How to Make Thai Tea – easy recipe

First, you will need to get your boba. Either buy shop-bought or better still make your own. Check out my recipe for making homemade brown sugar boba. You can use the same recipe picking up the process starting at cooking the homemade boba and through to the end where its cooked in brown sugar syrup.

The boba cooking process and making the brown sugar syrup is the same whether using shop-bought boba or making it at home.

I went to the Big Island in the late spring. After a hike on the lava one day, we stopped at a coffee shop and, on a whim, I ordered Thai tea with boba. I hadnt indulged in Thai tea for a long time, but its burnt sugar acid/sweet bloomed in my mouth and set a hook. When I got home and realized you can get almost all the ingredients for the tea around Anchorage, I started brewing it all the time and keeping it in the fridge. Its a perfect drink for pushing through a grueling work afternoon. I keep boba around for a special treat and eventually even found some wide bubble tea straws so I can get the full bubble tea experience at home.

The hardest part of this recipe is the shopping/sourcing. The first thing you need to find is restaurant-style Thai tea mix. Its basically a black tea and spice mixture with added annatto to give it a rich orange color. I like the Pantai brand tea mix, mainly because it is widely available at Asian markets around Anchorage. The next ingredient is a little trickier. You want to find instant boba or large pearl instant tapioca. The instant part is key. The pearls should be packed soft, and the cooking time should be in the 3- to 5-minute range. Im partial to WaFuYuan brand, black sugar flavor, if you can find it. Boba can be found at Asian markets and some large grocery stores including, sometimes, Walmart.

I will also NPR instead of QR if Im not in a rush. The Thai tea leaves arent as sensitive as other tea leaves. I honestly havent noticed much difference in NPR/QR and time variances for pressure cooking as well. Ive tried 10-15 minutes of high-pressure cooking time and have not noticed any difference.

I always find myself reaching for a glass of refreshing iced tea when Im out with friends in the summer.

This cold beverage is the perfect addition to meals out and about or on hot days when the Texas sun can leave me feeling extremely dehydrated.

Personally, I have strong feelings about ice tea and will only drink traditionally brewed iced tea with sweetener.

I wont even pollute my tea with lemon. Flavored iced teas have never resonated with me but I am in the minority on this.

My family loves flavored iced teas so we are including a fruit-infused iced tea option here as well. ;

Its quite simple to make but you do need to set some time aside for it to brew and it is best if it has a chance to chill in the fridge.

What Is Thai Tea Made Of

Thai tea is made with strong black tea, hot water, sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk and sugar. It can be served hot or iced. Thai tea can be made in different ways, from different ingredients. Traditionally, its made with spices such as star anise, cardamom and cinnamon, but you can make it with pure black tea leaves as well. Tea used for making Thai tea is a special Thai tea mix made with black tea leaves, vanilla flavoring and yellow food coloring. But rest assured, even if you dont have the mix or want to make a 100% natural Thai tea, it will still taste delicious and refreshing.

The base of Thai tea is a cup of strongly brewed black tea. You will usually need to use about 2 teaspoons of black tea leaves per cup and steep them for at least 10-30 minutes. Since Thai tea is made with a lot of sugar, any potential bitterness from over-steeping the tea leaves will not be noticeable at all. Choose broken or CTC tea leaves to get the best flavor. Lighter black teas wont be suitable for making Thai tea.

How To Make Thai Iced Tea

We’ll show you two ways to make Iced Thai tea: real Thai;iced tea;and regular Thai tea.;

Most of the regular iced Thai tea mixes usually contain syrup or low-grade powder. But the real iced Thai tea gets its flavor from high-quality spices and black tea, excluding any artificial ingredient. That means your drink won’t become bright orange since the color comes from a dye added to the Thai tea mixes.;

If you love;masala chai;and other milky or spiced black teas, then you’ll also love this beverage. If you don’t have all the spices listed in this recipe, that’s fine; you can leave out one or two.;

But if you want to get the full flavor, you can get tamarind powder at your local Indian or Southeast Asian market.;

Even though you can use tea bags, we recommend using loose-leaf tea; it tastes better because the loose-leaf flavor is richer and more complex.;

  • Start a kettle to boil your water.
  • While thats going on, set a fine-mesh sieve or infuser over a heatproof glass measuring cup and measure 3 tablespoons of tea mix into the sieve.

