How To Choose Green Tea

Green Tea Good for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Green tea comes in leaf form but is also available in a powdered form called matcha. Most people new to green tea prefer the mild flavor of leaf tea, but matcha is a powerful antioxidant with many benefits.

To get the most from your leaf tea, look for green tea with high levels of EGCG. A Consumer Lab study tested 24 brands of green tea for EGCG and noted the following.

  • On a budget, Lipton Green Tea was the best choice, with 71 mg of EGCG per brewed cup.
  • A little more expensive, Teavana Gyokuro Imperial Green Tea had the highest levels of EGCG at 86 mg .
  • Looking for prepared, iced, sweetened green tea for an on-the-go, refreshing sip? Harney & Sons Organic Green Tea comes with just under 47 mg of EGCG but only a third of the sugar of other iced brands.

Green Tea Vs Other Teas

Green, white, and black teas come from the Camellia sinensis plant. The only difference between them is when they’re harvested:

  • White tea is harvested earliest
  • Green is harvested a little later
  • Black is harvested later still

The earlier the harvest, the more antioxidants and less caffeine it has. Animal studies have shown the anti-inflammatory effect of green tea extract to be superior to that of black tea extract.

Green, black, and white teas come in different varieties. Because they’re all from the Camillia sinensis plant, they contain the same polyphenols, although the amounts may differ.

TEA VARIETIES
Pu-erh; Later than black, naturally fermented

Herbal teas , rooibos , and honeybush teas don’t come from the Camellia sinensis plant. Some of them may offer health benefits. However, they don’t contain the same polyphenols or effects as the varieties above.

Food As Treatment For Arthritis

Arthritis symptoms can include joint swelling, pain, stiffness, and decreased range of motion.;Some forms of arthritis, like rheumatoid arthritis, are inflammatory diseasescaused by inflammation in the body that affects the joints and other systems. Others, like osteoarthritis, are the causes of inflammation, particularly in the joints.

Either way, managing and reducing inflammation is essential to reducing pain, stiffness, and swelling for both types of conditions. Inflammation associated with arthritis is often targeted by medications with the aim to help improve symptoms and decrease pain. Certain foods also have inflammatory properties, making them a powerful complementary treatment for arthritis.

Researchers have found that the Mediterranean diet may provide benefits in reducing pain and swollen and tender joints in rheumatoid arthritis patients. One study looked at adherence to the Mediterranean diet and pain associated with osteoarthritis. It concluded that, within the study group of 4330 subjects,;a lower risk of osteoarthritis symptoms and pain was associated with those who followed a Mediterranean diet pattern.

Other studies have looked at a general anti-inflammatory diet and its impact on arthritis. One research trial saw a positive effect of an anti-inflammatory diet on disease activity in people with rheumatoid arthritis.

Not Sweet: Too Much Iced Tea Causes Kidney Failure

Office of Public Affairs

Drinking tea is good for your health. It may lower the risk of cancer, it can encourage weight loss, and recent studies have shown tea can help lower blood pressure.

But one Arkansas man discovered there can be too much of a good thing.

In May 2014, a 56-year-old man arrived at Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, complaining of weakness, fatigue and body aches. Doctors discovered that his kidneys were failing. He was placed on dialysis. After questioning the patient, they learned that he drank 16 8-ounce glasses of iced tea daily, which is about 1 gallon.

Iced tea is full of oxalic acid, which, when taken in excess, deposits in your kidneys and mucks up the work of removing waste from the blood, says Scott Youngquist, MD, an emergency physician at University of Utah Health. This patient was drinking 16 8-ounce glasses of iced tea per day for an unknown period of time. This created a load of oxalic acid that his kidneys couldnt handle, leading to renal failure.

Black tea is rich in oxalate, a compound found naturally in many foods. Too much of it can also lead to kidney stones. The man likely consumed 1,500 milligrams of the compound daily. As a comparison, the average person ingests between 150 and 500 milligrams of oxalate each day.

This kind of kidney failure has also been reported due to excessive consumption of star fruit, cucumber fruit, rhubarb and peanuts, Youngquist says.

Alcohol And Gout Risk

Top Foods that Fight Rheumatoid Arthritis

Although beer may be the worst drink for gout, any alcoholic beverage can trigger gout symptoms in people who are prone to the disease. Alcohol causes the kidneys to excrete alcohol instead of excreting uric acid. That increases the amount of uric acid in the blood, which could provoke a gout attack in about one or two days, warns David Freeman, MD, a rheumatologist at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.

Why Do I Have Ra

What is causing your joint pain? RA is an autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune disorders result from your immune system mistaking your normal cells for foreign cells and attacking/destroying them. When your immune system attacks the lining of the membrane surrounding your joints , inflammation occurs. The constant inflammation of the synovium thickens the membrane lining and wears away the cartilage and bone in your joints, causing the physical pain you experience.

