The Long Island Iced Tea is likely the strongest one you can mix up, but make sure you sip these babies slowly they sure do pack a punch!;The origins of the LIIT arent quite as clear as the drink itself. The name would lead you to believe it to be invented in Long Island, New York, and that IS where the current incarnation got its name in the 1970s. However, the cocktail may have been invented in the 1920s during the prohibition era. That version of the drink was made with maple syrup and whiskey in addition to the clear liquors.

History Of The Long Island Ice Tea

The first person to supposedly come up with the long island iced tea was a man named Rosebud Butt. In 1972. Butt was a bartender at the Oak Beach Inn located in Hampton Bay on Long Island, situated in New York.

However, in the 1920s prohibition era , a fellow named Old Man Bishop came from a local community named Long Island situated in Kingsport, Tennessee. This was the original creator of the long island iced tea.

Moreover, Old Man Bishops son Ransom Bishop was said to have perfected the cocktail. At this time, the drink included whiskey and maple syrup and different amounts of five liquors , except the Triple Sec and cola, which was omitted, of course.

    Long Island Iced Tea Ingredients

You only need a tablespoon of each of these spirits for a single serving, plus some ice-cold Cola to top and lime or lemon slices to garnish.

For a lighter version use only a teaspoon of each of the spirits. Some versions also contain simple syrup, I dont think it is needed. By all means taste your drink and add if you prefer it on the sweet side.

    • Lime Juice

I prefer to simply pour all the spirits into a glass filled with ice, stir and top with coke. If you want to dilute the spirits more then use the shaken not stirred method.

Why This Drink Is So Popular

This drink is famous, no doubt about it.

You do have to be careful when enjoying a Long Island Iced Tea because the alcohol content is quite a bit higher than most highball drinks. So be sure to enjoy them responsibly. But that is why this drink is so popular, because you can feel it pretty quickly.

This popular drink is made by combining vodka, tequila, rum, gin, and triple sec, then mixing those with sweet and sour mix. Everything is topped off with cola and served in a tall glass over ice. It looks like iced tea, but its not.

Why This Makes The Best Long Island Iced Tea Recipe

We promise: this LIIT is nothing like the sweet and artificial flavor you might be used to. This is a classy Long Island Iced Tea recipe: full of bright citrus flavor. Heres how to make it the best:

    • Use real lemon, not sour mix. Thats right! Do not even think about using store-bought sour mix here. Real citrus brings the best zingy flavor.
    • Use Cointreau, not Triple Sec. Cointreau is an orange liqueur manufactured in France that has an orange perfume flavor. Its much tastier than your average Triple Sec.
    • Use good liquor. Sure, you can use low quality booze if its all you have. But the better the liquor, the better the drink!

The high alcohol content of the Long Island cocktail does not make it particularly suitable for pre-dinner duties unless its a very aggressive, dark and stormy night. Try it as after dinner or a nightly refreshing long drink with a punching alcoholic content.

An original recipe of Long Island does not exist and there are many variations and names that it assumes around the world, depending on the bartenders. Today the IBA Long Island recipe does not foresee the use of tea, but coke and despite being contrary to rules that do not want more than two spirits in the glass has been codified in the official book of Wonders.

    • Tequila: Tequila Blanco is an unaged tequila that’s also known as silver or white tequila. Espolòn Tequila Blanco and El Jimador Silver Tequila are quality value rums that will work well in an LIT.
    • Rum: Captain Morgan White Rum or Bacardi White Rum work really well in a Long Island Iced Tea. They’re good rums that don’t break the bank.
    • Vodka: An LIT doesn’t need your favorite vodka, just a well-made vodka, like Tito’s Handmade Vodka or New Amsterdam Vodka.
    • Gin: Standards such as Beefeaters or Tangueray are perfect for Long Island Iced Tea, as is New Amsterdam Gin.
    • Triple Sec: Triple Sec is a sweet, orange flavored liqueur. Cointreau is one brand of well-known triple sec, but feel confident using one that has a lower price tag such as DeKuyper.
