In it, participants drank equal amounts of alcohol in either vodka or bourbon forms. Thirty three percent of the bourbon drinkers reported next-day pain while only three percent of vodka drinkers had hangovers. “One can clearly see,” Dr. Nguyen says, “that the darker liquor had more of an impact than the light.”

Can You Make Flavored Simple Syrup

Yes, you can! Flavored syrups are fun as well. Here are a few flavoring options:

  • Cinnamon: Add a few sticks of cinnamon to the syrup when its hot, and let steep for a few hours or overnight. Strain and store.
  • Herbal syrup: Springs of rosemary, lemon thyme, lemon verbena, sage, mint, and/or lemon balm leaves all make wonderful additions to simple syrup. Add a small handful of the fresh herbs to the hot syrup, steep for about 30 minutes, then strain and store.
  • Vanilla syrup: Add a split vanilla bean to the simmering syrup. Let the vanilla bean cool in the syrup. Strain and store.
  • Ginger syrup: Cut slices from a 3-inch piece of ginger root and add to the simmering syrup. Let the ginger slices cool in the syrup. Strain and store.
  • Honey or Demerara sugar: Use the same 1 to 1 one formula of honey or sugar to water. Honey offers a light floral quality while demerara sugar brings a deeper, richer note than a syrup made with granulated sugar.

Does Long Island Iced Tea Taste Like Alcohol

Long Island Iced Tea is a drink made up of cola, all the white liquors, Triple Sec and lemon juice. It mainly tastes like cola with orange and lemon juice added to it. Theres no way to tell whether the drink contains tequila, gin, rum or vodka and you certainly cant pick up any taste of tequila, gin, or rum.

Lets Do Some Cocktail Math

With no less than five spirits, a LIIT contains about 2 1/2-3 shots of alcohol, approximately 22 percent. Lets do the math: 60ml/2oz of high proof spirits plus 15ml/ half an ounce of Triple Sec.

Long Island cocktail has a reputation for packing a wallop like a donkey kick . This could be down to the fact that some bartenders pour very generous measures when making a LIIT.

But the real reason is that this drink is so darned drinkable, so addictive, that you finish it quickly and want a second one the minute the glass is empty. You have been warned!

Swap Out The Triple Sec For Orange Liqueur

We dont use triple sec, Trickett says, instead they use Gran Torres orange liqueur. It adds more depth because, instead of being based around neutral grain spirits, its based around Spanish brandy with bitter Seville oranges. It has more depth as opposed to floor cleaner orange. You dont have to use that specific brand, but do play around with other brandy-based orange liqueurs like Grand Marnier or Mandarine Napoleon. If you this is the only tip you follow, youll still wind up with a much more grown-up and balanced Long Island.

How Strong Is Long Island Iced Tea

Long Island Ice Tea | Emeril Lagasse

The five liquors make Long Island iced tea seem like a strong drink, but if you do the math, it’s not terribly potent compared to other cocktails. When you pour 80-proof liquors, 60-proof triple sec, and top it with 2 ounces of soda, its alcohol content falls in the 16 percent ABV range. That is about the same as a strong rum and Coke and half the strength of a gin martini.

Ingredients In Long Island Iced Tea

When there are equal parts of five liquors in a cocktail, one liquor should not overpower any of the others. The goal is to achieve balance in the cocktaileven one that packs as much of a punch as the Long Island Iced Tea. To do that, you’ll need quality spirits, but not necessarily high-end spirits.

Top shelf bottles, or small-batch artisanal spirits from the local distillery, can be used in this recipe, but their nuances will get lost in the mix. The LITas a bar server would call itis perfectly happy with the tried and true middle shelf brands of these spirits.

