Strong Herbal Teas Are Much More Forgiving

Most herbal teas do not contain near as many bitter compounds as tea does. If you want to make an extremely strong brew and are not dead-set on Camellia Sinensis , you could make a strong herbal tea.

Herbal tea generally does not contain caffeine. With some herbal teas produced in the same factories as regular tea, minimal amounts of caffeine may get into the herbal tea, though.

If you are looking for a strong dose of caffeine, herbal tea is not the right choice for you. But for a strong taste, herbal teas do have the advantage of being much more forgiving than any tea could ever be. This all comes down to taste preference and what you are looking for, really.

How To Make Sun Tea

To make homemade sun tea, simply fill a large glass dispenser with water, and add 8 tea bags per gallon, based on the size of your container.

I poured 1 ½ gallons of water into my dispenser, so I added 12 teabags.

The kind of tea you use is entirely up to you. Traditional Southern iced tea is usually made with some sort of black tea blend, like Lipton or Luzianne. But feel free to explore and be creative here. If theres anything Ive learned about tea-making from my mother, its that the best iced teas often come from a random blend of whatever kind of tea bags you have lurking in your pantry.

For instance, green tea, hibiscus tea, and peach tea blend together to make a marvelous fruity iced tea with a rich red color.

Once the tea bags are in the water, cover the dispenser and set it out in the sun. The amount of time it will take for the tea to steep in the sun is based on several factors:

How hot is it outside?

What kind of tea are you using?

How large is your jug of tea?

How dark do you like your tea?

A general timeframe is between 2-3 hours of sunshine. Ive been known to bring mine in after just one hour on a really hot day.

Once the sun tea is the color and flavor youre going for, sweeten the tea if you so desire.

Instead of stirring in sugar and watching the granules settle at the bottom of the jug, I like to sweeten sun tea with honey or agave. It stirs in nice and smooth.

Strong Tea By Reduction

This method does require a whole lot of effort compared to anything else you might have tried. If you remove some water from the finished tea, the tea will naturally be stronger. For this to work, you need to place the tea on low heat for quite some time.

I have tested this in a frying pan on low heat and the tea was much stronger at first and then slowly turned into sirup before it got solid. This remaining is sometimes sold as instant tea in China and can be redissolved in water!

How To Make Loose

If you choose to steep loose-leaf tea, you’ll need a tea infuser. These may come inside your teapot , or you can buy a single-serving tea infuser to pop inside a single cup.

  • Fill the infuser with the amount of tea specified on the package for how many servings you need.
  • Bring fresh, cold water to a rolling boil.
  • Once boiling, pour over the tea infuser and steep according to the timing above based on your tea variety.
  • Remove the tea infuser from the cup or pot.
  • If desired, finish with milk, your preferred sweetener, or a slice of citrus.

    I use my glass teapots for every type of tea, but if you only brew certain types, it might make sense to get a different type of pot. Japanese cast-iron pots are great for Japanese green teas like sencha or gyokuro.

    Chinese clay teapots are perfect for Chinese oolong or black teas. These clay pots take on the flavor of the tea, so you want to stick to using one for only one type of tea.