    To make a Thai boba tea from scratch you will need black tea, which you can find anywhere and use your preferred type. You will be adding spices to the tea to get the right flavor for a Thai tea.

    You will need sugar or some type of sweetener in order to get the right flavor profile for the tea.

    Star anise, whole cardamom, cinnamon sticks, vanilla bean, turmeric and vanilla or almond extract will finish out the flavor profile to turn your standard black tea into a Thai tea.

    Sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk are going to give you the creamy texture that your tea needs to be a true Thai boba tea or milk tea.

  • Put the tea bag, 2 ½ cups of water, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, 2 pieces of star anise, 1 tablespoon of whole cardamom, 1 cinnamon stick, ¼ vanilla bean, and 2 teaspoons of ground turmeric into a pot and simmer.
  • Once the tea is simmering lower the heat and leave to simmer for 3-5 minutes.
  • Pour through a strainer to remove all pieces of spices and tea.
  • Put tea in the refrigerator to cool.
  • Prepare your boba by boiling a pot of water and adding the boba.
  • Cook your boba for 5-7 minutes and immediately drain and rinse under cold water.
  • Place boba in the bottom of a glass and fill with ice.
  • Pour the tea over the ice.
  • Mix sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk together to create a smooth ingredient.

    The only difference in our Thai tea recipe when compared to most restaurant versions is that were using a little less sugar. But really, once you get the basics down on making Thai iced tea you can customize the flavors and concentration the way you like. Its one of those recipes that is great no matter how you make it because its just so decadent and satisfying.

    One of the key factors in making it like the restaurants is using authentic Thai tea mixes. These Thai tea mixes are normally dyed with yellow food coloring and thats what gives it its bright orange color. Also, Thai tea has a vanilla aroma to it.     How To Make Thai Pearl Milk Tea

    This version kicks Thai tea up a notch. Thai Pearl Milk, called Cha Nom Khimuk, is chilled Thai tea poured over tapioca pearls.

    Tapioca pearls are made from a starch extracted from the cassava root. They are gelatinous and chewy. You can easily make these pearls at home without needing to go to an expensive bubble tea joint.

    You can purchase the dehydrated pearls from Amazon. To prepare them, bring water to boil in a large saucepan and gently add tapioca pearls. Turn down the heat, and let the pearls cook in simmering, hot water for 30 minutes, stirring often to keep the pearls from sticking to one another. Remove from heat, cover and let stand for another 30 minutes. Strain and rinse with cool water. Sprinkle with sugar and mix, and put the pearls in the fridge to absorb the sweet flavor.

    Spoon pearls into the serving glasses, filling around 1/3 of the glass. Pour chilled Thai tea, and voila! Thai Pearl Milk Tea is ready to serve.

    Whats In Thai Iced Tea

    In general, Thai iced tea is made up of a tea mix thats steeped in hot water, then mixed traditionally with sweetened condensed milk and topped with crushed ice. However, you can also use regular white sugar or make your own simple syrup and add a milk of your choosing.

    The Thai iced tea mix packets themselves have very limited labels from my experience. All of my test packets list some sort of tea , maybe sugar, and always some sort of food coloring.

    How To Make Organic Hot Thai Tea Latte From Scratch At Home

    Usually, Thai people drink Thai Hot Tea or Dark Thai Hot Tea in the morning, but unlike its cold version, it is usually served with no milk content just sweetened with sugar.

    There are many different types of black tea out there, but the one I prefer for this Thai Tea base is Assam Black Tea; its flavourful especially when combined with milk and adds some bright natural color to our tea.; In order to add a more smokey profile to this Thai Hot Tea Latte, Ive decided to combine Assam Black Tea with some Lapsang Souchong an ancient Chinese tea dried over smoky pine fires, giving it its distinctively smoky flavor.

    However, even without those extra ingredients, this Thai Tea recipe below is just as delicious as any restaurants Cold Thai Tea, but with the creaminess and warmness of a hot latte. Because personally, I think everyone needs a little Hygge in their drinks to compliment and appreciate all that winter has to offer.
