Your first thought on how to make iced tea might be to brew the tea as normal and let it get cold in the refrigerator. That means having to wait a long time before you drink the iced tea. By creating a super concentrated tea infusion and combining it with cold water, you will make iced tea that you’ll be enjoying in just minutes! Sweeten it with simple syrup and serve it over ice for a refreshing, almost-instant iced tea beverage.

Steeping Hot Brewed Tea Vs Cold Brewed Tea

There are distinct chemical differences between cold-brewed tea and hot-brewed tea. Tea is typically steeped in hot to boiling water for 3 – 7 minutes. In comparison to the well-established hot brew methods, cold brew methods are still being developed.

The same pleasant chemicals extracted from steeping tea leaves in hot water are not extracted in cold water. To combat this extraction problem, the amount of tea leaves used is often increased, and the steep time is drastically altered.

Hot brewed tea pulls out the tannins, which are the bitter flavors in tea. With cold brewed, you have a perfectly refreshing, super-smooth tea for slow summer sipping. It isnt bitter at all.

Cold-brew tea produces a different flavor of tea because it pulls out fewer catechins and tannins. Tea tannins are typically substances that can make the tea taste bitter. It is not clear yet how the caffeine content is altered.

What Is Cold Brew Tea

  • Cold brewing is a slow and gentle process where tea steeps in water for hours in the refrigerator. Cold brew tea makes absolutely the best iced tea. Its also the easiest way to make iced tea, but it does take several hours.
  • Cold brewing makes a sweeter, smoother tasting tea since tannins, which make tea bitter, arent steeped out of the tea in cold water the way it does in hot water. This means no more bitter iced tea!
  • Because cold brewing doesnt involve hot water, its perfect to make in the hot summer months.

How To Cold Steep Tea

Cold brew coffee is a thing and so is cold steep tea. The cold steep tea method is similar as it involves making your tea with cold water only, eliminating the water-heating process. Dont confuse it with iced tea as cold steeping tea does not involve any ice but this method is still refreshing and offers many advantages. Since you are using no hot water here, the tea leaves are extracted much slower which may result in a lighter-bodied tea with less astringency and bitterness. Its an easy way to enjoy any tea type as they will all cold steep well, steep times varying.

A simple but effective way to add extra aromatics to your iced tea. Herbs that work well include mint, basil and lemon thyme. You could also try kaffir lime leaves. Just avoid herbs that are solely savoury, such as coriander and chives.

A fresh sprig of elderflower can pep up a simple iced tea. Submerge a large handful into your iced tea and leave it to infuse as the tea cools down. Alternatively, add a good glug of elderflower cordial to the tea before you add any sweetener.

Sliced peaches and apricots, fresh berries and citrus fruits all compliment tea well. You could also add chopped cucumber for a refreshing taste.

For an adults-only version of iced tea, add some shots of your choice of alcohol. A spiced rum, Pimms or gin would all work well. Simply add to your iced tea after its been chilled.

Why I Don’t Use An Ice Tea Maker

How To Make Cold Brew Tea (Easy Recipe For The Best Green ...

Years ago, I purchased a popular brand iced tea maker appliance. I had to buy filters, clean the darn thing which was a time-wasting project, deplete my freezer’s entire ice bin… it was just annoying.

But what really bothered me about it was the plastic pitcher. When I bought the maker, the BPA concerns were just coming into public awareness. The maker’s product information did not confirm if it did, or did not, have BPA. Since, at that time, I couldn’t find too many other alternatives, I bought it. Because of the BPA concerns, and the hassle, the maker has been sitting idle for years.

I looked into iced tea maker options again just recently. What’s interesting is that the same maker I bought years ago is still available and STILL does not confirm if its pitcher does, or does not, contain BPA. Wow.

Other makers had glass or plastic pitchers which were BPA-free. But the expense and maintenance hassle were still there. The only options that seemed viable were infuser-type pitchers where you drop tea leaves or bags into the infuser and steep.

Even though there were options, none of them seemed ideal. So I had to get creative.

To make cold brew iced tea, I simply FILL my container , FLOAT the tea bags, cover, and pop it in the FRIDGE to steep.

Why Does My Iced Tea Get Cloudy

If youve ever made a beautiful jug of iced tea, only to go back a little later and discover it isnt looking or tasting its best, youre not alone, its a common issue. How to prevent your iced tea from developing a cloudy appearance is one of the questions were asked the most.

