What Does Matcha Taste Like
The taste of matcha can also vary depending on quality and where the leaves of the tea plant are grown. Bad matcha can brew into bitter flavors but premium matcha can deliver a flavor profile that is nuanced and rich. Good matcha like ceremonial grade matcha powder offers an umami taste that is vegetal and slightly sweet. This type of matcha is also the one used by expert matcha drinkers as part of cultural tea ceremonies. Using high-quality matcha can help avoid the bitter flavors associated with green tea.
On the other hand, Chinese green teas are roasted instead of steamed. This process imparts a mildly smoky and roasted flavor to green tea. Tea drinkers that prefer stronger flavors and toasted flavor profiles will enjoy the roasted, warm nature of Chinese green teas.
Prepare And Heat Water
Brewing a delectable cup of green tea starts with using the right water. We recommend avoiding tap water and hard water because it is treated with chemicals that can alter the delicate flavor profile of green tea. Instead, use filtered water, spring water, or purified water to get the best flavor.
Green tea flavor compounds are sensitive to high water temperatures and should be brewed using water at lower temperatures rather than boiling water. That means that unlike black tea, if you steep your green tea in water that is too hot, you’ll get an astringency that results in bitter, unpleasant flavor. Instead, aim to steep your green tea in water that is 175 to 185 F, which is the right temperature range for green tea. The ideal temperature will vary slightly when it comes to rare or expensive green teas so make sure to follow the guidelines or your specific green tea type.
For the most accurate results, you can use a tea kettle with a built in temperature gauge or a thermometer. Alternatively, you can boil water on the stovetop, remove from heat and allow the hot water to sit for about 45 to 60 seconds for the perfect cup.
If you are at sea level, you may need to let the water cool a bit longer. That’s because the boiling point of water is 212 F at sea level and only 200.1 F at 6,600 feet. Again, you may prefer to use a thermometer for precise results otherwise, be patient and tweak your green tea recipe to suit your situation.

How To Make Green TeaMaking the perfect green tea is really easy, but you have to do it just right. Follow these simple steps to brew a green tea so lovely youâll want another as soon as itâs finished.
Choose How Many Tea BagsIf youâre making a single cup of green tea, add one teabag to your cup or glass. If youâre brewing a pot of tea, add two or more of your favourite green tea bags, depending on how strong you like it. Or, use teapot bags to keep things even simpler.
Use Fresh WaterIdeally, you want soft water rather than hard water for your brew. And always go for fresh over already-boiled or diffused water, as both of these will give you a flat-tasting tea.
Make Sure It Boils
Make sure you heat your water in a kettle or in a pan on the stove – until it boils. This is important because the bubbles that appear at boiling point are carbon leaving the water. This in turn decreases the acidity of the water and makes your brew take on a clearer colour.
Donât heat water using a microwave. Youâll lose that full-flavour taste and the tea will have a scummy surface . After boiling, let the water rest for a few minutes to cool slightly. Then pour.
Pour With PowerHave your teabag ready in the bottom of your cup or teapot and pour the hot water on top. The action of the water hitting the bag will help release the teaâs flavour and aroma quicker.
After finishing a cup of this, youâll be ready to take on the world.
Why Does Green Tea Taste Bitter
One reason green tea tastes bitter is you’re using the wrong water. Tap water and distilled water don’t develop tea flavors well. Minerals and chemicals in tap water can react with chemical compounds in green tea and turn the taste sour. Distilled water doesn’t release flavor and results in a weak tea. Always use pure, filtered, or spring water when making your tea.
The main culprits behind bitter green teas are temperature and steeping time. Green teas brewed at high temperatures turn bitter because polyphenols are released too fast. Steeping green tea for too long also results in bitter flavors. Essentially, brewing green tea is just like cooking a meal. If you leave it cooking for too long, it burns and tastes bad.
Poor quality green tea can also produce bad flavor. Loose tea tends to deliver better flavor than tea bags. That’s because tea bags contain the dust and fannings of the tea leaves, which are lower quality and more prone to impart bitter taste. when you want to drink green tea with delicious flavor, stick to loose leaf teas.
The solution is to get green tea brewing methods down to a science. There are a few simple guidelines for steeping that will ensure your green tea tastes good. Green tea is also a great base tea so you can minimize the biting nature of the tea if it isn’t to your liking. Play up flavors by adding sweeteners and check out some of our other tips below.

Our Favorite Tea Leaves For Cold Brew Green Tea
Here are the flavor profiles of each tea:
1. Gyukuro tea was very delicate and had a light aroma. The flavors were mellow and floral, not much of the bottled green tea taste. The texture was water-like with a clean finish. 2. Tea leaves picked 88 days smelled like bottled green tea. It had a strong tea flavor, slightly tart, and fragrant finish. This was our favorite. 3. Shincha had a very light aroma. The tea tasted medicinal and herby, slightly bitter with a tart finish. 4. Ippodo Hosen tea had a light aroma and a very refined green tea flavor. It had a slightly tart finish but tasted really clean. This was our second favorite. 5. Bancha was quite horrible. There was no green tea smell and the aroma reminded us of burnt leaves. The drink didnt taste like green tea at all and left our mouth dry.
So what did we learn from our experiment? Our preferred green tea for the cold brew method is Hachiju Hachiya Sencha that has had time to mature. Gyukuro and Shincha are both too light and lacked the deep green tea flavor profile. Bancha was quite awful and we wouldnt be able to tell it was even green tea.
