Mission Papers Online: Aka The Missionary Online Recommendation System

A Day in the Life of a Latter-day Saint Missionary at the MTC

How to Login: Use your Church AccountPermission: Access granted by your bishop

While mission application form can theoretically be filled out offline with the physical paper forms, in most parts of the world, young people, bishops, and stake leaders complete the mission papers online. The Church calls this online mission papers website the Missionary Online Recommendation System and it can be accessed at missionaryrecommendations.churchofjesuschrist.org. The online process is similar to the offline process in most respects except that the information is put in the internet-based system for submitting the information to the Church.

In order to log in and get started with the online mission application, a prospective missionary needs to have a Church Account. A Church Account is the username and password you use to access personalized tools on ChurchOfJesusChrist.org such as your ward and stake calendar and directory. If you dont have one, go here to register for an Church Account. You will need to know your membership number, which you can get from your ward clerk, to complete the process of getting an account.

When you are ready to begin the process of getting your mission call, talk to your bishop and he will enable you to access the online mission recommendation system. Even if you have a Church Account, if your bishop hasnt granted you access, you cannot get into the Missionary Online Recommendation System.

How Often Should I Use The Missionary Portal

Use the Missionary Portal frequently, when you have unscheduled time, such as Sundays. Follow the scheduled activities within the Missionary Portal.

  • Be sure to complete the required activities for each week of your MTC stay. Use the check boxes next to each activity to keep track of your progress.

  • Most activities take 30 minutes or less to complete.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Michigan refers to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members in Michigan. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints arrived in Michigan in the 1830s, and while the Church did not continue to have an organized presence in the state from the late 1850s into the 1870s, missionary work was reopened then by Cyrus Wheelock and has progressed steadily since.

The official church membership as a percentage of general population was 0.44% in 2014. According to the 2014 Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life survey, less than 1% of Michiganians self-identify themselves most closely with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The LDS Church is the 13th largest denomination in Michigan.

Today there are over 45,000 church members in the state, and a temple that was dedicated in 1999.

Who Will Pay For The Phone

  , ?

Missionaries permanently assigned to the FFLM should purchase her/his own phone and are responsible for all repairs or replacements. The missionary will own his or her own phone, even after missionary service is finished.

Reassigned missionaries do not need to purchase their own phone but will be given a loaner phone upon arrival in the FFLM.

The mission will cover the expense of the service charges and data plan.

We recognize that missionaries are already making great sacrifices to serve and we pray that this will not be an extra burden to families. If financial assistance is needed, the missionary should work withs her/his bishop or branch president.

Establishment Of The Church

By 1887, Michigan was part of the Indiana Conference.

In 1890, Michigan was not officially included in any of the three conferences of the Northern States Mission.

The church dedicated a chapel in Detroit in 1928. That was the only building the church owned in the state although there were also branches in Flint, Grand Rapids, Jackson, Saginaw and Lansing.

About 1940 the church organized the East Michigan District with a district council to prepare for the shift to being a stake. The District president, Jonathan Snow, had primarily grown up in Michigan because the church had sent his father to manage the salt mines in owned in Detroit when Jonathan was a very young child. The first stake in Detroit was formed in 1952 with George Romney as president. A second stake was formed in Lansing in 1960.

In the 1970s, the Detroit Stake, now renamed the Bloomfield Hills Michigan Stake, had John R. Pfiefer as president. Under his presidency, the calling of Elders Quorum presidents was made as deliberative a process as the calling of bishops.

Managing Director Missionary Department

On behalf of the Missionary Department and missionaries around the world, we express our deep gratitude for your thoughtful donations. At a time when the gospel message spans the globe and the work continues to change in remarkable ways, the need to support our missionaries is tremendous. You have responded to spiritual stirrings like Amulek did when he sheltered and fed a tired missionary named Alma. In your selfless offering, you embody the true spirit of missionary work, which is love.

As we begin 2022, never has there been a greater need in the world for the light of the restored gospel. It is marvelous to see the Lords guiding hand through the ongoing challenges of the pandemic and the momentous changes in missionary work. Despite obstacles like border closures and travel restrictions, new opportunities continue to open before us. Most missionary training centers are reopened, and missionaries are now being prepared to serve through an inspired blend of at-home, at-MTC, and in-field training. Missionaries in the field are using technology to find and teach in ever more exciting and creative ways.

Masters Of Technology Not Slaves To It

O Divine Redeemer

Starting his service as a General Authority Seventy in Missionary Department leadership in 2014, Elder Brent H. Nielson remembers when President Russell M. Nelson then of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles chaired the Missionary Executive Council, assisted by Elder David A. Bednar, also of the Twelve.

That year, then-Elder Nelson introduced the concept of missionaries using mobile devices, now smartphones, in their daily missionary work. At that same time, Elder Bednar gave a talk at BYU Education Week and shared with the Church the blessing that social media could be if used appropriately.

In a , Elder Nielson recalled some mission leaders and parents expressing concerns missionaries being online with digital devices.

A former surgeon using the medical term of inoculating missionaries against the evils of online temptations, President Nelson made it clear that, with sufficient safeguards, our youth need to learn to be masters of technology, and not become slaves to it, said Elder Nielson, quoting the Church president.

Starting with 20 of the approximately 400 missions, the Missionary Department tried to figure out how to do missionary work using mobile devices and social media. By 2015 they expanded to 80 missions.

Number Of Missionaries And Number Of Converts

As of the end of 2021, there were 54,539 full-time missionaries of the Church serving in 407 church missions throughout the world. Their work, often in cooperation with local members, resulted in 168,283 convert baptisms in 2021. Author David Stewart points out that the number of convert baptisms per missionary per year has fallen from a high of 8.03 in 1989 to just 4.67 in 2005. He argues that the number of converts would increase if missionaries made greater efforts in meeting new people he points out that the average pair of missionaries spends only four or five hours per week attempting to meet new people.

    My Plan For Returning Missionaries

During the last few weeks of their mission, missionaries take an online course called My Plan. As part of this course they set goals and make plans that they will act on once they have returned home. After the missionaries complete the course, a copy of the plan is sent to their mission president, home stake president, and home bishop. This plan includes:

    • Developing a one-year vision for their future.
    • Setting goals and making plans for how they will develop spiritually, serve others, gain an education, secure employment, and date and prepare for temple marriage.

My Plan can be accessed using your missionary portal and is available for one year after returning home. Continue to think about, pray about and work on your plan and goals. Consider sharing your plans and goals with your leaders and family. Select and invite a mentor who can work with you to achieve your goals.

A Start From The Hill Cumorah

In March 2010, Michael Hemingway was in his final months of a three-year assignment as president of the New York Rochester Mission and set to return to employment with the Missionary Department. He was accepted to fill a new position director of internet proselyting as Church leaders expressed interest in exploring social media for missionary work, with a focus on Facebook. You had better get started while you still have some missionaries you can tell what to do, he remembers being told.

Not a fan then of Facebook, he set up a Facebook account and found the platform a marketers dream providing personal information, interests, backgrounds and connections to friends. But, he wondered, would it work for missionary work?

Hemingway started first with a handful of companionships the assistants to the president, a companionship of sisters and a senior missionary couple and held the first meetings in the Hill Cumorah Visitors Center.

I had the thought that if the Lord brought the Book of Mormon out of the Hill Cumorah to introduce the Restoration of the gospel, we should hold the first meetings about using social media, which would change how we did missionary work in the future, at the Hill Cumorah, recalled Hemingway, now executive secretary at the Provo Missionary Training Center.
