Ogden And Provo Temples
When studies in the 1960s showed that 52 percent of all temple ordinance work of the Church was being done in three of its 13 temples , it was determined that two more temples in heavily populated areas of Utah would greatly relieve the pressure on the other three.
Thus, Tabernacle Square in downtown Ogden was selected as a temple site for that area, to serve some 135,000 members of the Church. The other was in Provo, on a site northeast of Brigham Young University, near the mouth of Rock Canyon and within walking distance of BYU.
The design of these two sacred structures has resulted in landmarks of impressive and dramatic beauty. Both were built from the same interior design, but the exteriors, though similar in shape and constructed of gleaming white cast stone, are varied. The stone on the Provo Temple has a bas relief floral design, repeated in its 180-foot tower. The Ogden Temple stone has a fluted appearance, interspaced with decorative metal grillwork, with the fluted effect impressively repeated in the tower. Beautiful gold windows of directional glass are distinctive in both temples.
Larger than the European temples but not as elaborate as those in Oakland and Los Angeles, they contain four floors, one below ground and three above. The Ogden Temple was dedicated January 18, 1972, and the Provo Temple February 9, 1972, both by President Joseph Fielding Smith.

At the conclusion of the Endowment ordinance, participants enter the celestial room. There are no ceremonies performed in this room. Rather, it is a place of quiet peace, prayer, and reflection meant to symbolize heaven, where we may live forever with our family in the presence of our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Beyond Alberta And Today
A branch of the church was organized in Edmonton in 1933, with the Edmonton Stake established in 1960. The Calgary Stake was established in 1953. In 1960, Alberta resident N. Eldon Tanner was called as a church general authority of the church he became a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1962 and a member of the First Presidency in 1963.
In 1998, a temple was announced for Edmonton and in December 1999 church president Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the Edmonton Alberta Temple. In 2008, a temple was announced for Calgary by church president Thomas S. Monson. The Calgary Alberta Temple was dedicated in October 2012.
As of December 31, 2018, the LDS Church reported 197,710 members, 50 stakes, 345 wards, 5 districts, 147 branches, 8 missions, 8 temples, and 159 Family History Centers in Canada.
In Canada, the church’s Aid Fund donated $185,000 to a newly rebuilt food bank in Medicine Hat, Alberta in February 2022. The money will help fund one commercial and two teaching kitchens in the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub.

New Temples Announced During April 2022 General Conference
SALT LAKE CITY The locations of 17 new temples were announced during the 192nd Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
President Russell M. Nelson made the announcement towards the end of the afternoon session on Sunday, April 3.
The new temples will be built at or near the following locations:
- Wellington, New Zealand
- Montpelier, Idaho
- Modesto, California
In his concluding remarks at the April 2022 #GeneralConference, President announced plans to build 17 new temples throughout the world.

Vicarious Work For The Dead
One of the greatest reasons why LDS temples are important is that the necessary ordinances of baptism, gift of the Holy Ghost, the endowment, and sealings are performed for the dead. Those who lived and died without receiving these saving ordinances have them done in their behalf vicariously.Members of the Church research their family history and perform these ordinances in an LDS temple. Those for whom the work is being done still live as spirits in the spirit world and can then accept or reject the ordinances and covenants.
LDS Temples are a sacred place where people learn about God’s plan of salvation, make covenants, and are blessed. One of these blessings is through receiving the garment, sacred underclothing.

When the Chilean Mission was organized in 1961, A. Delbert Palmer was its mission president.:99â100 Church leaders considered communism to be an “evil force” and area authority Theodore Tuttle encouraged Palmer to create a school to protect students from communism.:101 Local members requested schooling for their children, especially after some were expelled from Catholic schools for joining the LDS Church.:102 In 1963, Tuttle and Palmer started preparing two elementary schools in La Cisterna and Vina del Mar. They reported directly to the first presidency rather than to the CES board of education. Dale Harding’s position as superintendent was both a professional and religious position.:103 The schools opened in March 1964.:106
In 1970, the Church Board of Education approved the purchase of a Catholic school near Santiago.:117 Later that year, Salvador Allende, a Marxist, was elected as president, and Church members were uncertain about the future of the LDS Church and Church schools.:118 Middle-class citizens of various kinds opposed a National Unified School system. The minister of education requested using a church building for another session of schooling.:120 In response, Loosle increased enrollment to ensure that the schools were always operating at full capacity. Kindergartens operated in LDS chapels in Arica, Inquique, and La Calera to keep them from being used by the government for other purposes.:121 After Allende was overthrown, the kindergartens closed.:129

