Ginger is all the rage in my apartment at the moment, from making homemade ginger chips to homemade ginger juice, and now this homemade ginger powder. This post takes you through two methods of drying and making ginger powder from fresh ginger and the leftover ginger pulp from juicing.
Recently I made a massive batch of Ginger Juice and was left with a big pile of leftover pulp. Now you know how much I try to avoid the unnecessary wasting of any ingredient. So, having already figured out that dehydrating is the key to using leftover nut milk pulp, I thought it would be the perfect answer to what to do with ginger pulp too.
In fact, following on from my Homemade Turmeric Powder post, I decided that Id try two methods for making organic ground ginger. The first method uses leftover ginger pulp, and the other one follows the same process as I used with the turmeric fresh, thinly sliced ginger. Im happy to say that the results have been amazing!

How Do I Reheat Ginger Tea
You may be tempted to use the microwave, but dont! Microwaves can overheat the tea very easily. Too hot, and youll kill the beneficial microbes in the raw honeywhich means youll lose a lot of the benefits. Instead, warm it in a small saucepan on low heat just enough to dissolve the honey.

Are There Any Side Effects Of Drinking Ginger Tea
No, ginger, and more specifically ginger tea, has no severe side effects. The catch here for you is to not binge on ginger and err on the side of caution in certain situations.

People have long linked ginger with relieving that icky feeling of nausea and helping you keep your cookies down. And honestly, even though more reliable studies need to happen before we can give it a definitive yes, there does appear to be some truth behind the claim.

How To Know The Ginger Is Ready
No matter which method you use, what youre looking for is completely dry ginger. It needs to be a crunchy kind of dry that snaps rather than bends.
Any moisture left in the ginger will cause it to become paste-like when ground, instead of a powder. It will also impact the shelf life so make sure theres no bend to the ginger before moving to the next step.
You can use the ginger slices, as is, to make homemade ginger tea too!
GRINDING THE DRIED GINGER
You can follow the next step for both methods.
Place the dried ginger slices or dried ginger pulp into a grain/seed grinder or into a food processor/blender.
Grind the dried ginger into powder.
Its best to sieve the powder to collect any larger pieces which you can then grind again.
Youll be left with a super-fine ground ginger powder that you can then transfer into an airtight glass jar and store for around six months. You could also store it in the freezer for even longer likely 12 months or more.

Here is an easy-to-follow recipe for making your own ginger tea. Youll need:
- 4 to 6 thin slices of peeled, raw ginger
- 2 cups of water
- juice from half of a lime or lemon, and honey or agave nectar to taste
First, wash and scrub the ginger root. Then, peel the ginger and slice thinly. Fill a medium pot with 2 cups of water. Place the ginger slices in the water and let boil gently for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on how strong and spicy you like your tea.
Remove from heat. Add lime or lemon juice and honey to taste, if desired.
You can also make ginger tea with milk. Boil your ginger root slices in 1 cup of water for 10 minutes, then remove from heat and add 2 cups of milk. Simmer the milk and ginger for five minutes. Serve in your favorite mug.

Using Ginger Juice Pulp
Whenever I make Ginger Juice, I save the pulp into teaspoon-sized servings in an ice-cube tray. Once frozen, I pop them into a silicone bag and use them as needed.
When making this tea, remove 1-2 tsp-sized pieces of pulp from the freezer and place it in a tea strainer.
Pour the boiling water over the pulp and then leave to steep for 5-10 minutes. The flavor of ginger pulp tea will differ from that using fresh ginger. Not only because of the change in the steeping method, but also the texture of the ginger.
Once steeped, add lemon slices and honey and enjoy your honey ginger tea!

I buy my fresh ginger root from the produce section of my regular grocery store. Id love to grow my own, but alas, unless Southern Indiana suddenly becomes tropical , that isnt going to happen!
I buy my ginger root in bulk, and then freeze it. I just put the whole root in a large glass food storage container, and take it out as needed. There is no real need to truly defrost the ginger rootjust put it out on the counter for about five minutes, and then youll be able to easily slice through it with a sharp knife.
