What Tea Is Good For Cancer

Does Essiac Tea Help Fight Cancer Or Is This Hype

Drinking hot tea increases cancer risk: Report | GMA

By Annie Price, CHHC

There are many herbal and inexpensive concoctions that people claim can help to fight cancer. One example is Essiac tea, a mixture of plant ingredients that may have some anti-carcinogenic effects, although this remains unproven.

What is this mysterious brown liquid? Essiac tea is a traditional Native American formula that was rediscovered by a cancer nurse from Canada named Rene Caisse in the 1920s. Apparently she perfected the formula through years of clinical research with her longtime colleague, Dr. Charles Brusch, once a personal physician to President John F. Kennedy.

What is Essiac tea good for? Acting as a tonic, its said to enable the body to effectively remove toxins and wastes, permitting for cellular renewal and revitalized health. While it has most notably been used for its anticancer effects, essiac may hold potential to help treat conditions including gastrointestinal diseases, diabetes and even AIDS too.

Chamomile Tea Lowers The Risk Of One Very Big Cancer

Everyone loves the taste of sweet, mild chamomile tea, and for anyone with insomnia, this tea can be a godsend. However, a recent study has everyone buzzing about what else this tiny little flower can do for us: Lower the risk of thyroid cancer.

As far back as Roman times chamomile has been used in extracts, tinctures, and teas to encourage a sense of calm, relaxation, and bring about more restful sleep. It was even used in ancient times to bring out the highlights in light-colored hair and even out skin tones. Chamomile is still used for all of these things even today! However, chamomile can do so much more for the body than simply lighten our hair and encourage good digestion.

A study recently published in the European Journal of Public Health showed that regular consumption of chamomile can greatly reduce the risk of developing thyroid cancer. Although thyroid cancer can usually be treated with radioactive iodine or surgery, you know the old saying: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Although numerous studies have been done with black tea or green tea and their relationship to disease, there have been no studies done regarding the consumption of herbal teas and disease to date.

In Germany, chamomile tea is approved for use to reduce swelling, stomach cramps, and as a sleep aide.

How Can Tea Help In Preventing Cancer

Amongst a wide range of biological activities, some of the predominant polyphenols that are found in green tea along with the thearubigins and theaflavins in black teas tend to have rich antioxidant properties. The available ingredients, including ECG & EGCG tend to feature significant free radical killing activity and help in protecting the cells in the body from potential DNA damage that might be caused by species of reactive oxygen.

The polyphenols in teas are known to inhibit cancer cell proliferation while inducing apoptosis in animal studies and lab studies. In other forms of animal studies as well as laboratory studies, tea catechins are known to inhibit angiogenesis as well as tumor cell invasiveness. Moreover, tea polyphenols can also help in protecting the damage caused due to UV B radiation. They might even help in modulating the function of the bodys immune system. To top it all, green teas have been observed to activate the detoxification enzymes in the body, including quinone reductase and glutathione S-transferase. These vital enzymes can help in providing protection against tumor development.

Tea Consumption And Cancers

The associations between tea consumption and the risk of major cancers are shown in Figures , , , and . For breast cancer, the overall RR for three cups increment per day of tea consumption was 1.02 with mild heterogeneity among studies . For colorectal cancer, the pooled RR for three cups increment per day was 0.98 with mild heterogeneity . For liver cancer, the overall RR for three cups increment per day was 0.91 with moderate heterogeneity . For prostate cancer, the overall RR for three cups increment per day was 1.02 with moderate heterogeneity . For stomach cancer, the overall RR for three cups increment per day was 0.98 with moderate heterogeneity .

Relative risk estimates of stomach cancer per 3 cups increase in tea consumption.

As shown by Figure and the P-value for nonlinearity, we found no evidence of nonlinear relationships between tea consumption and risk of cancers.

Doseresponse relations between tea consumption and relative risks of breast, colorectal, stomach, prostate cancer.

In the subgroup analysis, we pooled the studies into groups by sex, tea type, geographic region, and menopausal status for breast cancer. The results are shown in Table . We found that three cups of black tea consumption increment per day may be a risk factor for breast cancer . The result of the subgroup analysis of stomach cancer indicated that tea consumption was a preventive factor in women. However, only three studies were included in this subgroup.

Mixed Evidence On Cancer

Should You Use Essiac Tea For Cancer?

