Gethsemane And Crucifixion In The Ensign

The Other Prodigal Son

Using the same methodology described for the Millennial Star and the Improvement Era, we searched the Ensign magazine between 1971 and 2020 for artistic images of Gethsemane and the Crucifixion. The Ensign began in January 1971 as the official English magazine for adults of the Church, subsuming and replacing other Church periodicals such as the Millennial Star and Improvement Era . At the end of 2020, the Ensign was discontinued, replaced by the worldwide Liahona magazine. In comparison to the Star and Era, the Ensign historically made greater use of visual imagery to accompany the printed word. We identified 100 total representations of Christs Crucifixion in the Ensign. Of those 100, 53 were smaller than a quarter page, 24 were a quarter page up to just under a half page, 9 were between half a page and just smaller than three-quarters of a page, and 14 were three-quarters of a page or larger.

In comparison, we found 215 total representations of Christ in Gethsemane in the Ensign. Of those 215, 131 were smaller than a quarter page, 39 were a quarter page to just under a half page, 13 were a half page to just smaller than three-quarters of a page, and 32 were three-quarters of a page or larger. These data are summarized in table 2.37

King Benjamin’s Testimony by Charles Muldowney

Before he died, King Benjamin bore his testimony at the coronation of his son Mosiah. Based on the details of Mosiah chapter 1 through 6, it is likely this occurred at the Sukkot celebration which was the customary time of a coronation. The theme of Sukkot is deliverance. King Benjamin took this opportunity to teach his people about the ultimate deliverance from sin through the infinite sacrifice of Jesus Christ. This painting represents King Benjamin on the migdol bearing his last testimony to his people .

As a student attending the Philadelphia College of Art, the artist studied painting and printmaking and received a BFA in painting. In graduate school at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he continued his studies in painting and printmaking and was awarded an MFA in painting. His work is representational. He largely does religious narrative and landscape painting and printmaking. His work has won awards and has been exhibited in the United States, Canada, and Europe. His paintings and prints are in private and public collections in the United States and Canada.

Atonement Images In The Millennial Star Improvement Era And Ensign

In this section, we examine how Christs suffering in Gethsemane and his Crucifixion on Calvary were portrayed in three major magazines for adult Church members: the Millennial Star , the Improvement Era , and the Ensign . We included images of Christ praying or suffering in Gethsemane but excluded images of olive trees or the betrayal of Christ . We also excluded any documentary or location photographs that were not considered artistic expressions. We included any representation of Christ hanging on, being nailed to, or being taken down from the cross, and any representation with Christ on the cross in the background. We excluded any implicit or imminent Crucifixion representations including the crown of thorns on Christ, Christ carrying his cross, his trial before Pilate and scourging, the Christus statue , and any images of Golgotha without Christ represented.

The Morning Breaks by Rose Datoc Dal

“The Morning Breaks” captures a moment on that fateful spring morning in 1820, just before Joseph Smith kneels down to offer his prayer to ask God which church he should join. The moment is pregnant with anticipation, a breath before the storm, as it were. He stops in a clearing at a stump where had stuck axe the day before. What follows is the First Vision, where the heavens open and Joseph sees God the Father and Jehovah, which theophany inaugurates the Restoration & last dispensation.

The title, The Morning Breaks, is both literal and symbolic: the First Vision literally took place on a beautiful clear morning it is symbolic of the dawn of the Restoration itself. The title makes direct reference to the triumphant LDS hymn by the same name, about the coming forth of Zion The morning breaks, the shadows flee Lo Zions standard is unfurled! .

He The Physician, I The Nurse by Megan Rieker

Amanda Smith is a wonderful example of faith in the midst of trial. On October 30th, 1838, at a Mormon settlement in Hauns Mill, a mob armed with guns attacked the saints. After the mob left, Amanda B. Smith found that many of her family had been killed, but little Alma had survived a gunshot wound that had blown away his hip. Amanda received guidance after prayer and made a poultice that began to build up the bone.

Prayer was our only source of comfort, our Heavenly Father our only helper. None but he could save and deliver us.

After only five weeks Alma Smith arose from his bed, entirely recovereda flexible gristle having grown in place of the missing joint and socket.

The Mormon Miracle became quite well known in the area. A team of doctors came to examine the boy and hear the story. They asked Amanda who performed such amazing surgery. She replied, Jesus Christ. One said, Not the Savior of the World? Amanda responded, Yes, the same sir. He was the physician and I was the nurse.

First Place Book Of Mormon

The Dream by Ryan Muldowney

In Lehi’s dream, the prophet wanders aimlessly in a dark and dreary waste with growing anxiety. He prays to God for mercy and immediately the Lord allows him to escape from the darkness. I love that moment of emergence, Lehi’s certain relief at deliverance, that curiosity with his new surroundings, and above all his desire to taste of this mysterious fruit which he had never before encountered. I wanted to capture something of that in-between-worlds moment. The moment between sleeping and waking, between dream and reality, between light and dark, between anxiety and relief, between wandering and true conversion.

