Youll use a black tea concentrate in this recipe, but just in case you want to make it from scratch, here are the five spices that make-up chai.

1. Green Cardamom. This floral-scented spice gives a smoky and earthy flavor to the tea. Green cardamom is a must-have for making chai. Do not skip this one out! Get whole pods instead of seeds for better flavor. Crack them before steeping the tea.

2. Cloves. Unlike green cardamom, this one is optional. Its highly recommended, though! Its flavor blends really well with sweet cinnamon and spicy black pepper. Its also super fragrant.

3. Cinnamon Stick. This ones another non-negotiable. Its sweetness counteracts the earthiness of the cardamom and the spiciness of the pepper.

4. Fresh Ginger. Its mild spice is responsible for that soothing sensation you feel on the back of your throat as you drink the tea.

5. Black Peppercorns. It may sound strange adding this to a drink, but its another must-have! It gives the drink that subtle kick of spice that makes it cozy and warm.

How Is Chai Tea Latte Made

We prepare a chai latte by mixing black tea infused with spices with steamed milk. Usually, the drink has foam on top of it. The spices used vary from one tea shop to another.

However, some cafes create their signature chai latte blends, and their ingredients are always secret. Other shops, however, use a sweetened chai latte powder or syrup, which allows them to brew the beverage on demand quickly.

When a customer orders a chai latte, some baristas use an “elixir,” which extracts all the spices used in black tea, water, and sugar. It’s a bit different from the standard way of making chai latte tea.

The baristas heat the elixir, then serve customers their preferred milk and foam it up like a regular latte. After pouring the milk and adding the foam, the drink is completed by adding some cinnamon powder and finishing it off with star anise.

Although the foam and warm milk proportions stay the same, the chai latte isn’t a “real” latte. And that’s because it contains no espresso.

Other baristas or cafes freshly steep their chai latte for each cup. They then add homemade vanilla syrup, including the customer’s preferred milk.

Is Chai Latte Healthier Than Coffee

Chai lattes are definitely healthier than coffee.

They have significantly less caffeine, and they also have a lot of added health benefits from the spices used in making them.

For example, chai lattes contain cardamom, which is great for improving digestion and helping to ease stomach upset.

They also contain ginger, which is excellent for fighting nausea and morning sickness, as well as reducing inflammation throughout the body.

Finally, chai lattes also contain cloves, which are known for their antibacterial properties and can help to fight off infection.

Ginger Root: An Ingredient Used

Ginger Root is a spice that requires little introduction. Unlike countless other spices of Asian origin, this particular herb of the Zingiberaceae family has been familiar to the west for at least 2,000 years.

Nowadays, we use ginger in a wide variety of household and commercial foods, including, of course, Chai Tea. It has refined tangy notes which often stand out in any recipe.

Traditional Ayurvedic texts refer to Ginger Root Tea as a remedy for many ailments prevalent in ancient Indian society. Like cardamom, it is a tridoshic.

Still, most commonly, this herb works with the Pitta dosha in aiding digestion. The same indeed applies to its modern-day use, with scientists recognising its ability to reduce intestinal gas, flatulence and bloating.

Whats The Difference Between Chai Tea And A Chai Tea Latte

Iced Chai Tea Latte

Spoiler alert: theyre not the same. Many American cafes use the names interchangeably, but theyre not one in the same. Their differences lie in taste and preparation. Chai tea lattes are a whole lot sweeter than a traditional chai tea .

A chai tea latte usually contains added sugar and, depending on how you make it, can include a cream or sweetener and non-traditional spices that give it its super sweet taste. To top it all off , chai tea lattes are typically served with a dollop of whipped cream, the way my mom did when I was a kid.

Traditional chai, on the other hand, relies on its traditional spices, milk and sugar to give it its flavor. As far as preparation goes, chai is typically brewed with warm milk whereas chai tea lattes are prepared with frothed milk, like a traditional cafe latte.

