Long Island Iced Tea Variations

Making variations of the classic Tea is almost as much fun as drinking one. These are some of the best-known variations plus one of my own.

  • Long Beach Tea: Replace the cola with cranberry juice very refreshing and eye catching with a beautiful pink colour.
  • Hawaian Iced Tea: Replace the cola with pineapple juice.
  • Texas Tea: Add another spirit into the mix bourbon! Needless to say this IS stronger than the original.
  • Hipster Iced Tea: This is what my husband and I call our version which replaces some of the spirits with more trendy equivalents. A mix of Pisco, Mescal, Grand Marnier, Gold Rum and whatever else is lurking in the back of our drinks cabinet

The traditional way is to add all the ingredients apart from the Cola into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake for 30 seconds and strain into a highball glass filled with ice. Top with the coke , stir and garnish with lime or lemon slices.

I prefer to simply pour all the spirits into a glass filled with ice, stir and top with coke. If you want to dilute the spirits more then use the shaken not stirred method.

How To Make The Long Island Iced Tea Cocktail

Pre-step

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice and get a measuring glass and your glassware. I chose a flared tall glass and a Tom Collins glass. Cut two lemon wedges.

After you measure out the ingredients, pour into cocktail shaker.

Step one

Gather the ingredients tequila, gin, gold rum, vodka, triple sec, lemon, simple syrup and Coca-Cola.

Step two

Measure 2 ounces tequila.

Step three

Measure 2 ounces gin.

Step four

Measure 2 ounces gold rum.

Step five

Measure 2 ounces vodka.

Step six

Measure 2 ounces lemon juice.

Step seven

Measure 1 ounce triple sec.

Step eight

Measure 1 ounce simple syrup. I didnt take a photo of it for some reason. Maybe all the booze got to my head even though I hadnt drunk any yet.

Step nine

Add more ice to the two glasses, cap the shaker, shake for 15 seconds and divide between the two glasses. Get the Cola and lemon wedges.

Step ten

Fill the glass up with the Coca Cola, which usually equates 1 1.5 ounces per drink.

Squeeze the juice out of each lemon wedge into the cocktails. One per drink.

Lets look at the vertical view.

Remember, that this is a dangerous drink because, if well blended, it does taste like iced tea, so you wont feel how strong it is going down!

How Strong Is Long Island Iced Tea

The five liquors make Long Island iced tea seem like a strong drink, but if you do the math, its not terribly potent compared to other cocktails. When you pour 80-proof liquors, 60-proof triple sec, and top it with 2 ounces of soda, its alcohol content falls in the 16 percent ABV range. That is about the same as a strong rum and Coke and half the strength of a gin martini.

Why Do Bartenders Hate Making Long Island Iced Teas

If theres one thing any bartender hates, its dealing with customers who order complicated drinks at peak hours. Mixologist Elena Alvarez recalled in an interview with Business Insider that, really difficult drinks with a lot of ingredients are always annoying to make when things are really busy. Given the plethora of bottles necessary to make a proper Long Island, its a time consuming cocktail to prepare, hence the hassle for bartenders everywhere.

The History Of The Long Island Iced Tea

Rum And Coke Long Island Iced Tea Highball Monin, Inc. Black Russian ...

When it comes to tracing the history of the infamous cocktail, piecing together its past proves to be just as difficult as piecing together memories of your night if you indulge in more than just one.

The first variation of what we now know as the Long Island Iced Tea cropped up in the 1920s, when the United States was deep in the prohibition era. At the time, many resourceful Americans at the time tried their hands at crafting their own cocktails, and Old Man Bishop from the Long Island community in Kingsport, Tennessee was no exception. It was at this time he skillfully combined tequila, vodka, gin, rum, whiskey, and maple syrup, calling his concoction the Old Man Bishop. It is said that upon his death, Old Man Bishop passed the recipe down to his son, Ransom, who transformed the concoction into what we now recognize today.

While its difficult to corroborate this tale, the drinks outward appearance passes for just a regular old iced tea, which made it easy to enjoy outside the privacy of ones own home during an era when alcohol consumption was highly illegal. Moreover, as drinks were highly restricted at the time, the 22 percent ABV of what we now know as a Long Island would certainly keep the party going, even if the number of drinks was restricted to one.