Research on the anticancer effects of Essiac tea has had conflicting results.

For example, one test-tube study showed that the tea had antioxidant properties and prevented damage to cells and DNA, which could potentially help protect against cancer .

Another test-tube study noted that Essiac tea blocked the growth of breast and leukemia cancer cells when administered in high concentrations .

There is also some anecdotal evidence that certain types of cancer have responded well to Essiac tea including one case report of a man who went into remission from prostate cancer and attributed it to the tea .

However, plenty of studies have found little to no effect of Essiac tea on cancer development, including one review of 17 animal studies that detected no anticancer properties .

Multiple other animal and test-tube studies have also shown that Essiac tea has no effect on cancer cells and, in some cases, may even stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells .

Additionally, because human studies are currently unavailable, more high-quality studies are needed to understand how Essiac tea may impact cancer development in the general population.

Summary

Animal and test-tube studies have had conflicting findings on the effects of Essiac tea on cancer cell growth and development. Human studies on its proposed effects are needed.

Drinking Essiac tea has been associated with numerous side effects.

Rooibos May Directly Kill Cancer Cells

Compared to other herbal teas, rooibos can even cause apoptosis , shown to affect more than 30 percent of cancerous cells.

This action is particularly strong for premalignant cells, where rooibos has been shown to target the genetically altered troublesome cells and give them a kick before they take hold.

Essiac Tea For Cancer

While cancer patients in the Western world spend millions of dollars each year on traditional slash, burn and poison treatments, there have been powerful natural protocols that have been helping the body heal itself through the use of herbs and other modalities for thousands of years. One formula that Native American healers have used for centuries goes by the modern name Essiac, and it has potent anti-cancer properties.

The History of Essiac Tea

Essiac tea can originally be linked to the Ojibwa Indians Tea of Life, an herbal remedy of the native tribes of Canada and the northern United States. As the story goes, Rene Caisse was a Canadian nurse in the 1920s when she obtained the information from an English woman who was cured of breast cancer by an herbal formula that an Ojibwa Indian had given her. That formula would eventually become Essiac .

I will not say you have a cure for cancer. But you have more evidence of a beneficial treatment for cancer than anyone in the world.

What is in Essiac Tea?

These days, the Essiac formula has been further developed by various natural health companies to include added ingredients which work with the original formula. There are four basic ingredients that are present in all Essiac formulas, however. They are:

Burdock Root: Burdock is known as a blood purifier which helps to remove toxins through the urinary, lymphatic and respiratory system

Some Cautions about Essiac Tea

A Concentrated Source Of Antioxidants

Green Tea To Prevent Breast Cancer, Does It Work?

Essiac contains high levels of the following antioxidants: flavones, anthraquinones, tannins and polysaccharides . Studies have shown that Essiac tea used at varying concentrations reduces the presence of free radicals by up to 84% . Free radicals can lead to DNA damage and trigger a series of adverse health responses.

In fact, pharmaceutical agencies manufacture drugs derived from these antioxidant sources. Adriamycin is chemotherapeutic drug designed to treat 13 various types of cancer and contains anthraquinones .

An even greater threat to cellular damage is superoxide radicals. Superoxide radicals have the ability to not only create cellular damage, but also to activate other free radicals . Plant-derived polysaccharides have been valued in traditional Chinese medicine for its role as a powerful antioxidant . These healthy polysaccharides prevent against oxidative damage in the body by scavenging dangerous superoxide radicals .

Health Benefits Of Tea: Herbal Teas

Made from herbs, fruits, seeds, or roots steeped in hot water, herbal teas have lower concentrations of antioxidants than green, white, black, and oolong teas. Their chemical compositions vary widely depending on the plant used.

Varieties include ginger, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, hibiscus, jasmine, rosehip, mint, rooibos , chamomile, and echinacea.

Limited research has been done on the health benefits of herbal teas, but claims that they help to shed pounds, stave off colds, and bring on restful sleep are largely unsupported.

Here are some findings:

  • Chamomile tea: Its antioxidants may help prevent complications from diabetes, like loss of vision and nerve and kidney damage, and stunt the growth of cancer cells.
  • Echinacea: Often touted as a way to fight the common cold, the research on echinacea has been inconclusive.
  • Hibiscus: A small study found that drinking three cups of hibiscus tea daily lowered blood pressure in people with modestly elevated levels.
  • Rooibos : A South African herb that is fermented. Although it has flavonoids with cancer-fighting properties, medical studies have been limited.

