Do You Use Coffee Or Espresso For A Pumpkin Spice Latte

DIY Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe Save $ and Calories!

You can use either. I have a coffee maker at home, and I have an espresso machine. Whatever youd like to use, go ahead and brew it right into your pumpkin milk. For this post, I used coffee. If you dont have one of these pod-type coffee makers, just brew your coffee and add it to the glass .

Finish off your pumpkin spice latte with a couple of splashes of cream , and a teaspoon or two of sugar. Stir to combine.

Now you know how to make a pumpkin spice latte! You can drink it like this, or you can add a little bit of whipped cream . And be sure to sprinkle some nutmeg on top.

I did a little research and found that if you buy this at Starbucks, the calorie count for a nonfat Pumpkin Spice Latte is 260. My recipe computes to 152 calories. So you get to save money AND calories!

And there you go! No lines, no weird syrups, and perfectly delicious for a chilly fall morning. See why I was so excited? Love.

How We Selected Products

Although we fancy ourselves quite the PSL experts, we concede that there are, in fact, others who are more qualified. So, we used a multi-step process for this story. First, we researched the pumpkin spice market itself, which is booming, according to Yahoo and Nielson. For example, in 2019, pumpkin-flavored foods wracked up $511 million in sales, and Nielson reports that “From cosmetics to marinades to oral hygiene, the presence of the distinct orange squash pops up just about everywhere.”

Knowing the market agrees with our love of all things pumpkin, we brought in experts to speak about the many ways PSL inspires our best autumn lives. Esther Parkhurst, Sr. Director of Product Design & Trends at Lowe’s, said that consumers are “continuing to take on projects that help them enjoy their homes more” and looking for more ways to incorporate fall vibes in their day-to-day lives.

Rounding out the panel of experts, we teamed up with four fashion-focused experts who you’ll meet below!

Pumpkin Spice Lattes are the unofficial beverage of fall, and who are we to argue with that? The warm flavors in my homemade pumpkin pie spice blend pair perfectly with cooler temperatures . . . even if in my area cooler temperatures still mean flip flop weather.

Although Starbucks made the pumpkin spice latte famous, I prefer to make my own version at home for three reasons:

  • I dont have to change out of my PJs or stand in line
  • My homemade version costs less
  • I can use wholesome ingredients.
  • This recipe blends cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, vanilla, and my secret ingredient to bring snuggly autumnal delight to your coffee drinking experience.

I hope you love it as much as my husband and I do, and that it tides you over until Peppermint Mocha and Eggnog Latte season.

    Assemble The Pumpkin Spice Latte

Make some strong coffee or espresso! Pour this hot coffee into a warm coffee mug and gently top off with the hot frothy pumpkin spice mixture. Briefly stir with a spoon.

Leave enough room in the coffee mug to top the pumpkin spice latte.

Sprinkle a pinch of pumpkin pie spice over the whipped cream topping. Grab your warm mug, serve immediately, and enjoy this PSL recipe in the comfort of your own home!

A Few Notes About The Ingredients:

    • Coffee – Iced lattes are traditionally made with shots of espresso, however I realize not everyone has an espresso machine in their home kitchen. Instead, substitute the espresso with strong brewed coffee or cold brew. This will create a more concentrated caffeinated beverage, similar to espresso. Weaker coffees will make a more watery tasting iced latte.
    • Milk – Your favorite milk to use in coffee will work here. You can even use a non dairy milk, like almond or oat milk, if preferred.
    • Ice – I use coffee ice cubes to prevent the drink from becoming watered down, but regular ice cubes will also work just fine. To make coffee ice cubes, brew a cup of strong coffee and allow it to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, pour the coffee into an ice cube tray and freeze overnight. Then, use the cubes in all of your favorite iced coffee beverages!
    • Pumpkin cream cold foam – Cold foam is the perfect finishing touch for any iced coffee beverage that youd like to make a little bit more indulgent. No better way to celebrate the fall season than topping your pumpkin spice latte with a dollop of cold foam!

    Homemade Pumpkin Spice Lattes Are

    • EASY. Were talking 6 fridge and pantry staple ingredients pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, sugar, milk vanilla, and coffee or espresso combined to make a cozy, homemade drink in less than 5 minutes.
    • Customizable. Dont have an espresso machine? No problem. Use strongly-brewed coffee instead, which, spoiler alert: I might like better than the espresso version!
    • Cheap. Think spending $5-7 on a coffee shops PSL sounds insane? Thats because it is! My homemade version can be made for way less.
    • Healthier. A short, non-fat, no whip Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks has 24 grams of sugar. Thats crazy and not just because nobody orders a short, nonfat, no whip PSL from Starbucks, right? My homemade PSL has less than 13 grams of sugar.
    • Kid-friendly. If your child wants in on a little pumpkin spice action like Mom and Dad, give it to him or her with this warm drink made without espresso or coffee. Lincoln went bananas for it and has asked for a mug every single day since Friday!

