Proper Use Of The Church Logo

New Church Symbol Emphasizes the Centrality of the Savior

Ever wonder about whether it is permissible to use the Church logo on your ward newsletter or Sunday program? How about a flyer for your ward Christmas party? The answer to both of these questions is no. This article addresses the proper use and display of the name of the Church and the official Church logotype.

Name of the Church

The of the Church may be used by wards, stakes, branches, and districts according to the following guidelines:

1. Always name the event and its sponsor as a prelude to the name of the Church. Examples:

  • On a program: Sacrament Meeting Program of the Canyon First Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
  • On a poster: Picnic sponsored by the Canyon First Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

2. The typeface of the name of the Church should not try to imitate or resemble the official Church logo.

Church Logo

The Church logo is registered as a trademark or otherwise legally-protected identifier of the Church worldwide. The logo should only be used on Church stationery, missionary name tags, and items published by Church headquarters. Individuals and Church units are not authorized to use the logo on anything they create.

Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter

A new symbol was introduced by the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and urged people to join in a fast to end the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Russell M. Nelson said the new symbol will help continue the effort to focus on the Churchs name.

Nelson announced the new symbol during the Saturday evening session of the churchs General Conference.

portrays the resurrected, living Lord reaching out to embrace all who will come unto Him, President Nelson said. This symbol should feel familiar to many, as we have long identified the restored gospel with the living, resurrected Christ.

The new symbol will be used on official literature, news and events of the Church Nelson said. It will remind all that this is the Saviors Church and that all we do, as members of His Church, centers on Jesus Christ and His gospel.

Nelson also encouraged members and those from around the world to fast on Good Friday, April 10 to help resolve the COVID-19 pandemic. He encouraged people to fast for two meals or 24-hours.

The church has more than 16 million members worldwide.

During his historically rich general conference message Saturday evening, President Russell M. Nelson introduced a new Church symbol that signals the central place of Jesus Christ in His Church.

Aptly, the symbol includes the name of the ChurchThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saintscontained within a cornerstone. As taught since Biblical days, Jesus Christ is the chief corner stone of His Church .

At the center of the symbol is a representation of Thorvaldsens marble statue the Christus, said President Nelson. It portrays the resurrected, living Lord reaching out to embrace all who will come unto Him.

Symbolically, Jesus Christ is standing under an arch. The arch reminds us of the resurrected Savior emerging from the tomb on the third day following His Crucifixion.

I renew that promise today.

In the Saturday Evening session of the 190th Annual General Conference, President Russell M. Nelson revealed a new symbol to help represent the focus of Jesus Christ at the center of the Church.

This new emblem emphasizes the name of Jesus Christ and His central role in all the Church does. The name of the Church is contained within a rectangular shape that represents a cornerstone. This idea has biblical roots. The Apostle Paul, employing a construction metaphor in a letter to the first century Saints in Ephesus, wrote that the Church is built upon the foundation of apostles and prophetsJesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone. The center of the symbol is a representation of Thorvaldsens marble statue, the Christus. Jesus stands under an arch as a reminder of His emergence from the tomb three days after His death.

Activity Rates And Disaffiliation

The LDS Church does not release official statistics on church activity, but it is likely that only approximately 40 percent of its recorded membership in the United States and 30 percent worldwide regularly attend weekly Sunday worship services. A statistical analysis of the 2014 Pew Religious Landscape Survey assessed that “about one-third of those with a Latter-day Saint background… left the Church”, identifying as disaffiliated. Activity rates vary with age, and disengagement occurs most frequently between age 16 and 25. Young single adults are more likely to become inactive than their married counterparts, and overall, women tend to be more active than men.

Church humanitarian aid includes organizing food security, clean water, mobility, and healthcare initiatives, operating thrift stores, maintaining a service project website, and directly funding or partnering with other organizations. The church reports that the value of all donations in 2021 was $906 million. Independent reporting has found that the Church’s charity organization, LDS Charities, gave a total of $177 million from 2008 to 2020.

Restorationism And Prophetic Leadership

The LDS Church teaches that, subsequent to the death of Jesus and his original apostles, his church, along with the authority to act in Jesus Christ’s name and the church’s attendant spiritual gifts, were lost, due to a combination of external persecutions and internal heresies. The restorationas represented by the church began by Joseph Smithrefers to a return of the authentic priesthood power, spiritual gifts, ordinances, living prophets and revelation of the primitive Church of Christ. This restoration is associated with a number of events which are understood to have been necessary to re-establish the early Christian church found in the New Testament, and to prepare the earth for the Second Coming of Jesus. In particular, Latter-day Saints believe that angels appeared to Joseph Smith and a limited number of his associates, and bestowed various priesthood authorities on them.

