Green Tea & Prostate Cancer: Implications

Prostate cancer is typically a slow-growing cancer, Henning says. That makes it an ideal cancer to try diet interventions to slow it even more.

âGreen tea is high in polyphenols and itâs convenient,â she says.

Other research has found that green tea may slow prostate cancer. An Italian study found that men who had a precursor to prostate cancer and drank green tea were less likely to get prostate cancer, Henning says.

Sumanta Pal, MD, assistant professor of medical oncology at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, Calif., reviewed the study findings for WebMD.

The Shanghai Women Healths Study

Detailed methods of the Shanghai Womens Health Study are previously published. Briefly, 74,942 Chinese women aged 40 to 70 years were interviewed from March 1997 to May 2000 . Trained interviewers elicited information on demographic characteristics, medical history, anthropometrics, usual dietary habits, physical activities, and other lifestyle factors. Measurements were performed at the in-person interview for weight, height, and circumferences of the waist and hips. The study was approved by all relevant institutional review boards in China and the United States.

Cohort follow-up and outcome ascertainment

The SWHS participants were tracked for cancer occurrence by biennial follow-up surveys and annual record linkage to the population-based Shanghai Cancer Registry and death certificates collected by the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The response rates for the follow-up survey were 99.8% , 98.7% , and 96.7% . All cancer cases were verified by home visits and medical record review. In order to allow for the delay in records processing, the date of the last follow-up was set as Dec, 31, 2005 for study participants, 6 months after the most recent record linkage .

Green Tea & Breast Cancer

Other researchers reported that an extract from green tea, Polyphenon E, may help inhibit breast cancer by affecting substances called growth factors. Growth factors are involved in the signals that tell breast cancer to grow.

In earlier research, Katherine Crew, MD, assistant professor of medicine and epidemiology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, had assigned 40 women already treated for breast cancer to take 400, 600, or 800 milligrams of the extract or to take a placebo twice daily for six months.

That was a study to examine any toxic effects of the extract. For the current study, she evaluated blood and urine samples from 34 of the women to see how the extract might work as a cancer fighter.

âWe wanted to better understand the biological effects,â she says.

âAfter two months of Polyphenon E, there was a reduction in hepatocyte growth factor,â she says. This is one of the growth factors that affect breast cancer cell growth, spread, and invasion. That reduction declined and was not different from the placebo group at four months, however.

Itâs still too early to recommend green tea extract as a way to prevent breast cancer, Crew says.

Are There Safety Considerations Regarding Tea Consumption

Tea as a food item is generally recognized as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Safety studies have looked at the consumption of up to 1200 mg of EGCG in supplement form in healthy adults over 1- to 4-week time periods . The adverse effects reported in these studies included excess intestinal gas, nausea, heartburn, stomach ache, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache, and muscle pain . In a Japanese study, children aged 6 to 16 years consumed a green tea beverage containing 576 mg catechins or 75 mg catechins for 24 weeks with no adverse effects . The safety of higher doses of catechins in children is not known.

Aluminum, a neurotoxic element, is found in varying quantities in tea plants. Studies have found concentrations of aluminum in infusions of green and black teas that range from 14 to 27 micrograms per liter to 431 to 2239 g/L . The variations in aluminum content may be due to different soil conditions, different harvesting periods, and water quality . Aluminum can accumulate in the body and cause osteomalacia and neurodegenerative disorders, especially in individuals with renal failure . However, it is not clear how much of the aluminum in tea is bioavailable, and there is no evidence of any aluminum toxicity associated with drinking tea .

Study Affirms Green Teas Colorectal Cancer Prevention

A new study not only validates the findings from epidemiological and animal studies, it also provides insight into how green tea protects against colorectal cancers.

First, in a basic lab study, researchers showed that the green tea polyphenol EGCG suppressed the activity of deadly colorectal cancer stem cells.8

Like all stem cells, cancer stem cells are extremely robust. And because they divide infrequently, they are relatively resistant to chemo- and radiation therapies. Cancer stem cells are widely held to be responsible for the recurrence of treated cancers, functioning in essence as malignant seeds that can restart the malignant process even after the bulk of a tumor has been destroyed.9-11

The way EGCG suppressed cancer stem cells was by downregulating a fundamental signaling pathway calledWnt/beta-catenin.8 This pathway is crucial in controlling the development of stem cells into functioning cells in tissues. Abnormal activation of the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway is a potent cancer promoter.12,13

This pathway is already a target for pharmaceutical drug developers. Now, the authors of this study suggest that EGCGs ability to suppress this signaling pathway could make it a promising agent for colorectal cancer intervention.8

Epidemiologic Studies

More than 50 epidemiologic studies of the association between tea consumption and cancer risk have been published since 2006. The results of these studies have often been inconsistent, but some have linked tea consumption to reduced risks of cancers of the colon, breast, ovary, prostate, and lung . The inconsistent results may be due to variables such as differences in tea preparation and consumption, the types of tea studied , the methods of tea production, the bioavailability of tea compounds, genetic variation in how people respond to tea consumption, the concomitant use of tobacco and alcohol, and other lifestyle factors that may influence a persons risk of developing cancer, such as physical activity or weight status.

Clinical Trials

Several clinical trials have investigated the role of tea and tea polyphenols in cancer prevention . However, few trials have examined the effects of tea or tea polyphenols on cancer incidence or mortality.

What Is Green Tea

China and Japan have used green tea as a medicine for many years. The tea is made from the steamed, unfermented leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. It is also called Chinese tea.

Manufacturers promote it as a dietary supplement. They claim that it helps control blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure and weight. People also drink it because they believe it might prevent certain types of cancer.

Four studies suggest green tea may prevent the deadly disease by reducing or reversing DNA damage.

Japanese researchers reviewing green tea and cancer prevention discovered that women who drank ten mini Japanese-style cups of green tea daily experienced a delayed cancer onset.

How long was the delay?

More than seven years longer than cancer onset in those drinking less than three cups of green tea a day. Why does green tea have such a dramatically delaying effect on cancer?

A second study, Consumption of Green Tea Causes Rapid Increase in Plasma Antioxidant Power in Humans, found that green tea contains polyphenolic antioxidants.

The researchers tested five men and five women to see whether their bloods antioxidant levels changed after they drank a 13.5-ounce cup of green tea.

Their blood and urine samples showed a clear and rapid spike in antioxidant levels within just 40 minutes of consuming the tea.

The researchers observed that their higher antioxidant level lowers oxidative damage to DNA and may help lower cancer risk.

In a controlled trial from the Hong Kong Polytechnic Universitys Department of Health Technology, researchers divided 18 healthy volunteers into three random groups for four weeks.

They were looking specifically at green teas genoprotective effects.

  • Group 1 drank 2 cups of water per day .
  • Group 2 drank 2 cups of longjing green tea per day.
  • Group 3 drank 2 cups of screw-shaped green tea per day.

Is Green Tea Safe

While there are several side effects to watch out for, green tea is considered safe by the FDA when used in moderation. Most of these negative side effects are due to the caffeine content and only occur when the beverage is consumed in large amounts. Stick to suggested amounts and avoid green tea if you are sensitive to caffeine. If you suffer from any illnesses that predispose you to side effects, consult with your physician before drinking green tea.
