The Doctrine Of Life After Death:

What Is The Book of Mormon? | Now You Know

Historic Christianity

Mormonism

Eternal life in heaven with God for those who have trusted in Jesus Christ. Eternal separation from Gods presence in hell for the unsaved. One of three levels of glory:

1. Exaltation in the Celestial Kingdom for faithful Mormons where people may become gods or angels Then shall they be gods .

2. Terrestrial Kingdom for righteous non-Mormons These are they who are honorable men of the earth, who were blinded by the craftiness of men. These are they who receive of his glory, but not of his fullness .

3. Telestial Kingdom for wicked and ungodly These are they who are liars, and sorcerers, and adulterers . . . who suffer the wrath of God on earth.

Confirmation By The Gift Of The Holy Ghost

The Holy Ghost, as mentioned before, is part of the Godhead and is a spirit that is given to every new member of the church after theyre baptized as a gift to them.

The Holy Ghost is there to influence us to do good, but we have to remain worthy to keep the holy spirit with us.

It is something that can only be around to help you make good decisions and let you know what God wants from you if you are making the effort to choose the right.

You always want the spirit with you and can tell when its not because you dont have that happy, light, good, warm feeling inside you anymore.

Thats how Mormons are able to discern between good and evil. It is truly a major blessing.

Queen Elizabeth Ii: 7 Times Latter

Her reign began when David O. McKay was president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints70 years later, Queen Elizabeth II has passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

Queen Elizabeth was a woman of faith who looked to Jesus Christs example. As she said in her 2015 Christmas message, Despite being displaced and persecuted throughout his short life, Christs unchanging message was not one of revenge or violence but simply that we should love one another.

President Thomas S. Monson commended the Queen in 2012 for her love of God, her acts of charity, and her sublime example of service and duty.

Six months ago, in celebration of her Platinum Jubilee, the European Area Presidency of the Church sent through the Queens private secretary, Sir Edward Young. The tribute read in part, During the past 70 years Her Majesty has faced and overcome challenges with fortitude. Yet despite challenging times often on a global scale, she continued to set such a wonderful example of service and devotion, of dignity, and decency. She has shown immense care for people of all nationalities, faiths, and ages.

Over the decades of her service and devotion, the Queen had many brushes with members and leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Here is a look back on a few.

What Are The Key Differences Between Mormonism And Christianity

Sean McDowell June 18, 2012

Mormonism is everywhere. The Republican nominee for president is a Mormon, there is a play on Broadway about the Book of Mormon and the LDS Church has launched a multimillion-dollar ad campaign called Im a Mormon. In light of the recent interest in Mormonism, it will be helpful to compare and contrast some of the key differences between Mormonism and Christianity.

Mormonism puts a heavy burden of works on its followers. Although there are some passages that talk about grace and free salvation , the overwhelming emphasis in the Mormon scriptures is on earning salvation through obedience to commandments and refraining from sin. For example, Alma 5:27 says, Have ye walked, keeping yourselves blameless before God? Could ye say, if ye were called to die at this time, within yourselves, that ye have been sufficiently humble? The next passage says you must be entirely stripped of pride or you cannot meet God.

The view of faith in the Mormon scriptures differs from the Bible. Alma 32:17 says, Yea,there are many who do say: If thou wilt show unto us a sign from heaven, then we shall know of a surety then we shall believe. Now I ask, is this faith? Behold, I say unto you, Nay for if a man knoweth a thing he hath no cause to believe, for he knoweth it. In other words, faith involves believing something we do not know. If we knew it, there would be no need for faith.

Lgbt Students At Brigham Young University

Flds Vs Lds

Brigham Young University is the largest religious university in North America and is the flagship institution of the LDS Church’s educational system. Large surveys of over 7,000 BYU students in 2020 and 2017 found that over 13% had marked their sexual orientation as something other than âstrictly heterosexual,â while the other survey showed that .2% had reported their gender identity as transgender or something other than cisgender male or female.

A BYU study from 1950 to 1972 showed that 10% of BYU men and 2% of BYU women indicated having had a “homosexual experience.”:45 Several LGBT rights organizations have criticized BYU’s Honor Code as it relates to LGBT students and The Princeton Review has regularly ranked BYU among the most LGBT-unfriendly schools in the United States. As of 2017 BYU campus offered no official LGBT-specific resources.

