It is so easy to make homemade iced tea I can’t believe that I don’t do it more often.

Now that summer is here, a refreshing glass of iced tea really hits the spot. But buying ready made iced tea to drink at home can get expensive. And why use more disposable bottles and containers than you need to?

A box of your favorite tea bags is very economical, and with a little planning you can always have freshly brewed iced tea on hand for your family.

Here’s a little hint you can certainly serve your homemade iced tea in your favorite pitcher, but I like to pour and store single servings into mason jars.

I just fill them three quarters of the way up , add a slice of lemon, close them with a lid, and put them in the fridge.

When someone is thirsty, they open the jar, add some ice and they are good to go.

Whats The History Of Sweet Tea

First, a little history on sweet tea. In 1795, the first tea plantations in the United States arrived in South Carolina. Today, there are still a few left in the state. The first sweet tea recipe has been traced back to the cookbook Housekeeping in Old Virginia, by Marion Cabell Tyree, and was published in 1879. It called for green tea, which was more commonly drunk as iced tea at the time, until World War II when green tea importation was cut off and Americans switched to black tea imported from India.

Sweet tea is so ingrained in Southern culture that in 2003, as part of an April Fools joke, the Georgia Legislature introduced a bill that would make it a misdemeanor for restaurants not to offer sweet tea. In the movie Steel Magnolias, Dolly Parton proclaimed that sweet tea was the house wine of the South. One of my favorite simple pleasures is to sit on the back porch on a velvety Georgia night, sipping sweet tea, and eating a plate of fried green tomatoes while watching fireflies.

Tea comes in two basic varieties: black and greengreen has a more delicate flavor. Actually, all tea starts out green; black tea is simply green tea thats gone through various stages of processing and fermentation, explains author and former Gramercy Tavern managing partner Nick Mautone. For iced tea, use approximately 1 tablespoon of tea per 5 to 6 ounces of hot water and let it steep for up to 10 minutes. Drinking it cold reduces the tannin pucker, and ice will dilute it.

The Best Tea For Floral Fruity Iced Tea: Bigelow Earl Grey

How To Make Delicious Instant Pot Iced Tea

Earl Grey teas are infused with bergamot oil, which adds a floral, citrusy flavor to the black tea base. When I posted a video on stories about testing teas, my friend replied that she already knew it was going to be the best oneshe wasnt wrong. Though bergamot is technically a citrus flavor, I found this tea to have a lovely mild vanilla note when I drank it in iced form. It was comparatively light in color and it had a remarkable smoothness and much less bitter taste than many of its competitors, making it extra refreshing.

The smoothness of this tea really won me over. I dont drink coffee mainly because of this disparity between smell pre-brewing and after. I’ve always loved the smell of the beans and hated the smell of the liquid and never understood precisely why they’re so different.

I say all of this because the first thing I noticed when I put this cup of iced tea to my mouth was how nice it smelled, and how that nice smell directly translated to the taste. Of all the teas I tried, this ones smell and taste felt the most similarI loved its somewhat earthy with woody undertones.