A Tiny Church In A Giant Empire
Church founder Joseph Smith sent apostle Orson Hyde in 1841 to what was then Palestine to dedicate the land for the gathering of all Abrahams children and the preaching of what they believed was the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.
It wasnt until 40 years later, though, that the church by then headquartered in the Beehive State began its efforts in earnest in what was once the Ottoman Empire, says James Toronto, a Brigham Young University professor of Arabic and Islamic studies who spent 12 years in the Middle East.
At that time, the empire included lands that today comprise Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, the West Bank/Gaza, Jordan and some populations on the Arabian Peninsula .
The Ottomans, an Islamic dynasty that reached the zenith of its power in the 16th century and made Constantinople its capital, had established an administrative system, Toronto writes in Out of Obscurity: The LDS Church in the 20th Century, that allowed religious minorities such as Christians and Jews a degree of autonomy so long as they did not threaten Ottoman political authority.
Such acceptance, as well the relative ease of traveling between different regions of the sprawling empire, provided an opening for a flood of Christian missionaries from other lands.
The first Latter-day Saint missionary efforts in the modern Middle East, Toronto says, were initiated in Turkey, the heartland of the Ottoman Empire.
Temples In The Scriptures
In addition to sacred places, the Lord also directed that sacred temples be constructed. The first temple structure found in the scriptures is the tabernacle. It was built by the Israelites under the direction of Moses. The tabernacle was a tent-like structure made with the finest materials available. It was where sacred priesthood ordinances could be performed during their time in the wilderness. It was also a constant reminder of the Lords love for them and His presence among them. It served as a kind of “portable temple” for generations .
The temple built by King Solomon is the first formal temple mentioned in the Old Testament . In addition, the Book of Mormon records that God’s people began building temples soon after they arrived in the new world and continued for nearly a thousand years. The people of Nephi built a temple similar to that of Solomon . King Benjamin gathered his people to the temple to teach and exhort them . And later, when the resurrected Savior visited the Nephites, He came to the temple .
The details varied, but the purposes of these temples remained consistentthey were places where the people sought to draw closer to the Lord, participate in sacred ceremonies, and deepen their commitment to follow Him.

Plans for 13 more temples and the renovation of the Provo Utah Temple were announced by President Russell M. Nelson on Sunday, Oct. 3, at the end of the 191st Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
President Nelson has now announced 83 new temples in the nearly four years he has served as president of the church.
Temples play a central role in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
They are used for the faiths highest and most sacred ordinances, such as marriage and making covenants with God to be more like Jesus Christ. Ordinances for the deceased are also performed in temples, including baptisms for the dead.
The Church of Jesus Christ now has 265 temples announced, under construction or in operation.
New temples are typically announced at the churchs general conferences, held semiannually in April and October.
The church closed all temples worldwide on March 25, 2020, to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Baptistry: Blessings For Ancestors
Jesus Christ demonstrated His commitment to obey all of Gods commandments when He was baptized. Jesus further taught that baptism is required to enter the kingdom of God. But what about people who die without being baptized? What hope do they have of returning to Gods presence? God has provided a way for them to also receive all His blessings.
In the temple, baptisms and other essential ordinances are performed by the living on behalf of those who have died without the opportunity. Such ordinances extend the saving grace of Jesus Christ to all people. This service for others is offered in loveand because Latter-day Saints believe that life continues after death, they also believe that those who have died are aware of the ordinances and can choose whether to accept them.
Through family history research, Latter-day Saints seek out their deceased ancestors and bring their names to the temple to perform ordinances on their behalf. Other ordinances such as receiving the endowment and being sealed as families are also performed in the temple on behalf of those who have died.

How The Planned Temple Came To Be

The chance to build a Latter-day Saint temple in an Islamic nation off-limits to any proselytizing was born of hard work, invaluable connections, being in the right place at the right time, and, to believers, guided by the hand of God.
Some of that is due to the efforts of Giovanni Criscione, who has belonged to the Utah-based faith since his mother joined in Sicily when he was 8.
Criscione had a peripatetic career in international relations, which took him back and forth across the Atlantic, while he built his reputation as a lawyer, professor, protocol manager, diplomatic consultant and public relations expert.
In 2003, he helped prepare for the open house of the Manhattan Temple, tapping friendships he had developed earlier at the U.N. Barely a year later, he was hired first to work with diplomats and other dignitaries in Rome at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then for the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics. For the next decade, he was employed by Milans Expo 2015, meeting with heads of state and VIPs like the late Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, and Laura Bush, wife of former President George W. Bush.
Then, in 2016, he was offered a job as the head of protocol for the 2020 World Expo in Dubai.
Criscione moved to Dubai in August 2016.