Members Of Fairmormon Are Not Paid For Their Efforts

FairMormon is a 501 non-profit, and all of its members, with the exception of the part-time Bookstore manager, are unpaid volunteers.

All efforts devoted to FairMormon are performed only after its members spend time with their families, perform their “day job,” and fulfill church responsibilities. FairMormon is not, and should not be, the top priority in any of its members’ lives. This means that the work sometimes proceeds slowly, but it does proceed forward.

Mormons In America Certain In Their Beliefs Uncertain Of Their Place In Society

With a Mormon candidate among the front-runners for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, a musical about Mormons playing on Broadway and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints running television ads about ordinary Mormons, America is in the midst of what some media accounts have dubbed a Mormon moment. But how do Mormons themselves feel about the media spotlight, the election campaign and their place in America? A major new survey finds a mixed picture: Many Mormons feel they are misunderstood, discriminated against and not accepted by other Americans as part of mainstream society. Yet, at the same time, a majority of Mormons think that acceptance of Mormonism is rising. Overwhelmingly, they are satisfied with their lives and content with their communities. And most say they think the country is ready to elect a Mormon president.

These are among the findings of a comprehensive survey by the Pew Research Centers Forum on Religion & Public Life of more than 1,000 Mormons across the country the first of its kind ever published by a non-LDS research organization. Previous studies, including the Pew Forums 2007 U.S. Religious Landscape Survey, have found that Mormons make up slightly less than 2% of the U.S. public.

Are Mormons And Latter Day Saints The Same

From time to time Mormons are asked to clarify what the correct name of their church is, and how to appropriately refer to a member of their religion.

Mormon Helping Hands Participate in Project Twin Streams

The correct name of the church to which Mormons belong is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

While most members of the Church do not mind being called Mormons, a more formal way to refer to a person who belongs to the faith is a Latter-day Saint, or a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The nickname Mormon came about because of one of the Churchs sacred texts, The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

Book of Mormon

Latter-day Saints look to The Bible, The Book of Mormon, The Doctine and Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price as scripture.

On some occasions media professionals and others refer to The Mormon Church, or The Church of Latter-day Saints, or The LDS Church.

While these names are not offensive to members of the Church, it is appreciated when the full and correct name of the Church is used. This is because Latter-day Saints are devoted followers of Jesus Christ and having His name included in the name of the Church is important to them.

Historical Differences Between The Churches

Mormons in Utah react to New Name Guidelines for LDS Church

The RLDS Church was founded by the confederation of a number of smaller groups that declined to migrate with Brigham Young to Utah Territory or follow any of the others vying to become the successor to Joseph Smith. Prior to the 1860 Amboy Conference, in which the church was formally “reorganized” into the RLDS Church, numerous doctrinal differences were espoused by the leaders of the various splinter groups. Following the reorganization, these differences were solidified into a litany of what might now be called “wedge issues” that would distinguish it from Young’s LDS Church in Utah.

The differences enumerated below characterize the major differences between Community of Christ and the LDS Church.

The Founder Joseph Smith Jr

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was officially founded by Joseph Smith, Jr. and five associates on April 6, 1830, in Fayette, New York.

When Smith was fourteen years old, he claimed to have had a religious experience, in which both God the Father and Jesus Christ spoke to him and instructed him not to affiliate himself with any denomination. Three years later, he reported being visited again by a heavenly angel named Moroni who told him that a book written on gold plates had been buried and Smith had been charged with its protection.

Smith allegedly retrieved the gold plates in 1827 and began the process of translating their engravings. On March 26, 1830, when his dictation was complete, Smith published the work as the Book of Mormon. Shortly thereafter, on April 6, 1830, Smith also founded the first Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints church.

To avoid conflict and persecution encountered for his claims, Smith and his followers moved to Kirtland, Ohio early in 1831. Here the churchs first temple was built and some Mormons believed erroneously that Jesus Millennial reign had begun. However, the controversy and mob violence that had plagued Smith followed him to Kirtland and in early 1832, Joseph was dragged from his bedroom in the dead of night, tarred and feathered, and left for dead.

In February, 1844, Smith announced his candidacy for President of the United States, with Sidney Rigdon as his vice-presidential running mate.

