Chai Tea Latte recipe – better than Starbucks

I am a HUGE chai tea latte fan! I recently decided to add another entry to my Starbucks Copycat recipe collection which have been our most popular recipes here at Snacks and Sips! So for this recipe, I am taking on Starbucks classic chai tea latte recipe. For my version, you just need 3 simple ingredients and about 10 minutes. This recipe is an alternative way of making a chai latte at home, usually people make them by using chai concentrate and combining that with milk. I like this version better because it allows you to control the sugar and it is WAY cheaper overall than spending $4 on a little jug of chai concentrate that only makes a few drinks.

What Is Chai Tea

Originating in India nearly 5,000 years ago, chai has been loved by many. Legend has it that chai didnt originally contain tea leaves, milk or sugar when it was first created. It was only comprised of a mix of spices native to India and was used for Ayurveda, an all-natural Indian healing practice.

Flash-forward to the 1600s when black tea leaves were discovered in China. Once the tea leaf, known as Camellia sinensis assamica, made its way to India, the chai recipe we know and love today was created.

Today, chai tea is a brewed black tea prepared with multiple aromatic spices like ginger and cardamom, milk and sugar. This blend gives chai its full-bodied, spice-filled flavor and creamy mouthfeel.

What Is The Difference Between Chai Tea And Chai Latte

The distinction between Chai Tea and Chai Latte is outlined here.Chai tea is a type of tea that is traditionally prepared by steeping loose tea leaves in hot milk and then adding honey or sugar to taste as a sweetener. While chai lattes are often prepared using either a soluble powder or a syrup that imitates the flavor of chai, there are exceptions to this rule.A chai latte is far more sugary than regular chai tea.

Ingredients In Tea Lattes

The basic ingredients needed to make a tea latte include brewed tea, milk, and a sweetener. They can be served warm, though they’re also popular as an iced latte. Another option is to create a blended drink. For this, you can either blend the latte ingredients with about 1 cup of ice or skip the ice for a drink more like the matcha green tea smoothie.

The most popular type of tea latte is the chai latte. This is a Westernized variation on Indian masala chai and is often served over ice or blended. Other common teas used in lattes include matcha green tea and Earl Grey, though you can use any type of tea you like.

By definition, lattes include milk and whole milk tends to work best, especially if you’re going to steam and froth it. If you prefer, tea lattes are just as tasty when made with soy milk or other milk alternatives. When they are made as dry drinks , they can be adorned with latte art.

Tea lattes are often sweetened with sugar or honey. Again, like the espresso version, you can create flavored lattes. Depending on the tea, you can add a variety of flavors like caramel, vanilla, chocolate, and cinnamon. The easiest way to do this is to buy or make a flavored simple syrup. These can also be used to sweeten your coffee, cocktails, and other drinks.

Consumption Of Tea In The Indian Subcontinent

Kolkatachadaanicha

In 1788 British East India Company began considering uprooting seedlings of tea from China. British tea cultivators were eager to introduce Chinese tea and their techniques to India. Masala tea is a very popular beverage in the Indian subcontinent . Small, roadside businesses called chai walla, make and deliver tea to people’s places of business in a chaidaan, a wooden or metal frame carrier for cups. In Southern India, however, masala chai is not popular instead, tea mixed with milk and sugar is the normal ‘tea’. In the metropolitan city of Mumbai, roadside tea stalls serve smaller cups of tea at a lower budget which is referred to as ‘cutting chai’, the term ‘cutting’ referring to the halving of quantity contained in a full cup to reduce the cost of the cup of tea. Circa 2020, the cost of a ‘cutting’ cup of tea varies between 6 and 10 – a full cup costing 10 to 20.

What Does Chai Latte Taste Like

Chai tea alone is usually more concentrated, but when served with milk the strong spices get diluted in the softness of the milk.

This means that the flavors are more subtle. Since youre adding milk to smooth things out, this has a much different flavor profile than chai tea.

A great analogy Ive heard about chai latte is that it tastes like Christmas.

Personally, I think this is a great description. The warm spices remind me of the holiday season and just make me feel cozy and happy inside.

Another great analogy I heard a barista use to describe chai latte is that it tastes like if you dipped a snickerdoodle cookie in a glass of warm milk.

I find a coffee latte to have stronger flavor profile than a chai latte. This is because chai tea comes with spices, which tend to dilute the flavor of the tea.

    Homemade Vs Store Bought

I recommend making homemade chai tea concentrate versus buying the concentrate at the store. Here’s why I prefer the homemade version:

    • Lightly sweetened. When making homemade chai tea concentrate, you control the sweetness! I like my lattes lightly sweetened, and I think that you’ll find just 1-2 tablespoons of maple syrup or honey is the perfect amount of sweetness. Store bought chai tea concentrate is very sweet, but it is what they use at Starbucks. If you like really sweet lattes, then either up the amount of sweetener in the homemade version or buy the concentrate at the store.
    • Easy to make. Making chai tea concentrate at home is super simple and requires minimal hands on time. Bring water to a boil, add chai tea bags, cinnamon, nutmeg and sweetener, then let steep for 10 minutes. That’s it. I recommend making extra to store in the fridge!
    • Strong chai spice taste. I personally think that the homemade version has a stronger chai spice taste. I feel that the spices in the store bought version get overtaken by the sweetness.

    Early Types Of Masala Chai

The early forms of masala chai comprised only herbs and spices. Milk was added in the 1800s as a result of the British colonial influence in India.

The British East India Company produced many plantations to create a tea source they can control. They did this as an attempt to undermine the Chinese monopoly of tea.

The local consumption of chai stayed low until promotional campaigns inspired Indian companies to give their workers tea breaks. Due to the high cost of low-quality tea leaves, spices and milk were added to stretch out the beverage.

Currently, India consumes over 800,000 tonnes of tea each year. In addition, two cups of chai are drunk on average per person each day.

Chai is also prepared differently throughout India. For example, it’s common to see chai enjoyed with buffalo milk because the cow is sacred in Hinduism.

The Modern Chai Latte & Variations

Chai Tea Latte – COFFEE BREAK SERIES – Honeysuckle

The modern chai latte is a drink that appeals to many people. Sebastiaan believes that there is no definitive group or demographic that prefer it. He notes that there is no real distinction between people who order chai.

We try to encourage it when people are reaching their caffeine limit but still want a hot drink, he tells me. Its good to be able to offer a nice, milky, sweet, and spicy alternative to their regular cappuccino or latte, too.

Zee adds that she finds the drink is very popular and ordered by a mixed crowd, agreeing with Sebastiaan.

As each coffee shop uses a slightly different recipe when making a chai latte, defined variations are less common. Modifications are generally made to the chai mixture by changing the type or volume of spices used. Sebastiaan says: For now, our team and our customers are super happy with our chai, and we dont feel the need to experiment.

However, Sebastiaan does note that you can make small modifications to change how the drink is served. For example, you can add amaretto to make a hot chai cocktail. Pour the ingredients over ice, instead, and you have a milkshake or frappé-like beverage.

Beyond these variations, there is one version of the chai latte that is noticeably more popular. The dirty chai is made by adding a shot of espresso to a chai latte. Its believed this was created by accident in London in the 1990s.
