Choosing hair products especially when youre in front of a store shelf full of them is generally an exercise in reading and smelling.
Because it absolutely has to smell good, but you also want it to leave you with great hair consistently.
When it comes to products with tea tree oil, the smell is fresh and clean. Its a little reminiscent of peppermint or eucalyptus, and can be found in all sorts of hair care products.
But like many hair product ingredients, the effects of tea tree oil may be a mystery to you.
How To Use It
If youve never used tea tree oil before, start by doing a patch test to make sure you dont have an allergic reaction. Place a few drops of tea tree oil on a small patch of skin and watch for any signs of irritation for 24 hours. If you dont have a reaction, you should be fine to use it on a larger area, such as your scalp.
Never apply pure tea tree oil to your scalp without diluting it first. Instead, mix it with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil. It might be hard to get the oil mixture out of your hair, so you can also try diluting it in another substance, such as aloe vera or apple cider vinegar. You can also try adding tea tree oil to your regular shampoo.
When mixing your own tea tree oil solution, start with a concentration of 5 percent. This translates to 5 milliliters of tea tree oil per 100 mL of the carrier substance.
You can also buy an antidandruff shampoo containing tea tree oil.

When It Comes To Tea Tree Oil Quality Is Queen
Tea tree oil comes from the Australian-native melaleuca alternifolia plant from which the illustrious Captain James Cook brewed a tea back in the 1770s. Cook dubbed this shrub-like tree the tea tree, which, as you can probably guess, is how the plants oil came to be known as tea tree oil. As it turns out, this antimicrobial property was already being used by the Australian Aboriginal indigenous population to address all kinds of issues a fact that Cook soon discovered. Tea tree oil has had a long and storied past, which has led to many extensive studies of its natural antifungal, antiseptic, antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties.
You probably already know that you can find tea tree oil in most health food stores, but many of these inexpensive products are extracted from traditionally grown tea tree plantations where the use of pesticides and other chemicals is widespread. These store-bought tea tree oils may even be sourced from genetically modified species of the tea tree and are often mixed with other oils and compounds. Unfortunately, these types of inferior, genetically altered and adulterated strains do not offer the same healing benefits as pure, organic tea tree oil. So, when youre buying tea tree oil, its important to find the most potent and pure, highest-quality extract you can find.
