Black Tea Health Benefits

While green tea steals all the press when it comes to health benefits, remember that black teas and green teas come from the same plant, so it stands to reason that they share many of the same benefits.

While there are many scientifically unproven theories about how drinking tea can have some significant health benefits, here are a handful of positive outcomes a couple cuppas of black tea can have on your life:

Increase your antioxidant intake. Antioxidants are known properties in black tea, and they are well documented for a range of health benefits, including removing free radicals and helping reduce cell damage, decreasing inflammation, and more. Theaflavins and thearubigins are naturally occurring polyphenols and the main sources of antioxidants in black tea.

May boost heart health. Research has shown that flavonoids, which are found in black tea, benefit heart health. Flavonoids are also found in fruits, vegetables, red wine, and dark chocolate. While anyone with heart issues should follow their doctors recommendations for their diet, a cup or two of black tea just may give your heart a helping hand. Keep the milk and sugar out of your cuppa, however, to make sure youre not counteracting any possible health benefits with added fats and sugars.

Can help with digestion. Black tea is teeming with tannins and other chemicals that can have a relaxing effect on the bodys digestive system.

Whats The Difference Between Black Tea And Green Tea

Harney & Sons, HT Tea Blend, Peppermint Herbal, Caffeine ...

While black teas and green teas originate from the same mother of all tea plants, Camellia sinensis, it is their distinctly different processing that makes them worlds apart. While black teas are oxidized, green teas are briefly cooked using either steam or dry heat. Just as the oxidation process gives black teas their flavors and colors, cooking the tea leaves fixes the green colors and more vegetal flavors.

Also, due to how green tea is processed, it retains more catechins than black tea and therefore more antioxidants. For more information about the wonderful world of green tea, read Everything You Want to Know About Green Tea!

The plastic used in these bags is typically food-grade nylon, but some are made from a plant-based plastic derived from corn.

The history of tea is murky as a splash of milk in Earl Grey, but its most popular origin story traces back more than 5,000 years, to ancient China. While the true beginnings may never be known, the popularity of tea is undeniable. Our round-up is just a pinprick in this vast and rich tapestry, but it includes delicious options for all kinds of tea lovers.A great cup is not only about finding great tea, but also knowing how to brew tea properly. “Mistakes with brewing tea usually involve time, temperature, or water-to-tea ratio,” said Shunan Teng, Founder and CEO of Tea Drunk, which specializes in rare Chinese teas. “This means brewing for too long or too short using an incorrect temperature or using too much or too little tea. This Earl Grey variation won Harneys customer creation contest! And I see why, because its super-tasty.

Imagine, if you will, Earl Grey with lavender, oolong, and vanilla added. The contents of this tea SOUND like a sock drawer, but they work together well. The oolong adds a gentler, rounded-out tea note, and the lavender & vanilla sweeten up the citrus of the bergamot.

Ive never BEEN to London, but I like to imagine its classy, rounded-out, and fun like this. Everyones tastefully, liberally dressed there are fun activities like art museums and bookstores and the breeze is always crisp. Oh, and Im dating one of the Queens Guard with the fuzzy hats.

SO ANYWAY. Im glad this tea won the prize, because its tasty and fun. Next time you want to pretend youre in London with your fuzzy-hatted partner, get on a double-decker bus with this one

To Caffeinate Or Not To Caffeinate

Tea can be decaffeinated in two ways. The best and natural way uses carbon dioxide under heat and pressure to remove caffeine. This method retains most of the beneficial antioxidantsone reason many people drink tea in the first place.

The second method uses a chemical solvent called ethyl acetate that strips both the caffeine and the beneficial antioxidants from the tea and leaves behind a chemical residue.

The amount of caffeine in regular tea can be reduced by pre-brewing, or “rinsing,” your tea leaves . After rinsing, simply brew your tea as directed.

According to Shunan Teng, the founder and CEO of Tea Drunk, one tip for making better tea at home is to use hotter water for high-quality tea and lower-temperature water for subpar tea. “Hotter temperatures bring out the flavors in better tea,” she says, “and lower temperatures dilute the flaws in lower-quality tea. With bad tea, the bitterness and astringency would come out with higher temperatures.”

What Doesnt Impact Tea Caffeine Content

Drink tea that makes you smile. Harney & Sons Teas

This is probably the most surprising part of the equation. Many people will tell you that the longer the tea leaf oxidizes, the more bioavailable the caffeine becomes. If true, this would mean black teathe most oxidized stylehas the most caffeine, followed by oolongs, greens, then whites. Unfortunately, oxidizing actually seems to lower caffeine content. In fact, when scientists at Teacraft performed an analysis, they found that the length of oxidation actually decreased the amount of caffeine:

Further reinforcing this research, the longer the tea leaf oxidizes, the more large polyphenols are produced, which bind up caffeine and make it unavailable for human absorption.

This means that black tea doesn’t have more caffeine than green tea, white tea, or any other type per se.

If youre interested in more, the team at Camellia Sinensis Tea House in Montreal keeps this running list of the teas tested using liquid chromatography, which shows a number of green teas ahead of blacks.

How Much Caffeine Is In Tea

It’s not always easy to tell how much caffeine is in a cup of tea. Caffeine content varies depending on the type of teaeven two black teas can have disparate levels of caffeineand how the tea is prepared. Water temperature, steep time, and the amount of tea used all affect caffeine content. On average, an 8-ounce cup of black tea contains around 50 milligrams of caffeine, which is roughly half a cup of coffee. Some black teas have as high as 120 milligrams of caffeine, however. Oolong averages slightly less caffeine than black tea at 40 milligrams per cup. Green tea ranges from 12 to 75 milligrams, with an average of around 30 milligrams. Some white teas have caffeine levels up to 75 milligrams, but the majority are between 15 to 20 milligrams. Finally, herbal tea is naturally caffeine-free.
