Overdoses From Contaminated Poppy Seeds Suggest Need For Action By Fda Dea

What Is POPPY SEED TEA & What Does It FEEL LIKE?

New research finds intentional exposures may be on the rise

Adverse events from the consumption of opiate-laced poppy seeds may be on the rise, according to a new study from researchers at the Center for Science in the Public Interest and Connecticut Poison Control Center using three national databases and published today in Clinical Toxicology.

The plant that produces the poppy seeds commonly used in baking also produces opiates, including morphine and codeine. While the seeds themselves do not generally contain high levels of these compounds, they can become contaminated with plant debris during harvest and require washing and processing to reduce the opiate contents to safe levels. Not all manufacturers, however, thoroughly wash or process their seeds, and some even market their poppy seeds as unwashed or unprocessed, conveying a higher likelihood of opiate contamination to the consumer.

Contaminated poppy seeds pose serious risks to consumers, especially those who drink poppy seed tea. Users of poppy seed tea purchase large amounts of poppy seeds, usually online, and add acidic ingredients to extract the opiates for the purpose of intoxication or to reap claimed benefits such as treatment of pain, anxiety, and opioid withdrawal. Opiate contamination levels can vary widely from batch to batch, putting these users at risk of accidental overdose.

CSPI president Dr. Peter G. Lurie and Dr. Suzane Doyon of UConn Health are Greenthals co-authors on the paper.

Squeeze Some Lemon Juice

When all the liquid are drained from the bottle, remove it from the jar. You can extract more liquid left in the seeds by pouring the seeds into a clean cloth. Squeeze as much liquid as you can.

Now pour a cup of tea and enjoy. You may start by drinking one cup of poppy seed tea to feel the results. If the pain still persists after 30 minutes, you may drink another cup.

I found this method of how to make poppy seed tea on a forum after reading several poppy seed tea recipes online. This method of how to make poppy seed tea is also the same method that two of my past clients have used, so I know it works.

Here is how to make poppy seed tea according to the forum recipe. I have cleaned up the spelling and grammar and added pics, but other than that its the same poppy seed tea recipe.

Alkaloid Extraction From Poppy Seeds

Poppy Seed Tea Recipe

Seven solvents, which covered a broad range of polarity index values and a solvent mix, chloroform: isopropanol , were investigated with respect to alkaloid extraction efficiency.

Table 6. Extraction solvents and associated polarity index values.

For each solvent, extractions were carried out at a different pH’s to obtain the optimum extraction conditions for the alkaloids from the poppy seeds. To avoid contamination by plastic residues from pipette tips by the solvents, glass pipettes were employed.

Poppy seeds from a portion of the #1 seeds were homogenized using a spice blender and approximately 200 mg of the seeds were weighed into glass Durham tubes . For each solvent, the pH was altered to produce a solution of poppy seeds and solvent at the specified pHs. To each solution, deuterated internal standard was added. The tubes were then capped and placed into an ultrasonic bath for 10 min, centrifuged at 4,000 rpm for 10 min. The appropriate layer was transferred to a clean glass tube, where it was dried down under nitrogen at 40°C and reconstituted in 100 L of aqueous mobile phase: extracts were filtered using a 0.22 m nylon syringe filter before being transferred to a glass insert held in an auto-sampler vial for the LC-MS instrument.

How Do You Extract Opium From Poppy Seeds

To extract opium from poppy seeds, score the seed pod with sharp blade. The crude opium sap spills out from the seed pod as a milky, opaque substance, known as latex, and it thickens as it is collected.

Opium is extracted from opium poppy plants about three months after planting, when the flowers begin to bloom. Strip away the leaves of the flower to expose the egg-shaped seed pod that contains the crude opium sap. Harvest opium from seed pods that are raw with no more than a light yellow tint.

To release the opium, use a sharp blade to score the outside of the seed pod into parallel, vertical slits. Be careful not to cut deeply or cut into the inner chambers of the pod. A special tool known as a nushtar can be used to score the seed pod. This tool makes three or four simultaneous slits around the seed pod, allowing for faster harvesting.

The milky opium sap thickens as it mixes with the air, becoming a brown-colored gum. To minimize this change, avoid harvesting in rainy, windy and dewy weather conditions. Opium sap that has thickened must be scraped from the seed pod to harvest. The crude opium is commonly bundled into bricks, balls or cakes and wrapped with plastic material or leaves before distribution.

