Unmeasurable Waste & Inadequate Recycling

The price of a starbucks latte in different countries

According to Clean Water Action, an organization supporting environmental protection, Starbucks uses more than 8,000 paper cups per minute. This totals to more than four billion cups per year and requires the harvesting of about 1.6 million trees.

Starbucks paper cups carry all hot coffees, teas, and espresso drinks. Unfortunately, the insides are lined with a polyethylene plastic coating which prevents the cups from being recyclable.

Statista measures Starbucks fourth quarter 2021 revenue to have reached $8.1 billion. We cannot definitively state the number of their plastic cups, disposable forks, or double layered wax paper bags that were added to landfills as a result of these sales. However, we can assume most of the waste produced by Starbucks customers is not recyclable and therefore, ends up being thrown away.

Although Starbucks pledged to create a fully recyclable cup in 2008, theyve yet to follow through with this commitment. According to Mongabay News, in 2021, 83% of customers believed their paper cups could be recycled but unfortunately, this is not the truth.

Rent cost in midtown Manhattan is $878 per square foot, plus 20% for utilities, depreciation and other expenses. While the space occupied by a seat is 7 square feet, the rule of thumb is to double that to account for the entrance, corridors, storage room, and restrooms if any. Thus, the occupied space we used was the nationwide average of 15 square feet, at an annual cost of $15,800 per seat. This location is opened 15 hours a day, so the cost per hour is $2.89. When you stay for 3 hours, that adds up to $9 for rent.

Starbucks

Some colleagues at Citis global headquarters, which has an Office plan with no offices mentioned that they typically go out to Starbucks for a coffee. I asked them why they would spend 26 minutes to go down 40 stories, cross the street, wait in line, go back, wait for the elevator and go up again if they have good coffee at the office. They explained that is a good way to get some fresh air. Next time you sit at a coffee shop, forget about the marginal cost of coffee. Consider the full cost, which is more than you paid for, and enjoy it.

Is The Blonde Vanilla Latte Good

It has a silky and smooth texture, and unlike regular dark-roasted espresso, it does not have a bitter aftertaste. As a result of the naturally inherent sweetness in this espresso, the baristas using the new blonde roast are using less of the flavored syrup additions in the beverages they are creating for their customers.

Howard Schultz Joins The Team

Shortly after Siegels departure, Howard Schultz joined Starbucks in 1981.

Schultz had been a sales representative for a Swedish company that manufactured kitchen equipment and housewares. It was this very company from which Starbucks bought the drip-coffee makers they sold.

Noticing how large Starbucks orders were each month, he decided to visit. He was so impressed, he decided to pursue a career with the company. He was hired as head of marketing in 1982.

In the spring of 1983, Starbucks sent Schultz to Milan to attend an international housewares show. He was impressed by the coffeehouse culture in Italy and felt that they could do something similar at Starbucks.

Baldwin and Bowker, however, were not sold on the idea. They were happy with the success of the traditional model of business and didnt want to change things.

In other words, they saw no value in turning Starbucks into a café type place that would serve up coffee and other drinks.

Schultz was excited though. So rather than try to convince them, he decided to embark on his own business venture in Italy opening coffee shops. He left Starbucks in 1985.

His operations in Italy were successful. But his departure from Starbucks would be short-lived.

How Much Milk Is In A Venti Latte

The Battle Over Nonfat Milk Offerings

Starbucks pumpkin spice latte returns Tuesday with higher price tag

Speaking of customizing drinks, the early Starbucks stores werent quite as accommodating.

Howard Behar, an executive who came to Starbucks in 1989, was troubled to learn that many customers were requesting the option of nonfat milk for their lattés or cappuccinos.

But Schultz and his team were dogged in their stance that nonfat milk detracted from the authenticity of their Italian heritage. Nobody drank a nonfat cappuccino in Italy!

Behar felt that they should honor these customers requests. But Schultzs passion for the true experience was shared by store managers who protested to offering the nonfat option.

Nevertheless, when Schultz personally witnesses a customer leave over the lack of this option, he had a change of heart. And now, its estimated that half of the cappuccinos and lattés they sell are nonfat.

Some traditions need to die.

Coffee For Canadians By Canadians

In 2013, Starbucks Canada named a coffee for Canadians, by Canadians.

Upon creating a unique blond roast, the company turned to Canadian citizens to create the perfect name.

After going through 22,000 entries in a nationwide contest, they settled on True North Blend/Melange Nordique as the perfect name.

Coffeenomics: Finders Latte Line

Our Latte Line is the GDP-weighted index average, showing a correlation between the price of coffee and a countrys GDP. For example, at bottom left of the graph, you can see the correlation between a cheap tall latte and a weaker GDP in countries like Turkey, Egypt, Colombia and Argentina. Far right of the Latte Line, you can see Luxembourg with a high GDP and a more expensive coffee price.

However, within that trend, there are a few outliers, such as Monaco and Denmark. In Monaco, the cost of a tall latte is cheaper than you might expect, given its strong GDP. In the case of Denmark, you can see the sky-high cost of a coffee doesnt correlate to GDP in the same way it does in many other countries.

The Iconic Mermaid Once Showed Nipple

The famous Starbucks mermaid logo represents the seductive power and siren call of coffee. But youve probably noticed how the mermaids hair covers any hint of immodesty.