Creating a pitcher of delicious iced tea, only to find that soon after that its turned cloudy, can be disappointing. The chances are it wont taste as good either. There are several reasons this could be happening. Heres are the most common issues and what you can do to fix them.

    1. Clean your tea-making equipment one of the most common reasons for cloudy tea is using equipment and utensils that arent clean enough. Any dirt or grease on your teapots, jugs, or spoons will mix with your tea, making it look cloudy.

Often, these items might look clean but can have a film of grease or dirt that you cant see. Try washing your tea making items separately from the rest of your dishes in hot soapy water and rinse them well.

If you usually use a dishwasher, run a service wash with a specialist detergent to clean out any blockages or build-up that stops your dishes from getting really clean. Check that there isnt any detergent residue left on the items you clean.

If youre sure everythings squeaky clean, then its something else making your iced-tea cloudy.

Put The Jar In The Refrigerator For At Least 8 Hours

Now its time to place the tea in the refrigerator. Ideally, cold brew tea should steep for 8-12 hours and no more than 24 hours. Personally, I brew it about 12 hours overnight.

Heres a little known tip if youre pinched for time.

The tea experts at Whittard of Chelsea recommend using a flash heat method to wake the tea up before adding cold water. This is accomplished by covering the leaves with 2 inches of boiling or near-boiling water. Then it is topped off with cold water and brewed at least 4-6 hours.

On another note, Whittard also explains that hot water kills natural bacteria in unprocessed teas.

How To Brew Loose Leaf Tea For Iced Tea:

Here are two methods for brewing iced tea. The first method is to use an iced tea pitcher design for loose leaf tea. The advantage of this is ease of use, plus you can serve tea right out of the pitcherno need for additional tea ware. The other method uses existing tea ware to brew a double strength batch.

Method 1: Using an Iced Tea Pitcher

Our Mist Iced Tea Pitcher is the best way to go for brewing iced tea. All you have to do is add your loose leaf tea directly inside the pitcher. Then add water! The filter at the top of the pitcher will keep tea leaves from reaching your glass. With the Mist Iced Tea Pitcher, there are is a cold brew and a hot brew method.

    Cold Brew Method

  • Add 7-10 tsp loose leaf tea to the 50oz pitcher
  • Gently pour 3 cups hot water first, steep 2-5 minutes
  • Add 2-3 cups ice cold water with ice cubes
  • Pour to serve!
  • Method 2: Using traditional tea ware

We have a handy guide for brewing loose leaf tea here. The only difference for brewing iced tea is that you double the amount of loose leaf tea you use per cup of water. For example, Instead of using 1 tsp per cup, use 2 tsp. This is because once youre done steeping the tea, you are going to add ice. Adding ice dilutes it.

Simply follow the directions in the guide. When you are ready to serve, pour over a glass of ice. Tip: let the tea cool a little while so you dont need a lot of ice

What Kind Of Tea Is Iced Tea

If youre wondering what type of tea is iced tea – the answer is all kinds of tea! Iced tea can be made out of regular tea bags and loose leaf tea, or large tea bags made specifically for pitchers of iced tea. Black tea is commonly used for iced tea, but white tea, green tea, and oolong tea also work particularly well over ice without losing flavor integrity or aroma. Some herbal teas – particularly fruit and hibiscus blends – are very refreshing iced. Regardless, all tea types will make for lovely iced teas!

There are a few different ways to make any tea iced, and both hot and cold brewing techniques can be used to make iced tea. The classic way is to make iced tea from hot tea by steeping hot tea and pouring it over ice. If youre using this method, you should double the amount of tea you would normally use so it doesnt get watered down. Sometimes, however, chilling hot-brewed tea in the fridge can result in unwanted bitterness. Cold brewing by putting a tea bag in cold water can help to retain sweetness and fuller flavor when making iced tea.

To lightly sweeten your tea, start with one teaspoon of your favorite sweetener for a glass of iced tea, or a ½ cup for a large pitcher of iced tea. Or, if you really have a sweet tooth, add additional teaspoons to your glass to taste, and an extra ¼ cup of sweetener to your pitcher.

If you’ve made a concentrate, you can either pour it into a serving pitcher along with 4 cups more cold water, or you can leave as is, diluting as you go if you plan to drink it all yourselfwith seltzer or even lemonade if you’re feeling fiesty.
