How To Make The Best Iced Chai Latte

How to Make an Iced Chai Tea Latte!

I like to cold-steep my tea for at least a few hours, though sometimes I leave it all day. The beauty of cold-steeping is that the tea stays mellow and smooth even if you forget about it for a while.

I think four bags of tea per quart of water makes a nice spicy cup of iced chai. I recommend starting there, but if you think you’d like your chai lighter or stronger, just adjust the number of tea bags as needed.

I sweeten my chai lattes with a quick honey syrup made of equal parts honey and water. A syrup like this mixes more easily into the tea than straight honey.

Emma Christensen

You could mix the syrup with the full batch of chai once it’s finished steeping, but I prefer to mix them in the glass. That way I can adjust the sweetness to my taste, or to the taste of any guests who happen to wander by in need of a cool, refreshing beverage.

Top off your glass of iced chai with as much or as little milk as you like. Creaminess is a highly personal decision. I like to use whole milk, but 2% milk, almond milk, or coconut milk are all lovely.

One final thought: If you like to sip your iced tea slowly and don’t want it to get watered down with ice cubes, make an extra batch of chai and freeze it into ice cubes!

How To Make An Iced Chai Latte At Home

  • Make chai concentrate: In a small pot or microwave-safe cup, bring ¼ cup of water to a boil. Add tea bags and steep tea for 5 minutes. Remove and discard tea bags. Stir in sugar until completely dissolved and add another ¼ cup of cold or room-temperature water .
  • Assemble your drink: Fill a 16-ounce cup with about 1½ cup of ice and add milk before pouring the chai mixture over the milk and stirring to combine. Top with optional whipped cream if desired, and enjoy!
  • Tips For Making An Iced Chai Latte

    • Steep the tea. To get the most flavor, be sure to steep the tea for 5-minutes.
    • Add syrup while hot. Add the vanilla syrup when the tea is hot. This will combine the tea and syrup flavors better than if its cool.
    • Let it cool before adding ice. Allow the tea to cool before you add the ice. If you dont, the ice will melt and make a watered down drink.

    Prep A Batch Of Concentrate

Tea concentrate is an awesome time saver. Simply whip up a batch over the weekend , and you have tea for days! The concentrate should keep in your fridge for about five days, so its a breeze to make enough to last the work week.

Making chai concentrate is very similar to the method described above, but in a larger quantity. Brew your tea as normal, following the ratio of one teaspoon of loose leaf chai for every four ounces of water. Once it has steeped, allow it to cool and store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to make your final beverage. Simple as that.

Now lets talk ratios: Remember, its one part tea leaves to four parts water. So if you want twenty ounces of concentrate to last you the week, use four teaspoons of loose leaf chai.

If youre hosting a party and want enough chai for, say, ten people, use forty ounces of water and ten teaspoons of loose leaf to make your concentrate. Yay, math!

Once you have your concentrate, the instructions to complete your iced chai couldnt be simpler: Just add water. Or, more accurately, just add whatever combination of water, milk, and ice will suit your tastes. For me, an equal portion of concentrate to milk is perfect. I leave out the extra water bit altogether. Others prefer one part concentrate to two parts milk. Play around with ratios until you find your perfect balance!

Starbucks Chai Concentrate Is Not The Same As Chai Concentrates Sold In Stores

How to Make Iced Chai Latte: Starbucks Recipe Included

Since Starbucks uses a highly concentrated chai, it has more flavor per ounce than the less-concentrated versions sold in stores.

For instance, look at the photo below. I did a side-by-side comparison of Tazo chai latte black tea concentrate to Starbucks. The differences are obvious.

    • The Starbucks concentrate is darker than Tazo.
    • It also has a stronger aroma than Tazo.
    • And the Starbucks sample has way more flavor.

Unless you make your own very strong concentrate, do not use the same proportions of concentrate to milk as the Starbucks recipe. The latte will come out too weak.

In case youre wondering, a grande iced chai latte is 25% concentrate and 75% milk, plus ice.

Clearly you need to use more Tazo concentrate , otherwise the milk drowns out the spicy goodness. In a nutshell, this is why itâs difficult to replicate a Starbucks iced chai latte at home using store ingredients. Think about it as you add more concentrate, the proportions of milk and chai change.

The Tazo box, says to use half concentrate and half milk to make a latte. Dont get me wrong, this will still make a very tasty drink, but its half water and half milk. The Tazo version just isnt as full and creamy as Starbucks.

Bring the water to a boil in a small pot, and once its boiling take it off the heat and add the tea bags. Steep the tea for 4 minutes before removing and discarding the tea bags. You can steep it for longer if you want a stronger tea flavor, so more like 7-9 minutes.

Add the sugar into the pot with the tea and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Pour the tea into a mug and allow the tea to cool for about 20 minutes.

Put ice in a glass and add in the milk. Pour the cooled chai tea over the milk and stir to combine.

Can I Make It Ahead Of Time

Im not a morning person, so I definitely understanding wanting to have a caffeinated beverage ready to go.

Iced Chai Lattes taste the best right after mixing the ingredients together.

BUT, you can make it ahead of time if you plan on drinking it later that day or the next morning.

To do so, do not add ice until right before drinking. The ice will melt in the refrigerator and water down the chai latte.

Store the latte in an airtight container in the fridge. I like to use mason jar glasses because theyre easy to shake, take off the lid, and drink.

I have also stored this latte in a container like this Rubbermaid one.

If you do make this Starbucks copycat chai tea latte ahead of time and store it in the fridge, I definitely recommend shaking or mixing it before drinking.

The concentrate tends to settle at the bottom of the glass while in the refrigerator. Ive made the mistake of just sticking a straw in and sipping. It packed a punch.

Even if you only drink freshly made chai lattes, the Tazo chai concentrate should be refrigerated after opening. Other brands and homemade concentrates should be too.

The Next Level: Spice It Up A Notch

Once you decide which method works best for you, youre ready to take your chai experience to the next level! Make your local barista sigh with envy at your chai-making expertise by using these pro tips.

Concoct a honey syrup: A dollop of honey can do wonders to balance the heady, complex spices quintessential to a classic chai. Honey will not, however, dissolve in iced chai. But you, culinary whiz that you are, can easily get around this by mixing your desired amount of honey with a bit of hot water. Just enough to liquify the honey, but not so much that it will water down your chai. Probably no more than a tablespoon or two of water will be necessary. Mix the syrup in with your chai, and reap the rewards of your gastronomic genius. Or just use some honey dust, a combo of dried honey granules and raw sugar which easily dissolves in cold liquid with just a bit of stirring.

Use FROZEN TEA for ice cubes: Thats right, you heard it here: Frozen tea. For ice cubes! Brilliant. Do not fear weak and watered down iced tea. Oh, no! How Much Caffeine Is In A Chai Latte

A Starbucks Iced Chai Tea Latte has 70, 95, and 145 mg of caffeine in a Tall, Grande, and Venti . Compare that to a Starbucks cold brew coffee with milk: it has 155, 205, and 310 mg of caffeine in a Tall, Grande, and Venti. To put that into perspective, a café latte with 2 shots of espresso has 150 mg of caffeine.

In other words, a Venti iced chai has basically the same amount of caffeine as a latte with 2 shots of espresso.

The amount of caffeine in home brewed tea can vary depending on the variety of tea and how long its steeped. But the caffeine level in my recipe should be around 60-70 mg.
