Does Black Currant Juice Have Any Medicinal Uses
Historically, blackcurrant juice was used as “strengthening medicine” and to prevent colds. As I’ve written before, that strengthening “medicine” taste was probably the result of the fact that sugar was expensive and not added to the juice. Without any sweetener to round of its taste, it’s … well strengthening…
Both the berries and the leaves have been use for a long time in traditional medicine. Usually by making tea of both. But for those who didn’t like tea, it was common to heat black currant juice to counteract colds and other illnesses.
Cooked/heated Black Currant Juice Is More Difficult
You can cook blackberry juice too, but if you intend to cook your own juice, you should be aware of that the nutrients that black currants contain can be partially lost.
However, cooking does’t change the taste. So cooked blackcurrant juice is just as tasty as the cold juice.
Cooked juices are usually more sweet, because of the added sugar.
What Are The Health Benefits Of Blackcurrant Leaves
Drinking black currant leaf tea may provide additional benefits, slightly different that those from the fruits. Unlike the fruits, leaves are not rich in anthocyanins, but still have a high anti oxidative properties because of other compounds. Black currant leaf tea is often used for detox, as it may have diuretic effect and help with minor urinary problems. They also have a high level of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

What Are Black Currants
Black currants , popular in Eastern Europe and Russia, come from a perennial plant native to central and northern Asia.
This small shrub grows to 1-2m in height and it has alternate leaves, 3-5cm long and broad, with a serrated edge. Resistant to cold, you can find black currant shrubs growing spontaneously in woods. Its flowers are yellow green on the outside and reddish on the inside, with 4-6mm in diameter.
Black currant fruits and leaves are harvested after complete maturing of the fruits, small edible berries presenting a very dark purple colour.
Black Currant tea infusion first brought to the public attention in Europe by the abbot Bailley de Montaran of the Dijon Monastery, and so has been used since the Middle Ages as a medicinal tea.
During World War II, in the UK, it was hard to find most fruits rich in vitamin C, such as oranges. Since black currant berries are very rich in vitamin C and are well suited to the British climate, it only made sense that the government should promote its prodution during wartime.
In the US, currant farming was banned in the early 1900s and so black currants became a rare fruit. This ban was enforced because black currant farming was considered a threat to the logging industry.
Black Currants Today
Nowadays, in some states the ban has been lifted and as a result black currants can once again regain their lost popularity.
Lets find out what other health benefits black currant tea can offer you.
Why Do People Take Black Currant
Although more study is needed, limited research suggests that black currant might help:
- Lower total cholesterol, lower triglyceride levels, and increase HDL “good” cholesterol
- Lessen muscle fatigue after repetitive tasks
- Help relieve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis such as joint pain, stiffness, and tenderness this may lessen the need for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and may improve function.
- Improve poor circulation from conditions such as peripheral artery disease
- Treat open angle glaucoma
Some women take black currant seed oil, or other sources of gamma-linolenic acid, to try to treat symptoms of:
There is not enough evidence to prove that black currant helps with menstruation-related symptoms or these other health conditions.
Optimal doses of black currant have not been set for any condition. Quality and active ingredients in supplements may vary widely from maker to maker. This makes it hard to set a standard dose.

What Is Black Currant Tea
Black currant tea, often written as blackcurrant tea is a caffeine-free herbal infusion made from the black currant plant scientifically known as Ribes nigrum. While the fruits have to be dried for the preparation, leaves can be used in both fresh and dried forms. It contains vitamin C, phytonutrients, gamma-linoleic acid and because of its medicinal properties it has found immense popularity from the historical ages.
Black Currant Juice Is Packed With Goodness
You find nutrients like vitamin C but also vitamin E and large amounts of antioxidants in the black currant juice. Just like the “real-stuff”, the fresh black currants.
Black currants have even higher levels of antioxidants than blueberries and three times as much vitamin C content than oranges.
The high fiber content helps our digestive system and that’s good for your stomach. I can recommend our article named Fibers: How To Use Them For Your Benefit if you want to know more about dietary fibers.
The juice has a smooth and tart taste that I found both delicious and strengthening .
Black currant juice is usually quite musty and very tasty. If you make it yourself I recommend you try a more “chunky” version.
In Sweden we have a variety of the juice called black currant “saft”. It’s usually more diluted and therefor has less actual black currants in it. But it still manages to have the same amazing black currant flavor.
Black currant “saft” is more often than not favored by children and is a very common drink in children’s birthday partys. I found â³ #ad. Try it out!
Unfortunately, the juice often contains quite a lot of sugar, which is not that healthy. We usually dilute it a bit more than what’s recommended by the manufacturer so that we bring down the sugar intake per mug. Black Currant has a strong enough taste so you hardly notice the extra water.
I’ve long since decided that it’s the black currant flavor that our children love and not the sweet sugar…
