THE BEST ICED TEA | how to make cold brew iced tea

Iced tea is a summer staple, and pretty much on everyones mind whether they order it from a coffee shop or make it at home.

Even being such a common drink, some questions do arise. This is natural, and were going to get to the bottom of the most common questions about iced tea.

Starting with exactly what this drink is.

Sun And Refrigerator Tea

Iced tea can be brewed by placing tea in a large glass container with water and leaving the container in the sun for hours. This often results in a smoother flavor. An advantage is that sun tea does not require using electricity or burning fuel, thus saving energy. Sun tea is sometimes served with syrup or lemon.

The temperature of the tea brewed in this manner is never heated high enough to kill any bacteria, leaving the water potentially unsafe to drink. The tea should be discarded if it appears thick, syrupy, or has rope-like strands in it, though it may be hazardous even without such indicators.

Because of this danger an alternative called “refrigerator tea” has been suggested where the tea is brewed in the refrigerator overnight. This has the dual advantage of preventing the growth of harmful bacteria and the tea already being cold without the addition of ice.

Mango Iced Tea Cocktail

Similarly, the mango iced tea cocktail uses Canadian whisky. These blended whiskeys are known for their smooth, often softer, taste that won’t overpower the cocktail. This recipe is flavored with mango rum, and most are slightly sweetened but not as much as liqueurs. The drink has a nice balance of flavor and can quickly become a new favorite.

When it comes to the health benefits of iced tea, researchers usually focus on black tea. But one type of herbal tea may actually be more helpful when it comes to losing weight.

A 2018 study published in the journal Frontiers in Physiology found that drinking herbal tea made from yerba mate, a plant native to South America , encouraged fat oxidation. Kathryn Schwab, a health and wellness researcher at Tons of Goodness, explained, ” are in a constant state of turnover, meaning that fat is continuously entering or exiting the cell … Fatty acids released into the bloodstream can then be burned for energy. When fat is oxidized, this results in weight loss.” Interestingly, the 2018 study found that iced yerba mate was more effective at fat oxidation than hot yerba mate.

If you’re one of the 56.4 percent of American women trying to lose weight, you may want to swap out your regular iced black tea for an iced yerba mate.

Is Iced Coffee Any Different From The Rest

Strawberry Iced Tea

Yes, iced coffee is a little different from other cold coffee types.

Its different from cold brew because the hot brewed coffee tastes noticeably different from the cold brewed one.

Its different from a frappe because brewed coffee is always different from instant coffee. Theres more depth and complexity in brewed than instant.

And iced coffee is different from any other cold coffee with milk because those have a very specific milk to coffee ratio. For example an iced latte is really 3/4 milk and the rest espresso and ice.

Whereas iced coffee is 3/4 coffee and the rest milk and ice.

Of course, this also depends on how much milk you want to add.

All in all, iced coffee deserves its own name and place, simply because its made differently from all the rest.

How To Make Iced Tea Using A Sun Brew Method

On a sunny day, brew your tea using the power of the world’s largest natural energy source, the sun. Combine tea and water in a covered pitcher and place outside or in a window with direct sun for at least six hours. As the sun warms the water the tea slowly releases its flavor. Strain or remove the tea bags and serve on ice or keep refrigerated until ready to drink.

Start With The Best Tea

Unquestionably, tea is the flavor that anchors the drink. High-quality teas work best, so choose the same types you’d gravitate towards when brewing a hot cup for drinking. Any flavor works, and while black iced tea is the one you likely know best, green tea, herbal tea, or fruity teas are all equally delicious chilled. Another option? Opt for a combination, like Martha does in one of her favorite iced teas, which combines lots of Red Zinger with English Breakfast in one pitcher.

Both tea bags or loose leaf tea are suitable for making iced tea. Just make sure to remove the bags or strain the tea before serving. A note on water: It’s important that the water tastes great, too. If you love tap water, go for it. However, to avoid off putting flavors in water that can come through in tea, we generally suggest opting for filtered or spring water.

Pro Tip: If you are brewing a pitcher with multiple tea bags, tie the bags together before adding them to the pitcher so it’s easier to fish them all out at once. The next-level option is to drape a wooden spoon over the top of the pitcher and tie the strings to the spoon, letting the bags hang in the water.

Sweet Tea Vs Unsweetened Iced Tea

How To Make A Perfect Long Island Iced Tea | Drinks Made Easy

Sweet tea, also called iced tea by the southerners, is a popular staple of the Southern United States.

Sweet tea is basically tea sweetened with sugar or sugar syrup while it is still hot, and is served ice cold. While iced tea is preferred during the summers only, southerners like their ice-cold sweet tea the whole year-round. Read my complete guide to making;Sweet Tea here.

Iced tea, on the other hand, is any tea that is served chilled, over ice. It is usually enjoyed unsweetened and mostly during the summers.