It wasnt always that way.

When they were still just a regional chain in 1970s Seattle, the Starbucks logo was much less demure. The mermaid not only showed nipple, but also had fully-exposed breasts.

While some of their Seattle customers werent crazy about it, the company didnt feel the need to address it until they began making deliveries. Envisioning how the larger logo would look on the side of a truck, they decided it was in the companys best interest to revise the logo.

Limited Space At This Starbucks Location

Welcome to the middle class, China: The $5 cup of Starbucks has arrived ...

Starbucks loses money when anyone sits at a table for more than 55minutes in this part of Manhattan. But that is not a problem, there are only 6 seats, with no outlets, and the Google maps data shows that the average person spends 25 minutes. This also suggests most consumers spend 5 minutes, and a few stay there for hours .

What Does Your Favorite Starbucks Drink Say About You

With so many delicious options on the Starbucks menu, choosing the perfect coffee has become a sport, and your favorite Starbucks drink says a lot about you. If a few years ago coffee was just a simple remedy for fatigue and sleepless nights, since the American giant transformed the way we drink this drink, coffee has become a ritual that involves a lot of flavors, toppings, and calories.

We all have a favorite drink at Starbucks and thats normal. But have you ever thought that what you order from Starbucks can also reflect your way of being?

American coffee

Those who prefer Americano coffee are not the kind of person who embraces every trend, and most of the time they refuse to embrace the Starbucks language. You like plain, old school coffee, without weird flavors and toppings that you cant pronounce. You dont like to complicate your existence with artificial sweeteners and invented names.

Espresso shot

You have a lot of things to do and dont stop until your Inbox is empty. Paradoxically, you probably wont be able to complete all the tasks you have on the list, because youve had another shot of Starbucks espresso and youve already started hearing colors.

Flat White

Those who always order a Flat White are typical hipsters, who knew about this drink before it got cool. Flat White, invented in Australia, is the ideal drink for those who love to discover new places or flavors.

Enter Baldwin Bowker And Siegel

Inspired by Peets operation in Berkeley, three academic-minded men with a passion for coffee and tea decided to open their own store in Seattle in 1971.

The first Starbucks was founded by Jerry Baldwin, Gordon Bowker, and Zev Siegel, and was located across the street from the historic Pike Place Market. They named it Starbucks after the first mate in Herman Melvilles classic novel .

They took on some of Peets roasting techniques to begin creating their own blends and by the early 1980s, they had opened four stores in Seattle.

Despite their success, it was during this time that Siegel decided to pursue other interests and left the company. Baldwin assumed the role of company president.

Countries Where Buying Starbucks Is The Most And Least Extravagant

Starbucks may raise prices, again

Most coffee drinkers in the U.S. have a sense of how pricey, or not, Starbucks seems. At an average of $2.75 at U.S. Starbucks outlets, a small hot latte is pricier than a regular cup of joe, even ordered from a coffee shop or restaurant. But its less costly than, say, a meal or an alcoholic drink when ordered out.

But how indulgent is Starbucks beyond our borders? To assess that, we took prices for the drink in 39 other countries and adjusted them to reflect the cost of other goods and services there compared with the U.S.

The results reveal that Starbucks is pricier, relatively speaking, in every country outside the U.S. But how much pricier it is varies a lot.

In some countries, a latte hits the wallet only a little harder than in the U.S. The froth-friendly nations include Australia, the U.K., New Zealand, and Canada. Here, Starbucks represents something less than a big indulgence.

But stepping up to the Starbucks counter in the most costly countries feels like a far bigger extravagance. Nothing matches the luxe indulgence of ordering a latte in Russia, where the tab would feel like spending $12 for the drink here at home. In the other pricier countries for Starbucks, including India, Indonesia, and Thailand, the sticker shock would be more akin to spending $7 or so at home.

Hack : Pay Half For Coffee By Ordering A French Press

Did it work? Yes. We went in with a couple of friends and asked for the French press, and our local Starbucks barista cheerfully accommodated our order. But she had to check on the details, since that store rarely does French press coffee anymore now that it has a Clover, a fancy single-cup brewing machine. That said, the French press we ordered costs around $8 for around 32 ounces about half the price of the per-cup cost if everyone ordered separately.

Starbucks Menu With Prices

Starbucks menu includes a huge range of whole-bean coffees, cafe lattes, hot chocolates, teas, fresh juices, brownies, bakewell tarts, cookies, sandwiches, and paninis.

However, the item that helped Starbucks build all this brand is its wide range of premium coffees like mocha or latte. The mocha or latte are one of the most selling coffees at Starbucks.

The Starbucks menu also offers you mixed drinks such as brews and wines after 4 P.M. The designated sizes in start bucks are not the same as youll find in a normal coffee shop.

At Starbucks the Small is called Tall, Medium is called Grande, Large is called Venti and Additional Large is called Trenta. Sounds unique, right? Remember the names, before you pay the visit.

The Starbucks menu prices are a little higher than other competitor chains, with prices ranging from $2 to $6, depending on the size and the type of drink you are buying. And sometimes, customers have to wait for a long time just to buy a cup of coffee. This is due to the fact of the popularity of the coffee chain.

So, without any further ado, lets check out the Starbucks menu.
