What Is A Temple

Temples existed throughout biblical times. These buildings were considered the house of the Lord . Latter-day Saint temples are likewise considered houses of the Lord by Church members.

To Latter-day Saints, temples are sacred buildings in which they are taught about the central role of Christ in Gods plan of salvation and their personal relationship with God.

In temples, members of the Church make covenants, or promises, with God to live a virtuous and faithful life. They also participate in ordinances on behalf of their deceased ancestors.

Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are also used to perform marriage ceremonies in which the faithful are promised eternal life with their families. For members of the Church, family is of central importance.

Are The Articles Of Faith Of The Latter

Some of the statements made in the Articles of Faith seem to fit the Bibles teachings, and Mormons have always maintained their beliefs are consistent with Scripture. When contemplating the Latter-Day Saints beliefs, Christians should bear these things in mind:

1. Mormons base their salvation on works. Article 3 indicates obedience is necessary for salvation. This contrasts with For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing it is the gift of God .

2. Article 4 declares baptism is necessary for salvation and that a believer must have hands laid upon them to receive the Holy Spirit But Scripture tells us in Acts 10:44-48, 1 Corinthians 3:16, and Galatians 3:2 that we receive the Holy Spirit when we repent and believe .

3. Article 8 gives the same credence to the Book of the Mormon as to the Bible. In addition to The Book of Mormon, Mormons revere the texts Doctrines and Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price. The canon of the Bible is complete, and no supposed vision supersedes what God has given to us through His Word . There exist no other Scriptures or authoritative words to us outside of the Bible.

4. Mormons do not make much of the cross. Without the cross, there is no Resurrection, and our faith would be in vain, as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:12-21.

Why Does The Church Send Out Missionaries

The missionary effort of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is based on the New Testament pattern of missionaries serving in pairs, teaching the gospel and baptizing believers in the name of Jesus Christ . Missionary work is voluntary, with most missionaries funding their own missions. They receive their assignment from Church headquarters and are sent only to countries where governments allow the Church to operate. In some parts of the world, missionaries are sent only to serve humanitarian or other specialized missions.

We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in his Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost, who bears record of them forever.

We believe that all mankind, through the transgression of our first parents, were brought under the curse and penalty of transgression, but that through the sufferings, , death and atonement of Jesus Christ, all are to be redeemed from any effects of original transgression that as they were placed under a penalty without any act of their own, so they were delivered from it precisely on the same terms. For as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation even so, by the righteousness of one, the free gift came upon all men unto the justification of life

We believe that little children are innocent, and not under transgression that they are incapable of obeying any law, not believing good or evil and Jesus says, Of such are the kingdom of heaven but they, when they arrive at years of maturity, and know good from evil, and are capable of obeying or disobeying a law if they then transgress, they will be condemned for breaking a known law.

That the next is to repent ofto confess, and to turn away from their sins, and make restitution to all whom they have injured, as far as it is in their power.

The Articles Of Faith Are Not A Complete Code Of Faith

The Articles of Faith gained more notoriety with James E. Talmage’s publication of Articles of Faith in 1899a series of elaborations on these fundamental truths within our religion. While Talmage held the highest degree of reverence for these simple and sacred statements of belief, he acknowledged that Latter-day Saints “announce no such creed as a complete code of faith for they accept the principle of continuous revelation as an essential feature of their belief” .

This statement provides one of the most beautiful and profound recognitions of the Articles of Faiththat they provide a unifying understanding of our basic beliefs while still allowing for growth and for our own personal convictions received through revelation.

The 13th article of faith teaches members how they should live their lives. Members should be honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men.

The next part talks about the admonition of Paul, which you can find in the Bible, in Philippians chapter 4, verse 8 . However, I will state it here for you:

Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Members of the Church think, believe, and have hope in all things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. Members look for things in their life that have these qualities.

What Are The Differences Betweenthe Rlds And Lds Faiths

Both faiths recognize Joseph Smith, Jr. as founder. However, whenJoseph Jr. was killed in 1844, the church found itself in a stateof confusion and disorganization for several years. Thus, a numberof factions developed. One group moved west to the Great SaltLake Valley under the direction of Brigham Young. Thisgroup is now known as the Mormons. Other members believed thatJoseph Smith, Jr. had designated his eldest son, Joseph III, tobe his successor as president/prophet of the church. This groupremained in the midwest and became known as the “Reorganization.”The Reorganized CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints wasofficially organized on April 6, 1860, at Amboy, Illinois, underthe leadership of Joseph Smith III. Original Articles Of Faith

Lets take a closer look as to the foundation of the critics claim that there were 14 original Articles of Faith. Before we do, however, let us keep in mind the purpose of the Articles of Faith or what some other religions may call a Statement of Faith. The purpose is not to develop a lengthy treatise to describe in great detail the doctrines and practices of a religious group or church. It is an abbreviated list of basic beliefsnothing more and nothing less. With that in mind, let us move on.

