It’s always the right time for pumpkin spice, and it’s a tragedy so many places limit the drink to just two to three months out of the year. I usually mark down on my calendar the exact day Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts will release their fall menus, and then proceed to only consume pumpkin spice anything until I feel like pumpkin puree runs through my veins. But while I do enjoy looking forward to their return in coffee shops, I also wanted to learn how to make my own at home. Luckily, it’s not entirely a made-from-scratch drink, as it actually calls for the pumpkin spice coffee blend by Dunkin’ Donuts, but I still got to add in my own flair. The prep itself is incredibly simple, and I only used one pan. After brewing a cup of the coffee and setting a few mugs aside, I mixed pumpkin puree and pumpkin spice in a sauce pan, adding in sugar and vanilla to make a syrup. I definitely recommend following the instructions of stirring consistently and without getting distracted, because it’s easy to burn the mixture . Once the syrup blended together, I added in the milk and used one of the hand frothers I got from Ikea. I basically was like a TikTok coffee connoisseur.

I am so glad that Fall is here. When I think of Fall, it means pumpkin in my head. It means, its finally okay to cook and bake with pumpkin and people wont think Im weird. Its the time I can admit to using pumpkin because its the right season. The rest of the time, I just keep quiet about it.
Yeah, Im that girl. And Im not ashamed.
So last year, during pumpkin season, I began the grueling task of trying to duplicate the popular Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte at home.
It wasnt too hard, because there were dozens of different recipes out there already, so I had a base to work with and then just kept changing it until I made it my own. Probably isnt exactly like Starbucks, but I didnt care because I loved my version.
Towards the end of the season, I started trying to put together a donut that had the same flavors as the Pumpkin Spice Latte.
I made donut batch after donut batch, adding and subtracting ingredients (with milk, without milk, with loads of strong coffee, with hardly any coffee, with cream, with less spice, with more spice, using a coffee simple syrup, then using a pumpkin spice simple syrup, using both, etc. etc. etc. until I could get as close to the Pumpkin Spice Latte flavor I loved and wanted in this donut.

What’s In The Cinnamon Sugar Pumpkin Signature Latte
The Cinnamon Sugar Pumpkin Signature Latte is available hot or iced and is made with similar ingredients to Dunkin’s signature iced lattes: milk blended with freshly brewed espresso. According to Dunkin’s site, the latte features pumpkin and cinnamon flavors and is topped with whipped cream, a caramel drizzle, and a cinnamon sugar topping. If you’re ordering it hot, the milk is steamed to make a frothy topping.

Dunkin’ describes its Pumpkin Spice Latte as a beverage made “with warm, frothy milk and blended with rich espresso, whipped cream, drizzle, and toppings.” But even if you were to swap out the milk for a vegan alternative like almond milk, sadly, Elite Daily says this drink is still not vegan-friendly. The problem stems from that pumpkin-flavored swirl syrup Dunkin’ uses to make its PSLs so addictive. It contains sweetened condensed nonfat milk again not vegan. So, unfortunately, there is no way to make this autumnal favorite from Dunkin’ vegan-friendly. The Starbucks website lists the ingredients in its Pumpkin Spice Sauce as sugar, condensed skim milk, pumpkin puree, 2% or less of fruit and vegetable juice for color, natural flavors, annatto, salt, and potassium sorbate. It’s great that the company is using some all-natural additives, but the final ingredient is a common preservative.
A tall Starbucks PSL made with 2% steamed milk foam has 300 calories, 11 grams of fat, 40 grams of carb, and 11 grams of protein, and 39 grams of sugar. Substituting whole milk would presumably bump up the calorie and fat content. To put that in perspective, a Starbucks Cheese Danish is lower in everything, including sugar, with 28 fewer grams than the PSL. So when you order a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte, enjoy every sip but just think of it as a dessert rather than a coffee.
Tip: Starbucks tells Health that customers can customize their PSL. Ask for fewer pumps of pumpkin spice sauce, less whip, or no whip, for example, if you’re looking to cut calories.
