Experts Rank The Best Dairy Milks For Lattes

Whole milk

If you choose dairy for your home latte, go with whole milk. In milk frothing, whole milk will be the easiest dairy to froth, Teoh said. All other milk-milk alternatives will need a little more practice to balance the aeration and incorporation of air into the milk.

The goldilocks of the dairy choices, whole milk has neither too much nor too little fat, which allows for great flavor and texture and is the go-to of many cafes. Most people enjoy the flavor of whole milk due to its full-fat content that provides more sweetness and a richer profile that compliments espresso, Teoh explained.

Skim milk

Although skim milk has had most of its fat removed, it can still be effectively foamed. According to Teoh, this milk usually produces a lot of foam when frothing. A skim latte is a good choice. But if youre used to that creamy and rich flavor traditionally associated with a latte, skim might not cut it. Teoh described the skim milk latte as tasting more watered-down and less satisfying than whole milk or cream.

Half-and-half

Oat milk

Luscious and naturally sweet, oat milk has gained a cult following for its perfect pairing with coffee drinks like the latte.

Theres a wide range of excellent oat milk brands that steam well, although some perform better than others, Tohm Ifergan, founder and CEO of Dayglow Coffee, said.

Almond milk

Cashew milk

Pea-based milk

Coconut milk

Soy milk

This plant-based OG isnt your best bet when it comes to frothing.

Oat creamer was developed to be a non for customers who like vegan, dairy-free flat whites, cappuccinos, and lattes.

Here is an At-A-Glance chart comparing the best of the barista milk, including oat milk and comparable products that make a great latte, such as macadamia milk.

Best Oat Milk For Frothing

The Best Homemade Oat Milk Iced Latte

For those who love drinking oat milk lattes, the disappointment of it not holding its froth can be a real downer.

We recommend the Oatly oat milk brand, either the Full Fat or Barista Edition, as our first pick for frothing. Both of these oat milks work very well. The Barista edition was explicitly created for frothing, steaming, and making latte art. It is a little pricier than the regular full-fat oat milk. The full-fat froths and steams very nicely, it is a great choice if you are price shopping. They will both taste great! Get the rest of our brand recommendations and ways to froth oat milk here.

If you’re not a coffee drinker, these Starbucks oat milk drinks are for you. A chai tea latte is known for its spicy and sweet taste with a creamy and velvety texture, thanks to its milk.

This drink replaces regular milk with a non-dairy alternative–oat milk– which gives the cup a whole new flavor. Unlike whole milk, oat milk is a little sweeter. This balances the spices in the chai tea latte, giving it a lighter and luscious taste.

Pro tip: If you want to add more kick to this drink, you can ask the barista to add a shot or two of espresso to turn this drink into an Oat Milk Dirty Chai Tea Latte. You can also ask for the Starbucks iced chai latte if you want a refreshing cold drink.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Drinking Oat Milk

Nicole Magryta, RDN, author of Nourish Your Tribe, says most oat milks contain one to three grams of fiber per serving , but also contain more calories and carbohydrates. In other words, you’re kind of coming out even unless you’re buying fortified oat milk from a supermarket.

“The health benefits of the milk itself are not necessarily from the oats and water, which offer marginal benefits, but from the fortified nutrients added during processing,” says Magryta. ” vitamins A, D, B12, B2 and calcium are added so the product can be a close nutritional substitute for dairy milk.”

What about homemade, unfortified oat milk is there any point to drinking it? Yes, but mostly only if you need to avoid cow’s milk because of an allergy or want to support a more sustainable alternative, says Magryta. Because sensitivities or allergies to oats are uncommon, oat milk gives people with dietary restrictions on soy, dairy, or nuts another beverage alternative.

How Does It Taste Cold

When drinking the Rebel Kitchen Barista Mylk cold, for me it tastes like oat milk, it’s a bit on the sweet side, but the aftertaste for me is raw oats. I can taste the coconut in there, only just, it’s not overpowering but I’m guessing this is where the sweetness is coming from.

The one thing I can’t taste is milk. I know, it’s not milk but the box says it tastes like milk, and I have to disagree, sorry :-. To me, it tastes like fairly sweet oat milk, and it doesn’t taste any more like cow’s milk than Oatly barista or Minor figures.

Califia Almond Barista Blend

Yes, we know: Growing almonds takes a lot of water, which is a problem in California’s drought-stricken central valley especially. But you know what uses more? The crops that cows eat and the pasture they live in, not counting all the water they consume. If we could replace all dairy farms with almond groves, the result would still be better for the climate.

With its Barista Blend , California’s own Califia Farms has managed to create almond milk that doesn’t taste like almonds. “I don’t know what that is, but it’s definitely not nutty,” my friend Holly said in her blind taste test. We found the foam fine and creamy. The consistency was a little on the thin side, however, with a very slight metallic aftertaste.

This blend does seem to be a fertile milk when it comes to making foam art, however, and was ranked at the top in this pro barista test.

Oatly Original Oat Milk

Magryta says Oatly! milk is made from gluten-free oats, certified Non-GMO, doesn’t contain gums or traditional thickeners, and also carries the Glyphosate Residue Free certification by The Detox Project.

“A problem with most versions of this product is that they contain grape seed oil, which is an inflammatory industrial seed oil,” she adds. “To avoid this, I recommend purchasing their low-fat option which leaves the oil out.”

Which Is Better Almond Or Oat Milk

That depends on your preferences and dietary needs. Both almond and oat milk have a distinctive taste. Almond milk is lower in carbs, while oat milk is naturally higher in carbs. Almond milk tends to be thinner and less creamy than oat milk. However, they can both be used in similar ways as a milk alternative.

Neither almond nor oat milk contains much protein naturally. However, some brands contain added protein, calcium, and vitamin D to make them more nutritionally similar to cows milk.

Oat milk is a popular plant-based beverage thats enjoyed for its slightly sweet, oat flavor and creamy consistency.

While numerous options abound, the healthiest ones tend to be low in sugar and additives.
