This good cholesterol is associated with a lower risk for stroke and heart disease. However, chronic inflammation can impair the functioning of HDL cholesterol. But animal studies show that antioxidant and anti-inflammatory elderberry fruit extracts can counter HDL dysfunction linked to chronic inflammation and reduce the progression of atherosclerosis.LDL and HDL Cholesterol: Bad and Good Cholesterol. Different cultivars of elderberries are planted for various purposes, particularly to use the sweet elderflowers to create wines and cordials. It is a pleasant addition to blends with a sumptuous flavor and elegant tannin structure.
Colloquially, there are many references to the elder plant dating back thousands of years. The bible makes several references to the berry, and Hans Christian Andersen mentions the tea in many fairy tales. Elderberry Tea: What You Need To Know

The elder bush grows to be several feet high and is covered in dark berries referred to as elderberries. The elderberries can be processed to make jams, jellies and other products that eaten by people all over the world. But when herbal supplement makers create elderberry tea, they take special care to process the berries in such a way as to retain their natural healing properties. All elderberry products are extremely popular, but the tea may be making medical history as time goes by.
Some people try to bypass the tea and eat elderberries directly from the bush. While eating the actual berries is not a problem, it should be noted that the leaves and stems on the bush are poisonous to human beings and other animals as well. That is one of the reasons why people prefer to eat processed berry products. Elderberry tea uses only the berries and avoids all of the potentially toxic parts of the plant. When drank on a regular basis, this tea can have some significant benefits that mainstream medical science is starting to take notice of.

On a related note, with Echinacea, a taste disturbance was noted.
Even if the mothers are safe, its unknown if the baby inside is. As with almost all dietary supplements there isnt enough data to know for sure what effect these things have, whether positive, negative, or neutral.
Whether youre pregnant or not, be extremely careful with premade teas. Many have a laundry list of different herbs and spices which arent listed on the front of the box. If you dont read the ingredients label, you wont really know whats inside. This brand in the United Kingdom, Pukka, is a good example of that.

What Is The History Of Elderberries
Sites in Switzerland and Italy tell us that the black elderberry variety could have been the first elderberry to have been cultivated and, that too, by prehistoric man.
In fact, Hippocrates, the ancient Greek who is known as the Father of Medicine, described the elderberry plant as his medicine chest. The fruit is native to Europe and North America. The berries have a long history of being used in folk medicine and are being researched for more than two decades for their medicinal benefits.
There is a reason they are being researched thanks to their varied nutritional profile.
Can Elderberries Be Dangerous
Uncooked elderberries and the plants bark, leaves, and roots can be toxic. These parts of the plant contain lectins, a kind of protein that can cause stomach upset. Under some circumstances, they even contain bitter elements that can produce cyanide.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, eight people were hospitalized in 1983 after consuming homemade elderberry juice. An investigation revealed the juice had been made by crushing raw elderberries, leaves, and stems in a juice press. Those who consumed the most elderberry juice became the sickest.
Its important to note that most accounts of elderberry poisoning were due to raw consumption and poorly executed homemade recipes. Elderberry tablets, teas, and other products you see in pharmacies and on supermarket shelves are likely nontoxic.
As a precaution, always discuss any type of nutritional supplement with your doctor before modifying your diet.