I cant tell you the last time I had a pumpkin spice latte from a coffee shop for one they cant guarantee theyre gluten-free, two I get annoyed that theyre only available for a limited time and three they just dont taste very good in my opinion. Way too artificial and sickly sweet, plus theres zero pumpkin involved.

Take it from me, spend 5 minutes on this lightly sweetened, creamy, pumpkin spice pumpkin containing! latte on a cool and crisp fall morning and youll never go back!

Heres what youll need to make this pumpkin spice latte recipe:

    • Pumpkin, of course! A few tablespoons of canned pumpkin puree enhance the lattes creamy texture and add essential pumpkin flavor.

Making Pumpkin Spice Latte At Home

Best Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe To Make At Home

Wed be remiss not to mention one more advantage of making the PSL at home: Our version actually has pumpkin in it. When we originally created this recipe, Starbucks version of the PSL didnt contain any real pumpkin. Our recipe originated with Kathryn, a core writer in the early days of Kitchn. She included a touch of pumpkin for delicious and full-bodied pumpkin spice flavor.

An at-home PSL is also cheaper than those coffee shop drinks. As Kathryn says, For those of us on a budget, those little cups of spicy goodness can add up. Making your own at home will not only save you money, but you can also enjoy them year-round. In addition, you have more control over the ingredients , so you can tweak the recipe to your liking.

Especially if you like extra whipped cream. We wont tell.

The Secret To The Fluffiest Pumpkin Pancakes

There are some recipes that you always come back to, these pumpkin pancakes are that kind of recipe. These pumpkin pancakes are simple to make and call on ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

To make them, you will need pumpkin puree. You can use canned puree or homemade pumpkin puree. If youve never made pumpkin puree from scratch before, its easy! Heres our simple tutorial for how to do it.

We like our pancakes to be fluffy and light, have you seen our essential pancake recipe, yet? Well, that recipe was the stepping off point for these easy pumpkin pancakes.

There are two tricks for the fluffiest pancakes:

  • Mix the dry and wet ingredients separately. Then when youre ready to cook, slowly stir the dry ingredients into the wet. Once you see most of the large lumps of flour disappear, youre done. No more mixing required. We use the same approach when making quick breads and muffins.
  • Use the right amount of leavener. In this recipe, we are using baking powder and baking soda to get nice, tall fluffy pancakes.
  • Tips For Making Creamy Oat Milk

Dont forget these simple tips and tricks for getting perfect oat milk every time:

    • Dont soak your oats. Unlike homemade nut milk, youll want to be sure you do not let the rolled oats soak in the water before blending them. This can make the oat milk slimy.
    • Be sure not to over blend. Over blending the oats and water together can also create a slimy texture in the oat milk. Just give the oats and water a quick blend on high so theyre combined.
    • Do not use steel cut oats. Rolled oats are truly the way to go when making homemade oat milk perfectly creamy.

  • Ingredients For A Real Food Pumpkin Spice Latte

Pumpkin Spice Latte | easy, homemade recipe!

I like using raw, grass-fed milk, but not everyone can have dairy. This coffee recipe is naturally gluten-free, but you can also make it dairy-free. Sub coconut milk, almond milk, oat milk, or macadamia milk. These are easy to find in the store, but homemade nut milk is cheaper and less watered down.

I use a half-teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, but you can use your own blend of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg if you dont have pie spice on hand. It tastes similar to chai, but without the cardamom or black pepper. The pure vanilla extract rounds out the warming spices in this coffee drink.

How To Make A Pumpkin Spice Latte:

The first thing youll do is make the spiced pumpkin milk.

Start with the milk. You can use any sort of milk youd like. I usually use nonfat milk because Im always trying to lighten things up. Honestly, its the best tasting with whole milk because its so rich and creamy. Try alternative milk like soy milk, almond milk or coconut milk too. Its completely up to you.

Add 2 tablespoons of pumpkin puree to one half cup of milk. Make sure you use plain, unsweetened pumpkin puree since youll be adding sugar to the recipe. Add a little brown sugar, vanilla and pumpkin pie spice. Whisk it all together and put it in the microwave until its hot and steamy. If you dont like to use the microwave, you can do this on the stove instead.
