A green tea latte is simply a latte made with green tea instead of espresso. Traditional lattes are a blend of steamed milk and espresso, but in a green tea latte, we remove the coffee and use tea in its place. You can use any type of green tea to make a latte, but the most common one these days is definitely a matcha latte.

Do you miss going out whenever you feel like it to get a special drink just because. Normally, I am the biggest homebody, so staying home really hasnt been too difficult.

But yesterday I had a mini melt down. Maybe its because everyone has been home with me for the past month, maybe its because Im frustrated that this hasnt gone away yet, or maybe its because I really do not like being told what to do. Whatever the case, I had a hard time being positive for a while.

Then my husband calmly asked the question, are you letting this happen to you or for you? Boom! That put me in my place pretty quick because when I stop to think about it, life here hasnt changed that much.

Sure our kids are doing online school and most of my husbands jobs have slowly cancelled as businesses cut costs. But as a food blogger/recipe developer my job is still ok. I am still able to continue creating delicious and fun recipes for others to enjoy making while they are home too.

So instead of continuing to wallow in self pity, I picked myself up and decided to make a homemade iced matcha latte to sip on as I planned out some other recipes to make this week.

    The Ingredients And Variations

The Matcha: Not all matcha green tea powder is made equally but there are tons of options out there. The lighter and brighter the green color, the better flavor, and quality matcha. Avoid any that is a dark murky green and brownish. Ive found that spending more DOES equal a better product. I tend to go for brands around $30 per tin.

The Milk: I love the creamy, frothy-ness of oat milk. However, you can use any of your favorite dairy-free milk options . Optionally, you could also use dairy milk.

The Sweetener: You can use a liquid sweetener of your choice . OR a granulated sugar Alternatively, feel free to use a sugar-free sweetener such as erythritol.

Ice: Use plain ice or brewed green tea ice cubes, for a different flavor and to reduce watering down the drink.

Optional: You can add in a creamer, to froth up like this Oat Milk Creamer or Cashew Cream. Plus, you could also add in a little vanilla extract.

Can You Put A Tea Bag In Cold Water

The math: She recommends using between one and two teaspoons of tea leaves for every cup of water and four to five teaspoons for a liter carafe or bottle. The same goes for making cold -brewed iced tea with tea bags. Putting one tea bag in a whole liter-sized pitcher of water and letting it sit overnight isnt enough.

Vegan Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte

Are you a coffee or a tea person? I’m personally a tea person and my husband prefers coffee. However, we are both obsessed with my Vegan Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte.

The matcha I use currently is Akira Organic, and I’m obsessed with it. I’ve tried many, and I really love this one.

Every morning I make myself either a cold or hot matcha drink, but I reach for the cold one much more often–even in winter–because I find the taste incredibly appealing. I’m also way too lazy to heat my plant milk.

As you will see in the video I included, when I take this to work in the morning I pour it straight into my Contigo Autoseal Leak Proof Travel Mug.

This post is not sponsored by Contigo, I just truly love their product. I have 2 of these mugs, haven given them as gifts at least a half dozen times, and — come on — they have 33,000 ratings on Amazon.

On the weekends I like to enjoy them in my fancy milkshake glass with a reusable straw. If that makes me a hipster than so be it.

Tips For The Perfect Iced Matcha Latte

DIY Starbucks Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte Recipe
    • Dont let your water boil. Boiling water can lead to bitter matcha. Take your water off the heat just before it starts boiling and give it 30-40 seconds to settle. The perfect water temperature is between 175 200.
    • Sift your matcha powder before adding water. This reduces clumping.
    • Use milk you would drink by itself. Unlike with strong coffee, you will really taste your milk with matcha. So make sure you love it.

Light, creamy and refreshing iced matcha latte made at home, in the blender in under a minute. This Starbucks copycat recipe taste just as good for a fraction of the price!

The milk and matcha powder is mixed in the blender to remove any lumps. This means you can double or triple the recipe and store the remaining Matcha in the fridge for the rest of the week. To use, simply pour into a cup of ice and enjoy!

The trick to making a good matcha latte is a good quality matcha powder. Matcha powder is one of those things that you should spend the few extra pennies and get the good brand because matcha varies in quality. Generally, the lighter the matcha the better quality. Stay away from matcha that looks olive or brownish.

    What is Matcha Powder?