The Long Island Iced Tea also appeared in two publications from the 1960s Betty Crockers New Picture Cookbook, published in 1961, and Virginia Habeebs 1963, American Home All-Purpose Cookbook.

In other words,

  • 1/2 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
  • Cola, just a splash

There are, of course, several variations to this recipe. The most common version replaces the lemon juice with a sour mix.

Why Is Long Island Iced Tea So Strong

There are many possible reasons why Long Island iced tea is so strong. For one, the tea itself might be more potent than other varieties. Additionally, the water used in the production process might be cold and hard, which makes it easier to extract the flavor and caffeine from the tea leaves. Finally, the ice cubes used in the drink are often made from very large blocks, which means they contain a lot of water and can pack a punch.

Choosing Your Spirits For A Revamped Long Island Iced Tea

Long Island Ice Tea | Emeril Lagasse

The original Long Island Iced Tea uses a mix of clear spirits, including Vodka, Gin, Rum and Tequila, all in equal portions. I have a couple issues with this concept.

  • For one, usually you cant even taste the spirits that are used in this cocktail. To me, that seems pointless. Im always cognizant of the spirits I work with. That they are prominent, recognizable and compliment the flavours Im working with. For example, Vodka is clearly just in the original recipe to lengthen the drink and make it more boozy, not really adding anything else in terms of flavour.
  • The Long Island has potential of being a sophisticated cocktail. And I believe it has all to do with the ratios and not making everything equal portion. I know its easy for everyone to understand that you just add the same amount of ounces of everything, but again, not very purposeful. When mixing Tequila, Rum and Gin, these are all powerhouses in terms of flavour. If I had to revamp the original with its original spirits, I would likely put in equal portions Gin and Tequila, and bringing down the ratio of Rum as a little goes a long way! And I would switch it to a Rhum Agricole or Cachaca for a delicious twist.

But I decided to go a very different direction. Using a medley of darker spirits, different measures, and using ACTUAL tea. It has a lot more depth and character to it that I think youll all love. Heres the breakdown of the cocktail ingredients, comparing it to a BURGER!

The Long Island Iced Tea Standard Ingredients

In the following paragraphs, we are going to take a look at the standard Long Island Iced Tea ingredients. Overall, Long Island iced tea contains five shots of alcohol, a sweet and sour mix, and fuzzy drink or juice, according to your preferences

  • Vodka When it comes to making Long Island iced tea, it is important to start with vodka. Now, you cannot use the standard vodka the vodka for this drink needs to be good for mixing and blending with other alcohol and ingredients. Therefore, you will need ½ oz of good, mixing vodka. We recommend you use the Finlandia vodka, which is excellent for mixing drinks. It is somewhat strong and has a bitter aftertaste, but in combination with other Long Island ingredients, it creates a perfect flavor.
  • Gin Another important Long Island iced tea ingredient is gin. You will need ½ oz of best-dried gin for this drink. Just like the vodka, the gin you use needs to be able to mix well with other alcohol and ingredients. Therefore, we recommend you use the Beefeater gin, which is great because it is both spicy and fruity, and creates a great balance in the drink. This gin is dry but has a wonderful herbal bouquet and a citrus aftertaste. This makes it perfect for the Long Island iced tea. You can also try using the Bombay Sapphire gin, which is also ideal for mixing gin in cocktails.

Scale It Up Or Scale It Down

The great thing about a Long Island Iced Tea is how easy it is to scale up or down depending on your mood and crowd size. If you want to build a pitcher you can scale the whole recipe up, Trickett says. Instead of trying to shake the giant drink just, give it a good stir and let it sit so the ice can work its way into everything. If youd prefer to have a more aperitif-sized cocktail, scale everything down so that you are only using a half ounce of each spirit, like Holiday used to do. The bar opted for the smaller size because it was much more cost effective and also because it was the more responsible way to serve customers. But if youre at home, go ahead and get bombed, Trickett says. Safely, of course.