  • Tequila: Tequila Blanco is an unaged tequila that’s also known as silver or white tequila. Espolòn Tequila Blanco and El Jimador Silver Tequila are quality value rums that will work well in an LIT.
  • Rum: Captain Morgan White Rum or Bacardi White Rum work really well in a Long Island Iced Tea. They’re good rums that don’t break the bank.
  • Vodka: An LIT doesn’t need your favorite vodka, just a well-made vodka, like Tito’s Handmade Vodka or New Amsterdam Vodka.
  • Gin: Standards such as Beefeaters or Tangueray are perfect for Long Island Iced Tea, as is New Amsterdam Gin.
  • Triple Sec: Triple Sec is a sweet, orange flavored liqueur. Cointreau is one brand of well-known triple sec, but feel confident using one that has a lower price tag such as DeKuyper. If Grand Marnier is all you have in your liquor cabinet, it’s a fine alternative even though it’s a blend of cognac and triple sec, not straight triple sec.

The Story Behind The Long Island Iced Tea

According to legend, the Long Island Iced Tea was originally named the Old Man Bishop after a gentleman who created the drink during Prohibition its sweetness making it difficult for teetotalers to identify it as alcoholic. But history always has multiple perspectives bartender Robert Butt claims that it was he who invented the drink in 1972 while participating in a cocktail contest at the Oak Beach Inn in Long Island, N.Y.

Known as one of the booziest and most iconic cocktails coming in at a whopping 22 percent ABV the Long Island Iced Tea combines five different spirits in a symphony of flavors. Equal amounts of vodka, rum, tequila, gin, and triple sec are joined by simple syrup, lemon juice, and a splash of cola to create a unique beverage that belies its strength.

The History Of Long Island Iced Tea

The time of origin of the famous cocktail is not exactly defined. Some claim that the Long Island Iced Tea has its origin in Long Island near Kingsport, Tennessee. During the American alcohol prohibition in 1920 a bishop there mixed the well-known ingredients into a drink. The bishop’s son, called Ransom Bishop, then gradually improved the recipe and made the drink regionally known.

Contrary to this theory, Robert Butt, also called “Rosebud”, claims to be the inventor of Long Island Iced Tea to this day. He writes on his official website of the Long Island Iced Tea. about how the cocktail was created. According to this, he invented the cocktail in 1972 while working as a bartender at the Oak Beach Inn on Long Island, New York State. At a cocktail contest, he mixed the well-known ingredients with cola and, by his own account, landed a hit. By the mid-1970s, the cocktail was probably already being served all over the island. In the 1980s the drink was then known all over the world.

Robert Butt writes that the cocktail became so famous also because it looks so harmless. Although the drink looks like ordinary iced tea, it contains five different spirits. If you ask someone at a party for Long Island Iced Tea, you will hear some funny stories.

  • Vodka, tequila, or gin: Leave one of these out and double one of the other liquors. For example, if you dont have gin double the tequila. But try to have at least 3 of the 4 main liquors.
  • White rum: Use another type of rum if you dont have white on hand. Aged adds a sophistication to the flavor. Or again, you can leave it out and double one of the other liquors.

Where Does It Come From

As with a lot of cocktails, the true inventor of the Long Island Iced Tea is up for debate.

A popular theory is that a man called Robert Rosebud Butt who came from Long Island, New York devised the boozy cocktail as part of a competition back in the 70s.

Theres another claim that the Long Island Iced Tea dates back to prohibition and hails from Tennessee from an Island called Long Island, unsurprisingly, in Kingston.

The recipe was different and included whiskey and maple syrup but was later fine-tuned by his son to include cola and lemon.

Whichever version you believe, a Long Island Iced Tea is firmly placed in the worlds most favourite cocktails.

Youd think that with all the different types of alcohol in it, the Long Island Iced Tea shouldnt work, but it does, and its a delicious powerhouse of a cocktail!

Which Glass Do I Use To Serve The Long Island Iced Tea

Long Island Iced Tea Recipe

The right cocktail glass is a must for a good cocktail. After all, you want to conjure up a special moment with a cocktail. The shape of the glass is also decisive for the taste. Each glass shape has different effects on the content. For example, a bulbous shape like wine glasses allows more air to get into the liquid. A thick base, like a tumbler or old-fashioned glass, means that the glass is heated less by hand and the contents stay cold longer.

Long Island Iced Tea is usually served in a tall beaker, the so-called highball glass. The content of this type of glass is usually 240 to 350 millilitres. The high glass brings out the colour of Long Island Iced Tea particularly well. In addition, there is enough ice to keep the drink nice and cold.