How To Make Poppy Seed Tea Why I Dont Recommend It

Im an ex-opiate addict and current Investigative Blogger. What I mean by that is I like to try things like kratom, nootropics, supplements, and other things out on myself before I write an article on the topic.

This makes it more fun for me because not only do I provide high-quality information about the article topic, but I also get to write about my personal experience with it, which makes blogging a lot more fun and helps my blog stand apart from the masses.

However, now the time has come for me to write about poppy seed tea, and after doing a lot of research on it, there is no way I will make poppy seed tea and drink it so I can share about my experience in this article.

Why?

Its way too dangerous and I dont take these types of health risks.

I only put things in my body that I know will be safe. Drinking poppy seed tea is a gamble.

Here are a couple of moderate risks of drinking poppy seed tea:

I could honestly care less about these risks of using poppy seed tea. Ive taken plenty of things with these risks during my three and a half years of blogging, including kratom and tianeptine sulfate, and Ive never got addicted to anything.

But here are the main reasons why I will never make poppy seed tea or drink it:

No thank you.

Not for me.

Often Claimed As A Sleep Aid

Poppy latex boasts opioid compounds known for their sleep-inducing properties .

As a result, some people claim that poppy tea or warm milk infused with poppy seeds provides a natural insomnia remedy.

Remember that poppy seeds dont naturally contain these opium compounds, though they can become contaminated during harvesting or due to pest damage .

As most commercially available poppy seeds are cleaned before being sold, any products purchased at your local supermarket likely dont have any insomnia-fighting effects .

While its possible to purchase unwashed poppy seeds that contain higher opioid levels, their use is considered risky. Teas and infusions made from them may contain lethal doses of morphine, and several accidental deaths have been linked to their use .

Unwashed poppy seeds may also cause a dependency thats similar to other chemical addictions. Therefore, their use to treat insomnia is strongly discouraged .

Opiates In Poppy Seed Tea

People are stealing poppy seeds from stores to try to get high

Poppy seeds contain codeine and morphine, and they can also be used to make opium and heroin. But not all seeds are not created equal, and everyone processes and metabolizes them differently. One study gave poppy seeds to volunteers and there was a big variation in how much codeine and morphine were excreted in their urine.

Eating poppy seeds has, in fact, caused individuals to fail urine drug screenings. In the past, even modest amounts of poppy seeds have caused people to test positive for morphine, one of the opiates contained in poppy.

The Department of Health and Human Services , which sets the cutoff values for drug testing, has addressed this issue. The DHHS increased the threshold for detecting opiate metabolites in urine to help prevent these false positives. This means that you can safely enjoy a poppy seed bagel without risking a false positive for opiates on a drug test.

Learn More About Poppy Tea And Its Uses Side Effects And More

Poppy tea is an infusion made from the pods of the opium poppy plant. There are commercial preparations available, but it is common for people to make their own tea from the dried plant materials. The pods contain the opiate compounds:

Poppy tea uses the pods that have been emptied of seeds, but it is possible to get a similar effect from the seeds themselves. The seeds contain virtually no opiates, but they do have some residue on their outer surfaces. Making an effective poppy seed tea requires several pounds of the seeds, so this is by far the less popular preparation.

Uses

Poppy tea is used for its pain relieving and sedating properties. Some people find it to be a viable substitute for prescription painkillers when they are dealing with chronic pain. It is also used for cough suppression, relieving diarrhea, and inducing sleep.

Because the opiate content of plants is variable depending on the environment and conditions in which they were grown, people who make their own tea can never be sure how strong it is going to be. New users may only use one pod, while experienced users may use up to 15 pods per cup of tea. Many falsely believe they can predict the potency of the tea by its smell and color. Poppy tea has an extremely bitter taste and is usually flavored with licorice or another strong flavor to make it more drinkable.

Other Routes Of Administration

Poppy seed tea is intended to be drunk, but there are two case reports of IV use of poppy seed tea . Two men injected poppy seed tea IV together and developed similar and almost immediate reactions: fever, rapid heart rate , vomiting, and myalgia. Upon arrival to the emergency department, their temperature was about 40 °C, oxygen saturation was around 90%, respiration was at 38/min for both men who were writhing in pain and vomiting. Patients were treated with ceftriaxone and vancomycin along with IV benzodiazepines for agitation. Both men had to be admitted to the intensive care unit they left the ICU and at 72 h left the hospital against medical advice .