The tricky thing about RA is that doctors are still unsure of what the underlying cause is. While genetics seem to be a contributing factor, the baffling mystery is that the majority of people suffering from RA have no family history of it.

The Benefits Of Tea For Arthritis Pain

Many people are used to using anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve pain.

These are medications that, while usefully, in the long term can damage our liver.

Therefore, medicinal herbs can sometimes serve as a supplement to medical treatment.

Sometimes joint pain is the pre-rheumatoid arthritis step, hence we should always be under medical surveillance.

But lets see what medicinal herbs can do for us:

They can help us clean, seal our bodys metabolic waste and toxins.

They could improve our circulation by favoring lymphatic cleansing.

This helps reduce the toxins that cause inflammation and pain in our body.

Many plants are likely to act as natural antibiotics.

    They also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Relax, reassure us, and remove tension from our muscles; thus, they put less pressure on the joints.

The Health Benefits Of Turmeric Tea

The main compound of turmeric is curcumin which gives the spice its distinct color and contains most of the health-boosting properties.

The book Herbal Medicine reports that turmeric contains anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties and can help to relieve gas and boost liver health. Among the health benefits of turmeric, Herbal Medicine states that it has been used to treat joint inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic digestive problems, and treat abdominal pain.2

However, curcumin is poorly absorbed by the body. To increase the amount of curcumin the body absorbs, its important to add black pepper. For example, a study published in the journal Planta Medica reported that by adding piperine , you can increase the absorption rate of curcumin by around 2000%.3

The Science Backing Dandelions Arthritis Healing Power

10 Herbal Teas for Good Health

    Dandelions are a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Scientific proof comes from;the August 2010 issue of the Journal of Medicinal Food who wrote that dandelion leaf extract shuts down inflammatory pathways in mice.

    The study concluded

The anti-inflammatory effects of TOLs are probably due to down-regulation of NO, PGE, and pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduced expressions of iNOS and COX-2 via inactivation of the MAP kinase signal pathway.

Need more proof?Heres what the author of the book Clinical Naturopathic Medicine; Leah Hechtman, ;says about these underappreciated plants. Dandelion greens inhibit interleukins and other immune molecules that trigger inflammation.;Controlling inflammation by suppressing COX-2 enzymes.

More evidence comes from Korea med, which carries a study stating that dandelion possesses the therapeutic ability to eliminate heat, alleviate swelling, choleresis, and inflammation. This nine-day trial found that oral administration of dandelion significantly alleviated arthritic symptoms in rats. The study stated in conclusion that dandelion was found to be effective in alleviating the inflammatory response and thus arthritic symptoms in arthritis induced rats.

Tea Types That Benefit In Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis is the most common type of arthritis.

It is an autoimmune disorder in which immune cells cannot differentiate between the self-body cells and the foreign cells and began to attack self-cells.

This autoimmune attack leads to the production of many inflammatory components in the body which further leads to the auto-activation of the immune cells.

Due to this progressive inflammatory response, the tissue in joints gets damage to a level of disability if proper treatment is not received.

Rheumatoid arthritis affects almost every joint in the body but hands, feet, wrist, and knees are affected the most.

Along with the joints, it also affects several other organs also like heart, lungs, eyes, and mouth.

Though rheumatoid arthritis is less common than other types of arthritis like osteoarthritis yet it affects more than 1 million people in the USA.

This disease is more common in old age people above 40 years of age and women are more affected by it than men. Around 7 out of every 10 rheumatoid arthritis patients are women.

The cause of this autoimmune disorder is unknown to scientists and doctors.

Hence complete root treatment of the disease is still a challenge but if detected at an early stage its symptoms can be reduced to almost nil.

Tea can be used as one of the natural product to treat arthritis.

    • One group drank a 1 bottle oolong tea a day containing 690 mg of green tea extract catechins.
    • One group drank 1 bottle oolong tea day containing only 22 mg of green tea extract catechins which served as the control group.

After 12 weeks of the daily consumption of the;oolong tea a day containing 690 mg catechins, researchers found the test subjects had:

    • Lower Body weight,
    • Less body fat mass,
    • and subcutaneous fat area was significantly lower
    • Changes in the concentrations of malondialdehyde-modified LDL were positively associated with changes in body fat mass and total fat area in the green tea extract group. .

    Types Of Arthritis And Disorders

The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that usually occurs in the elderly and that this study addresses in an excellent way.

Rheumatoid arthritis, on the other hand, is a chronic and degenerative problem.

Which in addition to affecting the joints of the fingers, wrists, knees, and feet, also affects the muscles and other tissues of the body.

Among the most common, we can highlight osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, bursitis, tendonitis and sprains.

And other types of lesions affecting the ligaments, tendons, and bursae, surrounding the joint.

This problem is more common in women than in men, and 80% of people with women are over age 50.

But little by little, the causes of disorders and problems of bones and joints are often derived from poor diet, lack of physical exercise or excess of the same, toxic habits , overweight, bad postures or even lack of solar exposure.
