This tea surprisingly strong for a decaf. I like a strong tea. If you dont, you can probably use less to make it weaker. The leaves are in big pieces, not a powder like most tea. It doesnt filter through my strainer like a lot of loose teas do. It has a nice oolong flavor.

This organic decaffeinated oolong tea is semi-fermented and has a delicious flavor with a slightly roasted taste. It is decaffeinated using pressurized carbon dioxide which is considered one of the safest method and also most successfully preserves the flavor and antioxidants. One teaspoon was sufficient for brewing an 8 ounce cup and I let it steep for 5 minutes. To estimate shelf-life, the Best By date on the re-sealable pouch is two years in the future, but dates will vary. Excellent.

Organic Mothers Blend Organic Decaffeinated Loose Leaf Tea ...

I have to stop drinking caffeine sadly, so I was wondering if any of you had any recommendations for any decaf tea? It can be black, white, green, or anything! Thanks guys!! 🙂

Rooibos is naturally caffeine free. And delicious.

Thank you!!! 🙂 I actually have a few blends of Rooibos that Ill have to pull out!

Im still looking for a really good decaf, but to date Ive had the best luck with Darjeeling for black tea and sencha for green. Harneys Assam is also OK but I dont like it as well as the Darjeelings. This may just reflect my personal tastes.

Flavored teas can be OK but I find that the flavoring usually overpowers the tea. I havent found anything on-line that I like significantly better than the Bigelows that I bought in the supermarket .

Im afraid that you may be disappointed. The best decafs are about as good as average caffeinated teas. Im awaiting an order from Upton so may be able give you an update in a few days.

Actually, you can get Vanilla Comoro loose leaf by the pound from the website or by ounces from the Millerton store if you call and order! Harneys Decaffeinated is also excellent, the one that is a Ceylon. Also, A Southern Season sells a decaf Ceylon Orange Pekoe that is quite good. They also ship.

I just placed an order with Tea Haus and they have decaf versions of some of their black and green teas as well as a decent rooibos, fruit, and herbal tisanes, which are naturally caffeine free.

What Qualities Should I Look For In A Good Decaf Tea

When opting for a decaf tea, its important to know how it was made. Teas can be decaffeinated using different decaffeination processes. For a long time, decaf teas have been having a bad reputation of being not as healthy as non-decaffeinated tea, and even potentially dangerous. Thats because there are several decaffeination processes that include chemical solvents such as methylene chloride or ethyl acetate. But they can be decaffeinated using carbon dioxide or water too.

Furthermore, up until recently many tea drinkers didnt like the flavor of decaf teas, as it was different from the regular tea. However, technologies developed, allowing tea to be decaffeinated not only in a safe way, but by preserving most of the nutrients and natural flavor. This technique is called CO2 decaffeination. The fourth decaffeination method, the water extraction, is used much less for tea than it is for coffee, because although its very safe, it may wash out not only the caffeine, but flavor too. Methods using solvents may significantly impact the flavor in different ways.

Just like any other tea, high-quality decaf tea should have pretty leaves. Many of them will be broken, but they shouldnt look stale. Decaf tea should smell pleasant too, just like all non-decaf teas. The best decaf teas will be decaffeinated using the best possible available methods that preserve flavor and benefits. They should taste just like any other quality tea.

    Caffeine Free Vs Decaf Teas

You may ask, if there are naturally caffeine free teas, why would you choose a decaf tea instead? The answer is simple because of flavor and benefits. All decaf teas are made from Camellia sinensis tea plant. This plant has a unique chemical composition. White, yellow, green, oolong, black and dark teas are all made from Camellia sinensis plant, but undergo different growing, harvesting and processing methods which will ultimately change the chemical composition of tea leaf too.

Thats why some teas are richer in caffeine, some are richer in EGCg, a potent catechin that may provide numerous health benefits, and some may have high L-theanine content. For example, both EGCg and L-theanine are abundant only in Camellia sinensis. If you want to include EGCG into your diet, white and green tea will be the best teas to drink. They both contain caffeine, sometimes even more than black tea. But if you choose a naturally caffeine free tea such as rooibos, it wont contain any caffeine, but you wont be getting any EGCG either. Rooibos, however, has different antioxidants, that may provide a myriad of benefits too.

Thats why decaffeination is important. Decaf teas will still provide health benefits, but with a negligible amount of caffeine.