Religious Beliefs And Practices

A large majority of Mormons say religion is very important in their lives, more than four-in-five pray at least once a day and three-quarters attend religious services weekly or more. Almost all Mormons accept the traditional Christian teaching that Jesus rose from the dead. Mormons are also nearly unanimous in accepting other teachings of their church that are different from the beliefs of other Christian traditions. For example, 94% of Mormons believe that the president of the LDS Church is a prophet and 91% believe that the Book of Mormon was written by ancient prophets and then translated by Joseph Smith. However, more than one-in-five Mormons say they find some of the churchs teachings hard to accept, and nearly one-in-ten say they seldom or never attend religious services.

Jesus Wasnt A Teetotaler

The ancient Jews were a temperate peopletemperate used in the right sense. They used light wine as part of the regular diet . Jesus, you will recall, was called a wine-drinker , the charge being not that he drank, but that he drank too much .

The New Testament nowhere says the Jews claimed Jesus should have been a teetotaler. Wine was used also at weddings, and our Lord clearly approved of the practice of wine drinking, since he made wine from water when the wine was depleted at Cana .

Something Mormons seldom refer to is wines medicinal uses . You will recall that Paul advised Timothy to take wine to ease stomach pains . Such apostolic admonitions coexist uneasily with Mormonisms strictures against wine.

Mormons practice tithing, yet would be shocked to learn that in a key Old Testament passage where tithing is discussed, God says: you shall turn into money, and bind up the money in your hand, and go to the place which the Lord your God chooses, and spend the money for whatever you desire, oxen, or sheep, or wine or strong drink, whatever your appetite craves and you shall eat there before the Lord your God and rejoice, you and your household . Were also told, Give strong drink to him who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress let them drink and forget their poverty, and remember their misery no more .

The Book Of Mormon Is The Second Sacred Text Of Mormons

Pin on I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

Next to the bible, the LDS church believes in the Book of Mormon. Mormon prophets who lived from 600 BC to AD 400 wrote the book. As we touched on above, the Prophet Joseph Smith translated the ancient book by what he called a revelation from God.

It has since been translated into more than 80 languages and more than 150 million copies have been printed. According to the book, Christ established his church in the Old World, or ancient America. People lived in unity for nearly 200 years after Jesus. Later, people abandoned Christs teachings and a war of extermination occurred.

The book refers to Jesus almost 4,000 times. The LDS church calls it another testament of Jesus Christ.

The Mormon Vs Christian Church

Christianity

Christians believe that all true Christians make up the true church. Theologians often refer to this reality as the universal or invisible church. It is what Paul referred to in 1 Corinthians 1:2: together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Further, Christians believe that the local church is a group of true Christians who have voluntarily covenanted together to worship God as a church .

Mormonism

Since the very beginning, the Mormons have rejected all other churches outside of the Mormon church. At various times Mormon leaders and teachers have referred to the Christian church as the church of the devil or the church of abomination .

Today, seldom is that sort of directness apparent in Mormon publications. However, historically and canonically , this is how the Christian church is viewed.

Life After Death

Christianity

Christians believe that there is life after physical death for everyone. When those who are saved by faith in Christ die, they depart to be with Christ . They will all eventually dwell with God in the New Heaven and New Earth. Those who perish in their sin will suffer eternal punishment, away from the presence of God .

Mormonism

Those who do attain to eternal life are eligible for eternal progression, the process over time of becoming gods. Just as God the Father progressed to become God, so they themselves will eventually attain deity.

Many of the central concepts of the Mormon religion are laid out in the Articles of Faith, a 13-point list of the Latter-day Saints’ most important beliefs.

These key elements of the faith include belief in God the Father, his Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit belief in modern prophets and continuing revelation belief that through Christ’s atonement all mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of Christ’s Gospel belief in the importance of repentance and baptism by immersion for the forgiveness of sins and belief in the right of all people to worship God as they please. The Articles of Faith also affirm a belief in the Bible as the word of God, insofar as it is correctly translated, and in the Book of Mormon as an equally important scriptural source.

Terminology Used By The Church

Church leaders now teach that it’s okay to identify as gay. In the past church leaders have stated that “homosexual”, “lesbian”, and “gay” should only be used as adjectives to describe thoughts, feelings, or behaviors, and never as nouns to describe people. Church leaders and organizations have made reference to homosexuality as a sexual orientation. Leaders have only begun directly addressing bisexual members since October 2016. The church and its members have often referred to homosexuality with the term “same-gender attraction”. The church no longer speaks on the origins of homosexuality.