Artistic Depictions Of The Book Of Mormon Translation

Pin by Joyce Hunter on Temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter ...

Summary: People are sometimes troubled when they see artists’ depictions of the Prophet and Oliver sitting at a table while Joseph views the plates as they sit in plain sight. Obviously, the plates often didn’t sit in plain view, and these artistic interpretations originate purely in the mind of the artist. Some accounts indicate that the plates sat on a table covered with a cloth “in plain view,” with Emma indicating that she actually moved them around in order to perform her household chores.

The Translation Was Carried Out Openlyjoseph Had No Opportunity To Hide Notes Or Books

What religious message does the Del Parson translation picture convey?

  • The translation was carried out openlyJoseph had no opportunity to hide notes or books. This was confirmed by Elizabeth Ann Cowdery and Emma Smith.
  • The plates had a physical reality, and Oliver Cowdery was convinced of this reality. Unlike some of the other Three Witnesses, who spoke only of seeing the angel and the plates, Oliver Cowdery insisted that “I beheld with my eyes and handled with my hands the gold plates from which it was translated. I also beheld the Interpreters. That book is trueI wrote it myself as it fell from the lips of the Prophet.” Oliver is also quoted in one account as describing Joseph “as sitting at a table with the plates before him, translating them by means of the Urim and Thummim, while he sat beside him writing every word as Joseph spoke them to him. This was done by holding the “translators” over the hieroglyphics…” This alternative technique was confirmed by John Whitmer, who said of Oliver that “hen the work of translation was going on he sat at one table with his writing material and Joseph at another with the breast-plate and Urim and Thummim. The later were attached to the breast-plate and were two crystals or glasses, into which he looked and saw the words of the book.”
  • The translation was not a weird, esoteric exercise.
  • Neal A Maxwell: To Neglect Substance While Focusing On Process Is Another Form Of Unsubmissively Looking Beyond The Mark

Elder Neal A. Maxwell went so far as to use Joseph’s hat as a parable this is hardly the act of someone trying to “hide the truth”:

Jacob censured the “stiffnecked” Jews for “looking beyond the mark” . We are looking beyond the mark today, for example, if we are more interested in the physical dimensions of the cross than in what Jesus achieved thereon or when we neglect Alma’s words on faith because we are too fascinated by the light-shielding hat reportedly used by Joseph Smith during some of the translating of the Book of Mormon. To neglect substance while focusing on process is another form of unsubmissively looking beyond the mark.

Those who criticize the Church based on its artwork should perhaps take Elder Maxwell’s caution to heart.

As The Critics Point Out There Are Potential Historical Errors In Some Of These Images

See also: Does Church art hide the presence of Joseph’s siblings at Moroni’s visit?

One of the strangest attacks on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is an assault on the Church’s art. Now and again, one hears criticism about the representational images which the Church uses in lesson manuals and magazines to illustrate some of the foundational events of Church history.

A common complaint is that Church materials usually show Joseph translating the Book of Mormon by looking at the golden plates, such as in the photo shown here.

Here critics charge a clear case of duplicityOliver Cowdery and Joseph Smith are shown translating the Book of Mormon.

But as the critics point out, there are potential historical errors in this image:

  • Oliver Cowdery did not see the plates as Joseph worked with them.
  • For much of the translation of the extant Book of Mormon text, Joseph did not have the plates in front of himthey were often hidden outside the home during the translation.
  • Joseph used a seer stone to translate the plates he usually did this by placing the stone in his hat to exclude light, and dictating to his scribe.
  • The reality is that the translation process, for the most part, is represented by this image:

All Art Including Church Art Simply Reflects The Views Of The Artist: It May Not Reflect Reality

It is claimed by some that the Church knowingly “lies” or distorts the historical record in its artwork in order to whitewash the past, or for propaganda purposes. For example, some Church sanctioned artwork shows Joseph and Oliver sitting at a table while translating with the plate in the open between them. Daniel C. Peterson provides some examples of how Church art often does not reflect reality, and how this is not evidence of deliberate lying or distortion on the part of the Church:

Look at this famous picture….Now thats Samuel the Lamanite on a Nephite wall. Are any walls like that described in the Book of Mormon? No. You have these simple things, and theyre considered quite a technical innovation at the time of Moroni, where he digs a trench, piles the mud up, puts a palisade of logs along the top. Thats it. Theyre pretty low tech. Theres nothing like this. This is Cuzco or something. But this is hundreds of years after the Book of Mormon and probably nowhere near the Book of Mormon area, and, you know, and youve heard me say it before, after Samuel jumps off this Nephite wall you never hear about him again. The obvious reason is….hes dead. He couldnt survive that jump. But again, do you draw your understanding of the Book of Mormon from that image? Or, do you draw it from what the book actually says?