The Story Behind Decaf Earl Grey Tea

The history of Loose Leaf Decaffeinated Earl Grey Tea starts with its caffeinated counterpart. Legend has it that Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey, had travelled to China on a diplomatic mission when he saw a boy drowning in a river.

He or one of his men waded in to save the child. When the boys father heard about what happened, he gifted the Earl with Black Tea scented with bergamot oil – or so the tale goes.

The truth is that Lord Grey made no such trip to China, and, as a result, the story is wholly unfounded. How, exactly, it came into existence remains a mystery.

What we know with certainty is that a German scientist called Friedrich Ferdinand Runge was the man who first identified caffeine in the 1820s. The word caffeine, in fact, is the combination of the German kaffee and the French café.

There is a common misconception that Decaf Assam Loose Tea – and, indeed, any Tea that undergoes decaffeination – is void of antioxidants. While it is true to some degree, its essential to note that there are enough of these chemical compounds to promote your health and wellbeing.

Antioxidants combat free radicals in the body, thereby reducing the risk of developing numerous chronic conditions.

And thats just the beginning. One study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicates that Black Tea, regardless of the type, maintains the immune system.

A collaborative research project conducted in both the USA and Sweden, meanwhile, concluded that Tea protected your teeth. Perhaps better still, evidence of it having minor anti-cancer effects appears promising.

    Can I Really Decaffeinate Tea

Many people today are concerned about their caffeine intake. For some, caffeine makes them nervous, jittery, anxious, and unable to sleep. Instead of having to settle for the narrow choices of decaffeinated tea, you can actually decaffeinate tea yourself, without using any of the harmful chemicals that are sometimes used in the decaffeination process.

How much caffeine a certain tea contains will depend on such factors as whether it is black, green, or white tea where the tea leaves were harvested and the brewing temperature and method. Also, certain types of green tea have more caffeine than some black teas, which comes as a surprise to many. If you are sensitive to caffeine, it is wise to decaffeinate the tea that you drink.

When preparing to decaffeinate tea at home, you should make sure that you are using loose tea leaves, rather than prefilled tea bags. Most loose tea leaves can be used over several times without losing much flavor, while supermarket tea bags often lose their flavor quite quickly. You also do not want to steep the tea for too long while releasing the caffeine, or you will lose a lot of the flavor of the tea as well.

    How Is Tea Decaffeinated

A common misconception is that Decaffeinated Loose Tea is 100% void of the stimulant. No type of Decaf Tea nor decaffeination method is that efficient, though some processes come close. There are four primary ways to extract caffeine, two of which we use here at The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company. The other two dont meet our high standards. They are the following:

    Methylene Chloride Process

This is the most widespread means of decaffeination in the industry. It involves a chemical called Methylene Chloride used as a solvent to extract the caffeine molecules. The result is the removal of around 96-97% of caffeine. However, while efficient, we dont consider it especially safe and, therefore, steer clear of it.

    Ethyl Acetate Process

This is a chemical found naturally in several fruits. Some people suggest that it is better than Methylene Chloride when applied as a solvent. The trouble is that, while organic, it still, in rare instances, leads to health complications. We again avoid it despite its ability to remove 96-97% of caffeine content from Tea and Coffee.

    Carbon Dioxide Process

This is the safest and most efficient method. It functions by using pressurised liquid Co2 to extract the small caffeine molecules. Best of all is the fact that the larger flavour molecules stay almost entirely intact. The process removes 96-98% of the stimulant, which is the highest amount you can expect from decaffeination.

    Swiss Water Process

How To Brew Decaffeinated Green Tea

Green Tea – Loose is Best

Brewing Decaffeinated Green Tea can be a little more complicated. The temperature of the water, for starters, needs to be cooler otherwise, you risk burning the leaves. How long you allow it to steep, too, will play a considerable role. Any longer than two or three minutes, and it might taste bitter. But providing you adhere to these rules, youre in for a treat. Here is your step-by-step guide:

1, Put the Green Tea into a Tea Infuser or Filter.

2, Place the accessory in a mug or cup.

3, Boil fresh water and allow it to cool to temperatures between 80 and 90°C.

    4, Infuse for 1 to 3 minutes.

How to Serve: Consider honey or lemon. The other option is to serve without accompaniments.
