Zinus Inc.’s “Green Tea Mattress” is the subject of recent lawsuits following customer claims that the product has negatively impacted their health, reports CBS News. Ranked amongst Amazon’s top best-selling mattresses, consumer health concerns were related to fiberglass exposure from the product.
California resident, Vanessa Gutierrez, shared her experience with the Los Angeles Times after purchasing the mattress. She explained that her 5-month-old baby and 9-year-old daughter began to experience various symptoms including sores, rashes, and asthma flare-ups after use. “The baby got the worst of it,” Gutierrez told the publication. “I thought she was overactive, but it was because she was feeling the burning…. It looked like little paper cuts all over the back of her legs.”
Gutierrez is one of the thousands of Americans who have been affected by the product, reports CBS News. For some customers, the fiberglass contamination in their homes has led to thousands of dollars worth of expenses for medical treatment and hotel costs.

One of Amazon’s most popular mattresses has found itself at the center of major consumer concerns over the use of fiberglass. A woman from Sacramento, California, named Vanessa Gutierrez is leading the charge, Insider reported on Aug. 28. According to the news outlet, Gutierrez is heading a new proposed-class-action lawsuit again Zinus Inc., the maker of the “Green Tea Mattress,” which is listed as an Amazon bestseller. The suit represents a total of 2,000 individuals from across the U.S. who are claiming that they experienced harm to their health by the popular “bed-in-a-box” mattress because of fiberglass.
“Direct contact with fiberglass or breathing airborne dust containing fiberglass may irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. The symptoms of irritation are often nonspecific, temporary, and may include itching, coughing, or wheezing. High levels of exposure to airborne fiberglass may aggravate existing asthma or bronchitis-like conditions,” the Washington State Department of Health says on its website.

Zinus Inc Failed To Warn Consumers Of The Dangers Of The Glass Fibers In Their Mattresses
Like many other companies that manufacture mattresses, Zinus Inc. weaves glass fibers into the inner cover of their mattresses to improve the ability of the product to stand up to a fire.
The fiberglass in Zinus mattresses is sometimes referred to as “silicon fiber” and you can also find the inner layer of the product under the name “silica sock.”
Approximately 80% of companies that manufacture fiberglass mattresses also use modacrylic in their products, which is a synthetic textile fiber made of carcinogenic materials. Consequently, the risk of developing a serious disease as a result of exposure to the fiberglass in Zinus mattresses increases, since it is mixed with modacrylic.
Only recently, Zinus, Inc. warned consumers of the risk of removing the outer cover of the mattress. However, because the cover has a zipper and because the tag of the mattress did not include a warning of the dangers of exposure to the glass fibers in the inner cover, people think it is safe to remove the outer cover for cleaning. Another way to get exposed to shards of glass from the Zinus mattress is if the cover rips open.

Forced to relocate away from the contaminated property, the plaintiff incurred significant expense in temporary housing, meal costs, and lost deposits, it added.
The class-action complaint filed in U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Illinois on behalf of more than 2,000 people nationwide alleges that fiberglass contamination from a Zinus mattress forced a couple and their family to live in a hotel for months. Amanda Chandler and Robert Durham reported spending more than $20,000 for professional fiberglass remediation, on top of tens of thousands of dollars of property damage.
A mixture of plastic and glass, fiberglass can cause skin, respiratory and eye irritation. While the Consumer Product Safety Commission doesnt consider fiberglass flame-resistant layers in mattresses to be hazardous, a study by the California Department of Public Health found potential risk for injury if the outer cover of the mattress is removed. Zinus mattresses come with instructions to not remove the outer mattress cover. Gutierrez said she never removed the outer cover, according to the lawsuit.
The rep went on to say that Zinus will defend the composition and construction of our products in court, should that be necessary, and are confident we will prevail.

One of the best selling mattress brands on Amazon is accused of being a health hazard in a newly filed lawsuit that alleges fiberglass in the product caused customers injury.
Zinus, a Tracy, California-based furniture company, is facing a class action lawsuit alleging that the material used in its Green Tea mattress fire-resistant lining mix fiberglass with modacrylic can injure users. While the material is covered by an outer-lining, the suit says that because the company does not warn against removing that covering which has a zipper to do so it is liable for injury that comes as a result of it.
The suit ties the exposure to itchy and irritated skin, nausea, eye injury, respiratory infections and other lung problems and even shards of glass getting embedded in the skin. It also says that some who have been exposed to the fiberglass have been forced to trash furniture and clothing that have been exposed as the material can not later be removed.
As of Tuesday morning, the products are still available on Amazon. Suits have been filed in Illinois and California since 2020, according to a CBS report.
The company earns as estimated $128 million per year in revenue each year, nearly 25 percent the sales of Casper, one of the most recognizable sleep brands in America.

Fiberglass Commonly Used In Products As Flame
Fiberglass can be used as a flame-retardant in some products. The fire-resistant material in its products is standard in the mattress industry and not considered hazardous by the Consumer Product Safety Commission , Zinus told CBS.
In the Zinus class action lawsuit, some plaintiffs say they removed the protective outer cover, not knowing it was supposed to be left on.
The CPSC said fiberglass use in mattresses should not be a hazard to consumers as long as the protective outer cover is not removed or opened.
Most consumer complaints about fiberglass being released from mattresses that have been reviewed by staff involved the outer cover being removed or damaged, the commission told the Los Angeles Times.
However, Gutierrez said she had never removed or opened the cover at the time she noticed her childrens symptoms.
She says she then discovered fiberglass particles throughout her apartment. The particles infiltrated her heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, spreading through the house, she said, forcing them to live in a hotel for months.
Gutierrez is seeking recovery of damages related to her claims.

Zinus Maintains That Its Mattresses Are Not Harmful
This is not the only suit being brought against Zinus, Insider reported. It appears that consumers have been raising concerns over fiberglass in the company’s mattresses since at least 2020. For its part, Zinus has maintained its innocence. AUSTIN A new class action lawsuit filed against a mattress company is pushing for changes across the industry.
Attorney Lloyd Cueto, with Cueto Law from near St. Louis and lawyers with the Environmental Litigation Group from Birmingham refiled an amended version of the lawsuit in April against mattress manufacturer Zinus.
The mattresses are sold online and at big box retail stores.
It really is dangerous, not only the property damage to people, but the health issues, Cueto explained. We have over 200 plaintiffs in all 50 states and people are realizing theyre not alone on this.
He explained that families have had trouble breathing, skin irritation and were forced to toss belongings after removing the cover to wash it.