Criticism Of Joseph Smith

In the 1830s, the church was criticized for Smith’s handling of a banking failure in Kirtland, Ohio. After the Mormons migrated west, there was fear and suspicion about the LDS Church’s political and military power in Missouri, culminating in the 1838 Mormon War and the Mormon Extermination Order by Governor Lilburn Boggs. In the 1840s, criticism of the church included its theocratic aspirations in Nauvoo, Illinois. Criticism of the practice of plural marriage and other doctrines taught by Smith were published in the Nauvoo Expositor. Opposition led to a series of events culminating in the death of Smith and his brother while jailed in 1844.

Tithing And Other Donations

Church members are expected to donate one-tenth of their income to support the operations of the church, including construction of temples, meetinghouses, and other buildings, and other church uses. Members are also encouraged to abstain from food and drink on the first Sunday of each month for at least two consecutive meals. They donate at least the cost of the two skipped meals as a fast offering, which the church uses to assist the poor and needy and expand its humanitarian efforts.

All able LDS young men are expected to serve a two-year, full-time proselytizing mission. Missionaries do not choose where they serve or the language in which they will proselytize, and are expected to fund their missions themselves or with the aid of their families. Prospective male missionaries must be at least 18 years old and no older than 25, not yet married, have completed secondary school, and meet certain criteria for physical fitness and spiritual worthiness. Missionary service is not compulsory, nor is it required for young men to retain their church membership.

Unmarried women 19 years and older may also serve as missionaries, generally for a term of 18 months. However, the LDS Church emphasizes that women are not under the same expectation to serve as male members are, and may serve solely as a personal decision. There is no maximum age for missionary service for women.

Bearing Our Burdens with Hope

As President Nelson began introducing the Churchs new symbol, it gave me a little designer anxiety. Mainly because he introduced the first of multiple concepts infused into the symbol, the first being Christ as the Cornerstone.

I thought, Please tell me theres more I wouldnt consider this any sort of progression in terms of the churchs visual identity.

Then he introduced the full symbol. My heart felt relieved to see more thought went into a logo for the church than a mere rectangle around 3 lines of justified text.

Let me clarify though, President Nelson did not call it a logo. And thats the truth, its not a logo in modern terms. It is a symbol. That doesnt detract from its usefulness though.

A notea logo only has the meaning we prescribe it. In that vein, I want to walk you through an analysis of the symbol which hopefully will give it more meaning for you.

Purported Pagan Origins Of The Trinity

Life In Nauvoo Illinois

Many American newspapers criticized Missouri for the Haun’s Mill massacre and the state’s expulsion of the Latter Day Saints. Illinois accepted Mormon refugees who gathered along the banks of the Mississippi River, where Smith purchased high-priced, swampy woodland in the hamlet of . Smith also attempted to portray the Latter Day Saints as an oppressed minority, and unsuccessfully petitioned the for help in obtaining reparations. During the summer of 1839, while Latter Day Saints in suffered from a epidemic, Smith sent Brigham Young and other apostles to missions in Europe, where they made numerous converts, many of them poor factory workers.

Smith also attracted a few wealthy and influential converts, including , the Illinois . Bennett used his connections in the Illinois legislature to obtain an unusually liberal charter for the new city, which Smith renamed “Nauvoo” . The charter granted the city virtual autonomy, authorized a university, and granted Nauvoo powerwhich allowed Smith to fend off extradition to Missouri. Though Mormon authorities controlled Nauvoo’s civil government, the city guaranteed for its residents. The charter also authorized the , a militia whose actions were limited only by state and federal constitutions. Smith and Bennett became its commanders, and were styled and respectively. As such, they controlled by far the largest body of armed men in Illinois. Smith made Bennett of the church, and Bennett was elected Nauvoo’s first mayor.

Its A Symbolnot A Logo

Eight months into his tenure as President of the Church, President Nelson issued a statement in August 2018 regarding the name of the Church.

The Lord has impressed upon my mind the importance of the name He has revealed for His Church, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he wrote. We have work before us to bring ourselves in harmony with His will.

During the , President Nelson stressed, It is not a name change. It is not rebranding. It is not cosmetic. It is not a whim. And it is not inconsequential. Instead, it is a correction. It is the command of the Lord.

There are many worldly arguments against restoring the correct name of the Church, he continued, including digital needs and search engine optimization. But this is the Lords Church.

If this were a discussion about branding a man-made organization, those arguments might prevail, President Nelson said. But in this crucial matter, we look to Him whose Church this is and acknowledge that the Lords ways are not, and never will be, mans ways.

The new symbol is part of President Nelsons emphasis on the name of the Church and is not a rebranding effort, the Intellectual Property Division reaffirmed. Its about correct communication.

Smith’s teachings were rooted in . He taught that the Church of Christ restored through him was a restoration of the early Christian faith, which had been lost in the . At first, Smith’s church had little sense of hierarchy his religious authority was derived from visions and revelations. Though Smith did not claim exclusive prophethood, an early revelation designated him as the only prophet allowed to issue commandments “as Moses”.
