Ingredients For This Soothing Latte
To make our soothing latte we’re using a simple list of ingredients, most of which I bet you already have on hand. Here’s what you’ll need to make this recipe:
- Bagged green tea: any variety will do! It can be plain green tea, jasmine green tea or even a flavored green tea. It’s up to you!
- Plant-based milk: I like to use almond or coconut milk as they get nice and creamy, but it’s up to you. Rice, oat, soy, and cashew will also work well.
- Raw honey: since green tea has a naturally bitter taste, adding a touch of sweetness can really help. I love using raw honey, but you can also use maple syrup, coconut sugar or even a zero-calorie sweetener like monk fruit extract or stevia.
- Ground ginger: for a little kick and zing!
- Ground cinnamon: for a warming and cozy taste!
- Boiling water: to steep the tea in and make this latte extra hot.
Matcha Green Tea Bags At Hana Tea House
Matcha translates into powdered-tea. By the very definition, Matcha is a powdered tea. Matcha powder consists of 100% of nutrition-packed leaves that have been harvested and processed laboriously into the familiar green powder we all know of. It takes 60 minutes to produce just 30g of matcha tea powder.
Matcha tea bags, on the other hand, are a blend mostly consisting of loose green tea leaves. They are referred to as Matcha tea bags because they are mixed with just 2% of pure matcha powder.
So what is the difference between matcha tea bags and matcha powder? The real difference between matcha teabags and matcha powder is the actual matcha content. Matcha powder is 100% of pure matcha versus just 2% matcha tea powder content in matcha tea bags. What many people dont realise is that the tea bags are mostly a blend of green tea.
Because of this many customers looking to include matcha tea in to their daily routine end up paying a premium for what is essentially normal green tea also a great nutritious drink, but not as potent as matcha powder.
Some people still choose to use Matcha green tea bags because it is a more convenient, quick, easy way to prepare a drink, and it is comparatively cheaper.

How To Make Matcha Green Tea
Youll find my full matcha green tea recipe and measurements below, but because there are a few tricks to making matcha, I wanted to break it down step by step. Heres what you need to do:
First, sift it into a small bowl or mug. Matcha clumps very easily, so I always recommend sifting it before you add any water. Otherwise, it will be difficult to get the tea to disperse evenly in the liquid, and your drink will be lumpy.
Then, pour in a small amount of hot water, and whisk.;But wait! This isnt the circular whisking required for making baking recipes or scrambled eggs. Instead, whisk vigorously from side to side either directly back and forth or in a zigzag pattern to evenly disperse the powder in the water and create a foamy layer on top. If you whisk in a circular motion, your tea wont foam.
Finally, top it off with more hot water or steamed milk. Traditional matcha green tea is made with just green tea powder and water, but you can also easily make a latte by finishing your drink with steamed milk. I love to make mine with almond milk, coconut milk, or homemade oat milk. Whisk again until foamy, sweeten to taste, and enjoy!
What Is Matcha Powder
Matcha powder is made of special ground green tea leaves.
The tea shrubs grow in the shade in Japan and the leaves are processed differently and ground to a fine powder. This is the major difference to regular green tea.
Matcha powder has a huge significance in Japan. Special tea houses prepare ceremonial teas in front of the customer.
The powder is also used in foods such as mochi rice cakes, regular cakes and ice creams.

Matcha Teabags Are Easy To Counterfeit
I mentioned earlier that teabags are often of poor quality. This can happen with pretty much any tea type, and it happens to most teas.
You see, Matcha is a very specific type of green tea. Its grown in the shade, picked at the right time, steamed to prevent it from oxidizing at all.
This gives it a very green and fresh flavor that no green tea on earth can come close to.
Then the tea leaves are de-veined and the stems are removed. This ensures that youre going to get the best, most smooth cup of Matcha you possibly can because there are no severe differences between the leaves.
Once thats done, the leaves are dried and rolled through a stone mill. This results in a very, very fine powder thats actually the Matcha youre buying.
So theres a low of work going into this tea, and mixing something else into it like powdered regular green tea is going to show up on most folks taste buds.
However, most folks dont really know the real flavor of Matcha since its a taste you really need to allow yourself time to get used to.
If you want to experiment, you can take one of the teabags, if you have a Matcha teabag, and open it onto a paper towel.
If its bright green, smells a little like grass, looks almost like green flour or baby powder and hasnt clumped then its good, fresh Matcha.
But if its a darker green, or dulled green, or even worse has a yellowish tinge then your Matcha is most probably blended with something else.
Latte Ingredients And Notes
Matcha Powder: When you buy matcha powder there are two types youll find. Ones that include added sugars and other ingredients, and ones that are purely matcha powder. Get the type that is pure matcha powder, no extra stuff! You can find it online, Whole Foods, or Asian markets.
Dairy-Free Milk: I used unsweetened almond milk for my recipe, but I also recommend oat milk, soy milk, or a light coconut milk. Oat milk and soy milk will allow the flavor of the matcha to shine through. Whereas youll taste an undertone of coconut if you choose to go with coconut milk.
Maple Syrup: You can add more or less than the one tablespoon of maple syrup in the recipe. However, I recommend starting with one, tasting, and adding more if you think it needs more sweetness.
Vanilla Extract: The vanilla extract gives a slight hint of vanilla flavor that youll find in the Starbucks version.

Differences Between Matcha Teabags And Matcha Powder
Matcha in teabags and powder form seems to be a bit of a debate lately. Some say the teabag version is worth it, mush less hassle and just generally easier to work with.
Others maintain that true Matcha will always need to be frothed with actual Matcha powder, and theres no need to bring teabags into this.
Thats also the stance Im supporting, so lets get into the main differences between powder Matcha and teabag Matcha. Just so were all on the same page.

What Is A Matcha Whisk
A matcha whisk is created from a single piece of bamboo and also known as a chasen. It has tines that spring back and add gentle movement to the whisking process, which is key to achieving those essential flavors and textures.;
While it may be tempting to reach for the metal whisk already in your kitchen, there are better alternatives to try out first.;
Not only does matcha not mix very well with metals, which can negate some of the great flavors, but a metal whisk can be too aggressive and heavy for your matcha powder, which can make it very difficult to get the texture that adds so much to the matcha drinking experience.;
Move your matcha whisk in a w or m pattern to ensure full oxygen incorporation and mixing. It is important to note that not all of the matcha will be fully incorporated into the water. The frothing is the best way to ensure that your water and matcha powder mix together properly, but if you find that there is still matcha powder at the bottom of the bowl or the cup after proper mixing, it means the froth has reached saturation point and no more matcha powder can be mixed in.;

Brew At The Right Temperatures
Stronger teas such as oolong teas and black teas should be brewed under higher temperatures to ensure they extract all the flavors and content right. Therefore, by brewing them using boiling water, they will extract all the content.
However, lighter teas such as white tea, fruit-mixed teas, and green tea, only need hot water for them to steep right. Using boiling water for these teas will make the flavor overly intense, and they will be bitter.
