How To Harvest Willow Bark For Medicine
Strip the bark from the young branches of Salix alba varieties of willow in the Spring just before the sap begins to run when the branches are rich with their new spring colour. This is the easiest time to separate the bark from the branch. If you have harvested the 1-year-old willow rods for basketry, you can simply start at the base of the cut edge and peel it upwards toward the tip. The bark will peel off in strips. You can recognize Salix alba varieties by their brightly coloured bark in early spring usually yellow, orange, or flaming red. Weeping willow trees and corkscrew willow are both varieties of Salix alba.

Make White Willow Bark Tea For Pain Relief
Debs family owns a small herb farm and herbal skin care business in Porterfield, Wisconsin. It is there that they play and work with herbs on a daily basis. Deb is a Master Gardener Volunteer, organizer of a local herb group, and a teaches herb-related and soap-making classes for a local technical college, folk school, and right on the farm.
Earlier this morning, my husband and I went for a 6-mile run in preparation for a half marathon we have coming up in May. Now, I am not a runner with a thin build by any means, so a 6-mile run to me equals pain later. Typically, my husband would be offering me several blue pills for pain sometime later that day and I hate taking pills!
Today I am trying a new kind of natural pain reliever by making a tea of white willow bark.

White willow bark contains salicylic acid that is also found in aspirin. It is recommended that one drink 3 to 4 cups of this tea to benefit from its use. Although the tea may be slower acting than aspirin, it has longer lasting effects.
Start by adding 1 to 2 teaspoons of white willow bark to 8 ounces of water. I used 16 ounces and added about 4 teaspoons. Allow this to boil for about 5 to 10 minutes. Once it has boiled, turn off the heat and allow it to steep between 20 and 30 minutes. You will notice the herbs drop down to the bottom of the pan and the tea is taking on a beautiful red color.

Preparing Willow Bark Tea
If you want to get the maximum benefits from your willow bark tea, you need to prepare it properly. Not simmering it for long enough will decrease its potency and therefore also decrease the benefits, but so will incorrect measurements. The best way to prepare willow bark tea is:
- Bring about two teaspoons of willow bark to a boil in eight ounces of water
- Once its boiling, reduce the heat and let your bark simmer for about ten minutes
- While simmering, prepare a jar with a coffee filter or cheesecloth over it
- Take your mixture off the heat and strain the liquid into the jar
- Let it sit for about half an hour, then pour into your favorite mug and enjoy
This will make eight ounces of tea. However, if you want to reach maximum relief, many recommend doubling or even tripling the recipe. Your tea will taste like warm bark water, as one might expect, so you can add some honey, maple syrup, or even cinnamon to help with the taste.
Willow bark is also available in capsules and tinctures if you dont want to go to the trouble of brewing your own tisane or herbal infusion.

Is white willow bark safer than aspirin or ibuprofen? Because it has several active compounds, including salicin, flavonoids and polyphenols, theres some evidence that willow bark provides a broader mechanism of action, while also being less likely to cause serious side effects including ibuprofen overdose.