Some anti-Mormon authors attempt to portray a document published by Orson Pratt as the first Articles of Faith. In an 1841 publication, Pratt gave a sketch of the faith and doctrine of this church, which spanned eight pages. It was titled Interesting Account of Several Remarkable Visions, published by Ballantyne and Hughes in 1841. Eight pages is a little long to be considered the Articles of Faith or a Statement of Faith, dont you think? Especially when one considers that these eight pages were never presented as the Churchs Articles of Faith. Further, Pratts sketch was made up of twenty paragraphs that covered a multitude of principles and doctrines. There was no attempt to number or categorize the beliefs. And an attempt to number them as 13 or 14 is futile it was a simple pamphlet or tract.

Some anti-Mormon authors claim that this was the original Articles of Faith. There is absolutely no basis for such a conclusion. This publication:

The Articles of Faith are a set of 13 core belief statements that were written by Joseph Smith in 1842 as a response to a newspaper editors request for information about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Articles of Faith were officially canonized as scripture in 1880. Watch the video Articles of Faith.

The Articles of Faith describe fundamental beliefs about the nature of God, the mission and Atonement of Jesus Christ, and the holy scriptures. They also address the importance of religious freedom, tolerance for the beliefs of others, missionary work, baptism, and obedience to secular laws and governments.

The Articles of Faith provide a good summary of the beliefs of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but they do not include all the Churchs beliefs. Members of the Church believe in continuing revelationin other words, Gods continuing communication with people on earth, which allows for new doctrine to be given. The Articles of Faith contain messages that help people become better followers of Jesus Christ so that they can return to live with God.

What Is The Book Of Mormon

In addition to the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, the Book of Mormon, named after one of its ancient prophets, is another testament of Jesus Christ. It contains the writings of prophets, giving an account of Gods dealings with the peoples who lived anciently on the American continent. For Latter-day Saints it stands alongside the Old and New Testaments of the Bible as holy scripture.

Articles Of Faith About Our Eternal Resources In This Mortal Journey

The seventh article of faith is referring to what members of the Church call spiritual gifts. These gifts are from God and are given through the Holy Ghost. A volume of scripture that members believe in, called the Doctrine and Covenants, details these gifts in chapter 46, verses 9 through 33

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ believe that the Bible and the Book of Mormon are both testaments of Christ. There is some criticism of this article of faith that is directed towards the statement about the Bible, as far as it is translated correctly. Some feel that this is a copout. However, in 1992, the first presidency of the Church made a statement about which edition of the Bible the Church uses and why:

The ninth article of faith states that members of the Church believe that the heavens are still open. God still sends revelation to man, and He will continue to do so.

We believe in God the Eternal Father, and in his son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.

We believe that men will be punished for their own sins and not for Adam’s transgression.

We believe that through the atonement of Christ all mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

We believe that these ordinances are 1st, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ 2d, Repentance 3d, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins 4th, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

We believe that a man must be called of God by “prophesy, and by laying on of hands” by those who are in authority to preach the gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.

We believe in the same organization that existed in the primitive Church, viz: apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, & c.

We believe in the gift of tongues, prophesy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues & c.

We believe the bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

We believe all that God has revealed, all that he does now reveal, and we believe that he will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

Thought: The Church does not endorse any political party or any political candidate, nor does it permit the use of Church buildings and facilities for political purposes. We believe that the Church should remain out of politics unless there is a moral question at issue. And in the case of a moral issue we would expect to speak out on our view. But, in the matter of everyday political considerations, we try to remain aloof from those as a Church, while at the same time urging our members, as citizens, to exercise their political franchise as individuals. What Is The Latter

For Latter-day Saints, mortal existence is seen in the context of a great sweep of history, from a pre-earth life where the spirits of all humankind lived with Heavenly Father to a future life in His presence where continued growth, learning and improving will take place. Life on earth is regarded as a temporary state in which men and women are tried and testedand where they gain experiences obtainable nowhere else. God knew humans would make mistakes, so He provided a Savior, Jesus Christ, who would take upon Himself the sins of the world. To members of the Church, physical death on earth is not an end but the beginning of the next step in Gods plan for His children.