How To Make A Chai Latte

I fell in love with the idea of chai through the cartons of this drink mix from the grocery store. The milky sweetness partnered with the astringent black tea drew me in, but the warm spices that lingered between sips kept me drinking. It wasnt long before the sweetness of those chai drink mixes became too much for me and I started experimenting with chai lattes at home.

This chai latte gives you complete control over your chai latte experience, from the tea and the spices, to the sweetener and type of milk. The result is a creamy cup of black tea subtly spiced and fragrant with cinnamon, black pepper, and ginger, and just the right amount of sweetness, so near perfect that youll skip the coffee shop chai and come home to make a pot of this at tea time.

What To Do If You Don’t Own A Milk Frother

In order to give this latte a thick, creamy layer of foam on top, I use a milk frother. It may seem like an unnecessary kitchen appliance to own, but if you make lattes often, I promise it will change your life.

That being said, if you don’t own one and don’t plan on buying one, a good alternative is to use a mason jar. Pour the milk into a large jar, shake it vigorously, and then microwave for 30-60 seconds. The foam won’t be quite as fine and velvety as what you get with a frother, but still SO much better than regular steamed milk.

What Is Chai Exactly

While we commonly know chai as a flavor of tea, it actually translates to the word tea in Hindi. The idea of a milky tea is common in the United Kingdom, and after the British colonization of India, it wasnt too long before Indians made their own version of a sweet and milky black tea, with the addition of spices. And that my friends is where Masala Chai was born!

What Makes This Recipe So Good

How to make the Perfect Chai Tea Latte – Twinings Foodservice

I created this recipe in 2014. I had a costly obsession with a Starbucks chai latte. In an effort to lower expenses, I decided to experiment with making a chai latte at home.

I found a few home chai lattes online, all of which suggested using a pre-made chai tea mix. I tried this option, but they all lacked the coffee shop flavor.

I decided to make my own chai spice blend, using ingredients from my pantry, and pairing this blend with black tea. After researching the spices used to make traditional chai, and seeing what was stocked in my pantry, I decided to go with the following spices

  • Ginger: Used in stir-fry sauce, homemade granola, and delicious in smoothies.
  • Cardamom: Delicious in homemade granola, muffins , and quick breads. Fun fact: also commonly used as a supplement due to its health benefits: anti-inflammatory.
  • Nutmeg: Used to make banana bread, pumpkin spice latte, and many other baked goods.
  • Whole Cloves: Something I dont use very often. In the fall, add to boiling water to make your house smell amazing. If you dont have whole cloves, 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves will also work.
  • Allspice: Has the flavor of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg all combined into one great for baking.

Use Teavana Chai Concentrate

Starbucks claims that this is the chai concentrate that they use. Due to this, if you are looking to recreate the same flavors that are in your Starbucks chai latte, then this is a good place to start.

You should know that the concentrate is still not as strong as what is used in the store. As such, you will need to double up on how much you use with this concentrate as well.

Chai Tea Latte Starbucks Recipe

I love a good chai tea latte recipe, Starbucks style. Were going to learn whats in a Starbucks Chai Tea Latte and how to craft your own using by using Tazo chai tea bags, oat milk and maple syrup or honey! Of course you can use any chai tea, but the Tazo contains the same spices as the Starbucks concentrate.

The only thing I dislike about most Starbucks lattes is their sweetness level. So I like making them at home so can make them more to my taste. Its also more afforable to make at home.

Best Black Tea For Chai Latte

Since the base of chai is black tea, its best to use a strong and robust type such as Assam or Darjeeling. As for tea bags vs. tea leaves either one will work! Im using tea bags for this specific recipe out of convenience, because thats what I normally have on hand.

But in general, loose leaf teas will produce a much more full-bodied tea. Just be sure to look for smaller leaves that are partially broken. Theyll infuse much easier when simmering in the pot.

Does Chai Have Caffeine

Chai lattes that are made with black tea do have some caffeine. In this particular recipe, you can make it with or without the tea either way it will taste great!

I personally dont have the patience to wait for tea to brew, and then make a latte out of it, so this recipe gets its flavor from an easy combination of spices instead. If you make it without the tea, its a caffeine-free drink.
