Usually, chondrocytes keep a dynamic equilibrium between production and degradation of the extracellular matrix, such as aggrecan and type II collagen, which are the most relevant proteoglycan in the articular cartilage. In the OA, there is a disorder of synovial joints presenting focal areas of articular cartilage damage, associated with new bone formation at the margin of the joints, modifications in the subchondral bone, synovitis, and thickening of the joint capsule. The results for these dysfunctions depend on the severity of the damage, but the characteristic clinical symptoms are inflammation, reduced range of motion, mild-to-severe pain, and deformity. In addition to the degradation of the articular cartilage, OA also involves damages to bone and synovium in the joints and is associated with lifestyle, diet, genetics, and aging .

The pathophysiology of OA is not fully understood, but it is known that the pathogenesis involves inflammatory processes, oxidative stress, osteoclastogenesis, and proteolytic degradation of cartilage . Chondrocytes are the only cells found in the cartilage matrix and are the central regulators of matrix catabolism and anabolism in the articular cartilage. In the presence of inductive stimuli, there is an increased activity or expression of cartilage proteinases, which are primarily synthesized by chondrocytes leading to OA .

In 2008 the Journal Osteoporosis Internationalpublished an article “Protective effect of green tea polyphenols on bone loss in middle-aged female rats.” (Rats are often used in Osteopenia, Osteoporosis studies when a study requires post mortem evaluation of bone density.

After this research showed promise, there was a study of post-menopausal women.

In 2012 a study was published in which Postmenopausal women with osteopenia received green tea polyphenols supplement and/or Tai Chi exercise for 6 months.

The study showed that GTP supplementation and Tai Chi exercise increased bone formation biomarkers and improved bone turnover rate. Tai Chi exercise increased serum parathyroid hormone. GTP supplementation, Tai Chi exercise, and the combination of the two all improved muscle strength in postmenopausal women with osteopenia.

Green Tea Can Help Joint Pain By Addressing Body Fat And Cholesterol Issues

Back in 2005, researchers in Japan published what is considered a hallmark study on the health benefits of green tea. In this study, the researchers examined the role of the green tea extract catechins in the reduction of body fat and malondialdehyde-modified LDL in men.

  • Green tea, Black tea, and Oolong tea come from the same plant, Camellia sinensis, or commonly referred to as the Tea Plant. The difference in the teas are how the teas are produced from the plant.
  • Catechins are a type of natural phenol. Phenols are a plant derived chemical that protects the plant from disease as a disinfectant and antioxidant.

Published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, this 2005 study took 35 Japanese men with similar Body Mass Index and waist circumference and divided these individuals into two groups.

  • One group drank a 1 bottle oolong tea a day containing 690 mg of green tea extract catechins.
  • One group drank 1 bottle oolong tea day containing only 22 mg of green tea extract catechins which served as the control group.

After 12 weeks of the daily consumption of the oolong tea a day containing 690 mg catechins, researchers found the test subjects had:

  • Lower Body weight,
  • Less body fat mass,
  • and subcutaneous fat area was significantly lower
  • Changes in the concentrations of malondialdehyde-modified LDL were positively associated with changes in body fat mass and total fat area in the green tea extract group. .

What Happens If You Drink Too Much Green Tea

According to WebMD:

Drinking too much green tea more than five cups per day, for example is POSSIBLY UNSAFE. It can cause side effects because of the caffeine. These side effects can range from mild to serious and include headache, nervousness, sleep problems, vomiting, diarrhea, irritability, irregular heartbeat, tremor, heartburn, dizziness, ringing in the ears, convulsions, and confusion. The fatal dose of caffeine in green tea is estimated to be 10-14 grams . Serious toxicity can occur at lower doses.

As long as you dont have any of the conditions listed above, and your doctor has cleared you to take green tea, and you restrict yourself to two or three cups per day , then you should get all the potential health benefits without any nasty side effects.
