We prepare a chai latte by mixing black tea infused with spices with steamed milk. Usually, the drink has foam on top of it. The spices used vary from one tea shop to another.
However, some cafes create their signature chai latte blends, and their ingredients are always secret. Other shops, however, use a sweetened chai latte powder or syrup, which allows them to brew the beverage on demand quickly.

I fell in love with the idea of chai through the cartons of this drink mix from the grocery store. The milky sweetness partnered with the astringent black tea drew me in, but the warm spices that lingered between sips kept me drinking. It wasnt long before the sweetness of those chai drink mixes became too much for me and I started experimenting with chai lattes at home.
This chai latte gives you complete control over your chai latte experience, from the tea and the spices, to the sweetener and type of milk. The result is a creamy cup of black tea subtly spiced and fragrant with cinnamon, black pepper, and ginger, and just the right amount of sweetness, so near perfect that youll skip the coffee shop chai and come home to make a pot of this at tea time.
What To Do If You Don’t Own A Milk Frother
In order to give this latte a thick, creamy layer of foam on top, I use a milk frother. It may seem like an unnecessary kitchen appliance to own, but if you make lattes often, I promise it will change your life.
That being said, if you don’t own one and don’t plan on buying one, a good alternative is to use a mason jar. Pour the milk into a large jar, shake it vigorously, and then microwave for 30-60 seconds. The foam won’t be quite as fine and velvety as what you get with a frother, but still SO much better than regular steamed milk.

What Makes This Recipe So Good
I created this recipe in 2014. I had a costly obsession with a Starbucks chai latte. In an effort to lower expenses, I decided to experiment with making a chai latte at home.
I found a few home chai lattes online, all of which suggested using a pre-made chai tea mix. I tried this option, but they all lacked the coffee shop flavor.
I decided to make my own chai spice blend, using ingredients from my pantry, and pairing this blend with black tea. After researching the spices used to make traditional chai, and seeing what was stocked in my pantry, I decided to go with the following spices
- Ginger: Used in stir-fry sauce, homemade granola, and delicious in smoothies.
- Cardamom: Delicious in homemade granola, muffins , and quick breads. Fun fact: also commonly used as a supplement due to its health benefits: anti-inflammatory.
- Nutmeg: Used to make banana bread, pumpkin spice latte, and many other baked goods.
- Whole Cloves: Something I dont use very often. In the fall, add to boiling water to make your house smell amazing. If you dont have whole cloves, 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves will also work.
- Allspice: Has the flavor of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg all combined into one great for baking.

Use Teavana Chai Concentrate
Starbucks claims that this is the chai concentrate that they use. Due to this, if you are looking to recreate the same flavors that are in your Starbucks chai latte, then this is a good place to start.
You should know that the concentrate is still not as strong as what is used in the store. As such, you will need to double up on how much you use with this concentrate as well.

I love a good chai tea latte recipe, Starbucks style. Since the base of chai is black tea, its best to use a strong and robust type such as Assam or Darjeeling. As for tea bags vs. tea leaves either one will work! Im using tea bags for this specific recipe out of convenience, because thats what I normally have on hand.
But in general, loose leaf teas will produce a much more full-bodied tea. Just be sure to look for smaller leaves that are partially broken. Theyll infuse much easier when simmering in the pot.