Secret Recipe Blocked Research

The origins of the recipe are debated because several of the herbs are not indigenous to North America and reportedly hadnt yet made it to the Americas through trade routes when Caisse first promoted the tea.

Originally, Caisse brewed three of the herbs into a tea and injected the other herb intramuscularly. No one but Caisse knew which herbs were brewed and which one was injected.

The secrecy of the recipe and preparation became a road block to scientific research and a source of controversy in later investigations.

Alternative Cancer Treatments Conspiracy

Caisse explained that her efforts to perform clinical research on the effectiveness of Essiac faced challenge as a result of nothing less than a conspiracy against finding a cure for cancer . Do you agree?

The cancer industry is comprised of a complex network of corporations which make profit from cancer patients seeking an end to their suffering. Pharmaceutical companies produce chemicals that are known to cause cancer as well as toxic cancer treatment drugs. In fact, AstraZeneca is a drug company which originally created National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Take note to the campaigns lack of drive to find a cure for the problem.

How Much It Costs

You can find green tea in health food shops, supermarkets, chemists and over the internet. Prices can vary depending on the amount you buy and where you buy it.

The quality or grade of green tea can also vary. Usually better quality green tea costs more. The best quality tea is made from the first leaf buds that come in the spring.

Antioxidants And Free Radicals

Green tea’s cancer-fighting reputation comes from its polyphenols, which are chemicals that have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants protect the cells in your body from free radicals, highly reactive molecules that speed the damage caused by chemicals in the environment or by aging, and that can lead to the development of cancer .

Free radicals can damage tissues in many ways, one of which is by directly damaging DNA. Since damage to DNA is what leads to the development of cancer, researchers have given a lot of attention to nutrients that can neutralize free radicals before they do their damage.

EGCG is one of the antioxidants found almost exclusively in green tea.

Green Tea To Treat Cancer

There is very little research into whether green tea or green tea extract can help treat cancer.

In 2012 an American study looked at taking a green tea extract called polyphenon E. They gave it to 42 patients. They all had a type of leukaemia called chronic lymphocytic leukaemia . The people in the trial were not taking any other kind of treatment.

The researchers found that in a third of people the number of leukaemic cells lessened. Their lymph nodes also shrank. This was a small trial but the results were promising. We need larger trials before we will know whether green tea or its extracts can help people with cancer.

In another review study in 2018 researchers looked at using green tea and turmeric in people with CLL. They found limited evidence and mixed results that it might work.

Research has shown a possible interaction between green tea and the drug bortezomib . This early research suggested that green tea might stop Velcade from working well. But we need much more research to find out if green tea has the same effect on humans.

Speak to your doctor if you are taking Velcade and you want to drink green tea. You might have to avoid green tea or the extract EGCG. Some people take EGCG as a supplement in liquid or capsules.

General Health Benefits Of Black Tea

6 Cups of Green Tea for Prostate Cancer

Like green tea, black tea also contains antioxidants and has similar health benefits. Mentioned below are some of the health benefits of black tea :

  • Helps in reducing the risk of stroke
  • Helps in reducing inflammation in the body
  • Helps to improve cardiovascular/heart health
  • Helps to improve gum and teeth health
  • Helps in reducing blood pressure
  • Helps in reducing diabetes/lowering blood sugar levels

Unlike green tea, a limited number of human intervention studies have been carried out on regular intake of black tea to demonstrate its anti-cancer benefits/chemopreventive potential. Some of these studies are summarized below.

Limited Research On Effectiveness

Current research on Essiac tea is limited, and most available studies are in animals and individual cells in a lab rather than in humans.

Additionally, though its effects on cancer have been studied, research on other health claims of Essiac tea such as its detoxifying and immune-boosting properties is lacking.

In fact, many of the purported health benefits of Essiac tea stem solely from anecdotal reports.

Furthermore, the product has not been approved for the treatment of cancer or other medical conditions by the FDA .

It may also be associated with numerous side effects, including nausea, vomiting, frequent urination and increased bowel movements .

Therefore, more research on Essiac teas potential effects on health is needed before it can be recommended.

Summary

Current research on the effects of Essiac tea is limited to animal and test-tube studies, as well as anecdotal reports.
