Tip #2: Know The Types Of Questions On Teas Reading Passages

Youll notice that the TEAS Reading Test features different kinds of questions and that you might have to flip back and forth between the questions and the passage to answer them.

This can get overwhelming quickly, so I recommend that my students focus on breaking these questions types into three general categories:

  • Questions that require you to examine the entire passage
  • Questions that require you to look at specific sections or words
  • Questions that require you to use critical thinking and make connections beyond the passage
  • Understanding what you should do on each of these types of TEAS reading questions can help you pass the reading test!

    Read The Directions Carefully

After youve practiced the test a few times, youll start to feel more confident about it. Its possible youll go into test day feeling good and well-equipped, and you might want to speed through the test because you feel like you have it down. Resist that urge. Even if youve seen similar practice questions dozens of times, take a moment to read all the directions. Questions might not end up being about what you think theyre about, so watch out for twists or turns that will play on your assumptions.

Learn How To Pass The Teas Reading Section With Strategy

HOW TO PASS THE ATI TEAS TEST!

To learn how to pass the TEAS reading test you need to learn time-saving strategies.

Most study guides do not discuss time-saving strategies. In my online TEAS prep course, we cover methods to save time on specific types of questions.

One of the TEAS test reading tips I give my students is to look for TEAS Reading questions where you likely dont have to look at the entire passage. These include

    • Questions that ask you to find the authors opinion or bias
    • Questions that ask you to follow a set of instructions
    • Questions that ask you to define a specific word or phrase

Using these strategies is a skill but so so helpful!

One of my past students said, My Reading section score was crazy! I scored a 90 percent. Im so happy that I found your program. I really feel that it prepared me, especially with that awful Reading section. These tips take practice, but they do work.

One of my best TEAS reading tips to improve your TEAS Reading score is to always read the question first. This is helpful for a few reasons:

    • You can see if theres a time-saving strategy to use quickly, as specific question types can use specific strategies.
    • You can avoid getting confused by purposely confusing extra information.
    • You can quickly determine if the question requires you to read the entire passage or just a section of the passage.

Finally, the TEAS is a standardized test, and standardized tests are designed to make you feel the time pressure.

    Is The Teas Difficult

If youre the type who struggles to perform well on standardized tests, you may find the TEAS challenging. Others find the sheer breadth of the subjects to be overwhelming. Many test-takers have found the Reading and English section of the test to be moderately difficult. However, many TEAS takers vouch that the Science and Math section are more complex and challenging.

The timed nature of the exam can be difficult for some. You have a set time to complete each section of the exam, and you cannot go back to change your answers. If you’ve been in the workforce and out of school for years, you may not remember a lot of the material covered.

Overall, the TEAS test is difficult because nursing school is difficult. The test allows nursing schools to select students who have the best chance of successfully practicing. Nursing school is hard. The TEAS exam is one of the first steps on the way of becoming a registered nurse, and it is one of the many challenges you’ll face to secure your place as a health care professional.

40% of students take the TEAS test more than once. Not taking the time to review the subjects properly is one of the biggest mistakes you can make.

    Organize Your Study Time

It’s essential that the test-taker set aside time to study each day. The TEAS test should NOT be attempted without proper preparation and study time. A great way to stay organized is to assign a specific day and time to study. For example, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. When one makes “appointments” to study, it creates accountability and leads to a higher chance of following through with reviewing the material. Calendars, phone apps/alerts, and personal planners can help students stay on schedule with their study times.

    Dont Forget To Take Breaks

Taking a break from studying is almost as important as reviewing the manual and practice tests. Breaks present the opportunity to clear your mind of stress and worry, which is crucial at keeping information. If you are studying seven days a week, make sure you allocate at least one day off. During this day, make sure you get enough mental rest and not worry about the upcoming exam. On the final week before the exam, make sure you get plenty of sleep.

Finally, on the day of the exam, make sure you get at the exam venue early and follow the guidelines set by the examiner.

How To Study For The Teas Test

You can find many ways to prepare for the TEAS test. You can come up with your own study plan that suits your schedule, or you can keep yourself on track with ATI’s provided study plan. Identify your own strengths and weaknesses, and focus on the subject areas where you struggle or have known weaknesses.

Many organizations provide published study guides and full-length practice exams to help students. You might find these TEAS test guides at your local or school libraries for free. More independent test-takers might prefer to read a study guide book and make their own flash cards.

In addition, students can take advantage of school resources. “I often recommend turning to your network of instructors or in-school student resource centers,” Amiel advises.

Amiel suggests looking for these services at your school or college: “For example, do any of your college instructors offer reading, math, science and English and language usage tutoring? Is there a student resource center that offers tutoring on these subjects?” Forming study groups is a great way to study!

Amiel adds that these resources are usually free for students.

No matter how you study, ATI recommends you dedicate at least six weeks of preparation for the exam. You can find additional study tips for online nursing students here.

“These materials from ATI not only helped me to figure out how I should prioritize my studies, but they also gave me the confidence that I needed to perform well on this test. As someone with student loans, I think twice about everything that I choose to spend my money on; however, when I purchased these prep materials, I saw the purchase as an investment in my future. And now as a current nursing school student in my first semester, I am happy to say that it more than paid off!”

What Is On The Teas Test

Thankfully, the TEAS test is similar to most of the standardized tests you’ve already taken in your previous schooling. Most of what you need to know to pass the TEAS are subjects you already covered in high school.

The test has 170 questions divided into four sections:

    Reading

    • Tests your ability to read and comprehend passages, charts, labels, directions, and measurements.
    • 64 minutes long

    Science

    • Tests your knowledge of physical, life, and earth sciences. This section also tests your scientific reasoning ability and your understanding of the human body.
    • 63 minutes long
    • Tests your knowledge of spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and context.
    • 28 minutes long
    • Tests your ability to solve math problems and measure and interpret data.
    • 64 minutes long

Types Of Reading Teas Test Questions

TEAS Reading Question Type #1: Questions that involve finding thekey ideas of ATI TEAS reading passages and paragraphs.

These questions might be about passage structure, organization, or topic, summary, or main idea. You might also need to follow directions.

These questions often require looking at the big picture of, well, a big passage. In my TEAS Prep course, we talk about how to pinpoint the right answer quickly so that you dont get overwhelmed by a big wall of text.

TEAS Reading Question Type #2: Questions that focus on specific words and details involve analyzing the authors tone or bias, determining word meaning, or working with text features like italics.

These questions are all about the details. Many times, you dont need to read the entire passage to find the answer. In the course, we talk about strategies you can use for specific types of detail questions.

TEAS Reading Question Type #3: Questions that involve using sources, including looking at themes, using charts or graphs, and finding primary sources.

Answering these questions correctly often requires memorizing specific concepts. In this course, youll get guidance on what to memorize so that you can answer these questions with confidence.

In short, youll need to recognize if a TEAS question requires you to look at the big picture, the details, or the application.