Matcha is a type of powdered green tea that is mostly grown and produced in Japan. During the last few weeks of their growth, the tea leaves are shaded from the sun to increase their chlorophyll content and produce the vibrant green color. The leaves are then ground to produce a fine powder which is used in recipes for making teas, lattes, smoothies, and even ice-cream.

How Make A Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte At Home

Let me start by saying I LOVE the process of making matcha and some of these steps are not always necessary but I promise it’ll yield great results! Plus, the first few steps follow the traditional Japanese method for making matcha.

  • Using a tight mesh or wire strainer, sift the matcha powder into a bowl. You can totally skip this but it really helps to create a nice, smooth latte.
  • Add warm/hot, but not boiling, water to the bowl and whisk quickly in a “W” shape using a matcha whisk until the matcha powder has fully dissolved and a watery paste with many tiny bubbles on the surface has formed.
  • Add the maple syrup to the matcha and stir with the whisk until combined. Feel free to chill the matcha mixture in the fridge or freeze for 5-10 minutes, but since you’ll be pouring it over ice, you don’t have to.
  • To a glass, add as much ice as you’d like and add the non-dairy milks. Pour the matcha into the glass, add a dash of cinnamon, and stir with a spoon or straw to combine. Enjoy!!

    What Does Matcha Taste Like

The best way to describe how high quality matcha tastes is grassy and sweet. It has lovely vegetal high notes and a smooth mouth feel that is balanced out by a natural earthiness. A little bit bittersweet and floral, and very green in the best sense of the word!

The higher quality the matcha, the more balanced the flavor will be. Lower quality matcha powder may have an overpowering bitterness to it.

One of the biggest things to keep in mind, especially when making an ice matcha latte, is that youll have to be careful of clumps. Matcha clumps up naturally because of the static electricity and the super fine particle size.

Its an honest indicator of high quality, albeit not the only one. This effect is most prominent in an iced latte as the cold temperature keeps the powder from dissolving as well as hot water might.

Of course the clumps wont hurt you, its just not the preferred texture per se. Instead you can be sure to achieve a uniform matcha powder without clumps by choosing to sift your powder before preparing the iced matcha latte.

Its also worth double checking that youve selected a high quality latte matcha, such as our Barista Matcha options, specially crafted in Uji, Japan for daily drinking and lattes of all types.

    • You can also step it up a notch with super premium Ceremonial GradeMatcha, but is not required.
    • Choosing an authentic source and highest quality of matcha you can afford will ensure your iced matcha latte is the very best it can be.

Savory, sweet and all, without that bitterness from low-quality matcha hidden under the sweetener at your local chain cafe.

Types Of Milk For Matcha Lattes

For most lattes, you can use any type of milk or milk substitute for this recipe. I like to use whole milk because its fattier, but you can also use 2%, oat milk, almond milk, or whatever your preference. Make sure to chill it beforehand to keep the drink super icy.

Now, fill a glass with lots of ice, add the milk and top with your matcha mixture and stir. I like to sweeten my matcha latte with simple syrup by dissolving white sugar in hot water and chilling it in the fridge before mixing it into my latte.

    What Is Ceremonial Grade Matcha

Now, as with most things, there are differing qualities or grades when it comes to matcha tea.

    • Ceremonial Grade: The best of the three grades. It is said that the tea leaves in ceremonial grade matcha are stone ground. The powder is a bright, vibrant green and has the most complex flavor palate. My favorite brand is Matcha Bloom, which uses gyokuro leaves farmed in Japan, which require more care and attention than the commonly-used Tencha leaves. Use the code CAROC98 to get 10% off your first purchase at Matcha Bloom!
    • Premium Grade: This grade comprises much of what you might drink at a coffee shop or purchase at a tea shop and usually has a refined, somewhat grassy flavor to it. A good premium matcha can taste almost as good as ceremonial matcha.
    • Culinary / Ingredient Grade: As it sounds, this matcha is great for cooking. However, it can be a little too bitter when drinking. Use this green tea in recipes like this matcha roll cake or this matcha and dark chocolate bread pudding and youll be in great shape! This is sometimes also referred to as Cafe Grade matcha. Bonus: its usually the cheapest of the matcha grades.

Thats all well and good. But which one should I buy?

When I buy matcha or other forms of green tea, I always go with tea that was made in Japan. If you can find it, sticking with ceremonial and premium grades give you the most options when drinking and cooking. I always buy ceremonial grade tea when I can.