Eating poppy seeds in large quantities is not associated with opioid toxicity, but there is one case report in the literature where a 54-year-old woman died of a bowel obstruction after eating a very large amount of poppy seeds .

Cases Of Poppy Seed Tea Dependence From The Literature

There is a paucity of literature on poppy seed tea but the approximately dozen articles on the topic relate mainly to case studies of poppy seed tea dependence. An 82-year-old widow in India presented to a clinic with a 55-year history of opium use, starting with an opium candy used to relieve pain after the birth of her fourth child. Over the years, she learned to make a tea from dried poppy pods she consumed 1 to 2 l of this beverage daily and her family brought her for treatment when poppy pods were no longer available to her and she underwent withdrawal symptoms, rated 26 on the Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale . She underwent detoxification under medical supervision and was then started on opioid maintenance therapy with 0.4 mg of buprenorphine and counseling. She was followed for 1 year and had experienced no relapse .

How Do You Make Poppy Seed Tea

There are numerous ways to extract Morphine and Codeine alkaloids from Poppy Seeds.

One method is smoking. You can create home-made opiate extract from as little as 1 pound of poppy seeds. First pour your seeds into a pan with water, and begin to boil. Let it boil until the water is half gone. Then strain out the seeds, and begin boiling again. This time, boil until all the water is gone, and there is a tar looking substance at the bottom of the pan. Get a razor blade and scrape it off the bottom, let dry for at least 12 hours. You can then hot-knife the extract, or load some in a bong with cannabis.

The other method is ingesting it orally in a tea. You can use a cold water extraction, or a hot water extraction. For cold water, pour the desired amount of seeds into a cup of cold water. Let the seeds sit for a few hours, shake occasionally. Strain the seeds, and drink the liquid. For the hot water extraction, pour desired amount of seeds into boiling water, let sit for 20 minutes, then strain seeds, let water cool, drink the water.

*Remember to slightly acidify the water before adding the seeds. You want a pH of about 6.5. You can do this with some lemon juice or lime juice.

Effects:

The “high” of the tea has been described as very similar to most opiates. Euphoria, relaxation, sense of well being, happiness, and sedation are all common effects of the tea.

Side Effects And Tolerance

Learn how and when to remove this template message)

Side effects increase with dosage and include drowsiness, mild stomach ache, lethargy, urinary retention, bradypnea, constipation, nausea, respiratory depression and death. Nausea can be attributed to the presence of noscapine and is more common in first-time or inexperienced users. At high doses, the side effects are dangerous and can cause death through respiratory arrest or inhalation of vomit. Constipation often results from use, as with any opiate.

Poppy tea is highly variable in potency this accounts for almost all deaths related to the substance. Assume the tea is a saturated morphine solution when choosing the appropriate dose. Morphine’s solubility in water is around 60mgs/ml.

Additionally, frequent use results in high tolerance and dependence. Chemical dependency builds in relation to the frequency of use, dosage, age, sex, weight and medical condition. Once chemical dependency has developed, abrupt cessation of use will cause withdrawal symptoms include leg and abdominal cramps, mydriasis, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, insomnia, cravings, lethargy and anxiety. Symptoms of withdrawal usually fade after 4â10 days but cravings and psychological dependence may continue for longer, in some cases up to a year. Treatment methods for addiction are generally the same for any opioid.

How To Make Poppy Seed Tea

In this article, youre going to learn how to make poppy seed tea. However, I dont ever recommend making or drinking poppy seed tea. Why am I writing this article then?

For Harm Reduction.

Many people that have chronic pain and use opioids have had their meds cut in half or more by doctors due to recent new CDC opioid prescribing guidelines and as a result have turned to kratom for pain relief.

However, the FDA and DEA are both trying to ban kratom, and it may just be a matter of time before it becomes illegal.

Thus, kratom users and opiate addicts will no longer have this plant available to help them with their needs. And since poppy seeds are legal, I predict that many people will begin to browse the internet to learn how to make poppy seed tea.

Many individuals are already doing this, but if kratom becomes illegal, I believe poppy seed tea will become very popular, and this method of natural opiate consumption can be deadly due to the user not knowing exactly how powerful each batch of poppy seeds are.

I want to restate that I strongly recommend you never mess around with poppy seed tea because the risks far outweigh the benefits.

But I respect each individuals ability to do their own research and make their own choices, and I would rather you at least know the safest way to make the tea and the dangers associated with it, so here is how to make poppy seed tea along with the possible risks.
