received special green tea beverage while others did not. Those who consumed the green tea had a greater loss of belly fat. A Chinese study of obese women with PCOS showed that consumption of modest levels of green tea extract resulting in slight weight loss and slight improvement in menstrual cycle. However, the amount of green tea in this study may have been too low to have maximum effect. Another study showed weight loss and reduced waist circumference in people who were moderately overweight. In a survey of 569 men and 641 women, 43% had consumed tea one or more times per week for at least 6 months. Habitual tea drinkers for more than 10 years showed a 19.6% reduction in body fat percentage and a 2.1% reduction in waist-to-hip ratio compared with non-habitual tea drinkers.

The Antioxidant Potential Of Green Tea

Pretty much every article about the health effects of green tea talks about antioxidants. While in most cases hype far outruns reality, green tea has significant antioxidant potential. Green tea, like many fruits and berries, contains lot of polyphenols. Polyphenols have been studied for their antioxidant potential with promising results. In the case of green tea, lot of research attention has focus on a catechin called -epigallocatechin-3-gallate .

EGCG is the predominant antioxidant in most forms of green tea, and its also the most potent. For example, one review study noted:

EGCG has been shown to be 25 to 100 times more potent than vitamins C and E in terms of antioxidant activity

Another study measured the antioxidant potential of various forms of green tea. The study concluded that ½ cup of green tea has the same antioxidant potential as 1 kg of fresh fruit. Thats pretty impressive in my books!

But we have to keep in mind that high antioxidant potential doesnt mean anything yet. Its just a proxy measure. What we are interested are the real health effects of green tea. Because too often what looks really promising in in vitro studies turns out to be completely useless in living humans. Whats the use of all those antioxidants if the body doesnt absorb them and you just pee them out?

Green Tea Polyphenols Help Protect Against Uv

EGCG has some pretty powerful benefits following sun/UV exposure to your skin:

    • EGCG repairs damaged DNA after UV exposure
    • EGCG stimulates your immune systems T cells to kill cells damaged beyond repair
    • EGCG blocks nasty tumor-promoters
    • EGCG stimulates the powerful tumor-destroyer and immune system superhero IL-12

While this doesnt seem to directly relate to acne on the surface, it might, if we dig a little.

That same DNA damage following UV exposure to your skin may also suppress your immune system, so its possible that green/white tea could benefit acne by repairing this DNA damage, and re-stimulating your immune system back to healthy levels, following sun exposure. This could allow your body to better fight off P. acnes bacteria inside clogged pores, and to more quickly clean up ruptured sebocytes .

Thats a good reason to drink green tea!