A number of countries have jumped on the iced tea bandwagon, and now different cultures have their own unique versions of iced tea. The Japanese, for instance, have Sencha, Bancha, and Houjicha; all of which are different varieties of iced tea. While, in Singapore, iced tea is served with lemon.

Iced tea and sweet tea also differ in terms of flavor, brewing methods, and health benefits.

Sweet tea, since its brewed in boiling water, has a stronger flavor. While iced tea may have a smoother and milder taste since it is not always brewed in boiling water and may also be cold brewed. As far as health benefits are concerned, unsweetened iced tea is a much healthier option.

According to a research published in the American Heart Association journal Stroke, catechins in green tea help lower total cholesterol levels and provide protection against stroke. ;Sweet tea, being rich in sugars, may lead to dental issues, obesity, and fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

Does Iced Tea Have Calories

If your iced tea is sweetened in any day then yes, it does have calories.

The trouble is that almost always iced tea ends up being sweetened, whether you ask for it or not. Its the default setting for nearly any coffee shop that offers iced tea, and the amount of sugar or sweeteners they use per ounce should be noted somewhere easy to see.

Or, if you cant see the label then ask the barista about the sugar content.

So for example if youre buying a 12 oz/354 ml iced tea, and its sweetened with about 3 teaspoons of sugar then the drink has about 60 calories.

One teaspoon of plain white sugar is 20 calories, and 5 grams of carbs. A teaspoon of sugar for every 4 oz/120 ml of tea is a regular occurrence, so Im using that to figure out the calories.

The actual amount of sugar used many vary from coffee shop to coffee shop. Some may use more, some may use less.

However if your iced tea is not sweetened, at all, then there are no calories to speak of. No carbohydrates or sugars to up the calorie count.

If completely unsweetened iced tea sounds like too much then you might want to check out my article on teas that go well without sugar, or the one on how to sweeten tea without sugar, for a healthier alternative.

You May Stay Looking Young If You Drink Iced Tea Every Day

If you’re worried about aging, you’re not alone. A 2017 survey found that 28 percent of women under 25, 42 percent of women aged 25 to 34, and 54 percent of women between the ages of 35 and 44 worried “regularly” about how they’re aging, as reported by the New York Post. Fortunately, believe it or not, the fountain of youth might actually be a pitcher of iced tea! Yes, if you drink iced tea every day, you may be doing your skin a favor.

When it comes to the physical signs of aging, collagen plays an important role. That’s because collagen, a protein found throughout the body, provides structure to our skin , as explained by Healthline. As we age, our body’s ability to create new collagen decreases, leading to saggy, wrinkled skin . But, as nutritionist Lisa Richards told The List, “It’s been shown that dietary polyphenols, like those found in iced tea, can stimulate the production of collagen in the body.” These polyphenols, she explained, can also prevent damage to collagen from free radicals.

If You’re Stressed You Might Want To Drink Iced Tea Every Day

According to a 2017 Gallup poll, 44 percent of Americans feel stressed in day-to-day life “frequently,” while another 35 percent feel stressed “sometimes.” Parenting and work were the most commonly reported stressors.

Does that sound like you? If so, registered dietitian Trista Best believes a refreshing glass of iced tea might actually help you relax. She explained to The List, “The hormone cortisol, the stress hormone, is known to increase stress … Iced tea is able to naturally lower cortisol production in the body and subsequently reduce anxiety.” A 2007 study conducted by Dr. Andrew Steptoe and colleagues at University College London and published in Psychopharmacology came to the same conclusion, although the researchers only examined black tea’s stress-busting properties.

Getting your stress levels under control is important. According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can cause a number of unpleasant symptoms that negatively effect your physical and psychological health. These include headaches, chest and muscle pain, sleep problems and fatigue, stomach upset, and changes in sex drive. So why not try to drink iced tea every day?

What To Know About Tea Bags Versus Loose Leaf Tea

How To Make Southern Sweet Tea

The difference between tea bag tea and loose tea is the leafs size and shape. According to Goggi, tea bags provide convenience and reproducibility while loose tea allows you to try individual teas or blend your own.

However, Goggi warned against falling into the trap of believing that all loose teas are great or that all tea bags are not, and he has found that some of the most expensive teas in the world are smaller-sized. You should judge a tea by your own desires some like it smoky , some like it light and bright , some like it thick and strong tea that is red and clear for iced tea , he said. You need to try different teas to both explore the many varieties as well as to find your favorite.

When shopping for both loose leaf and tea bags, smell is the biggest indicator of whether the leaf has gone bad or not, according to Formicola. More smell equals more flavor, she explained, noting that it can be really challenging to pick a good tea, mostly because they are packaged in colored and sealed bags to preserve their quality, so you might not be able to see these things.
